I can see what you're saying. There's definitely an indentation in the tongue for each of the eyelets, but after 4 years of pretty consistent wear, I don't think they're anywhere close to eating through. Might be an issue in the next few years though
Blemishes in full grain leathers are to be expected. Natural imperfections in the full grain leather is not sufficient grounds to deem a pair of footwear as inferior, and a candidate to become a factory second. I have bought 4 pairs of seconds, and have not really found anything about them that jumps out at me as a serious flaw. Just about the only thing that could be wrong with any of them might be slightly misaligned panels when pieces were stitched together. However, I did have one pair of 875s that I had to send back. It looked someone had an accident during the sole sanding and finishing process and accidentally hit the upper, which removed almost an inch of triple stitching on the side of the vamp.
This is great info - thanks for sharing! For my part, I haven't seen anything glaringly wrong with the seconds I purchased here and would definitely buy again if I found another deal like this.
I just bought my first pair of Red WIngs and are Factory seconds. I agree that a blemish like that could not turn me down from buying. Because this will be my first pair of RW if I like them I'll probably buy other pairs. I got the Iron Rangers and I understood that my pair is a second because of the way the shade of leather turned out. But I think that also makes them unique. I paid $199.00 USD for tham.
Right there with you! I honestly think factory seconds are a fantastic deal and it's cool that Redwing puts them out there rather than letting the boots go to waste - keep rocking those IR's and they'll last forever!
@@FashionTheFurious I just got them yesterday and I can't believe how good of a deal they were. Mine also had a small punch hole on the tongue...that no one will see. Very happy with how they turned down.
FashionTheFurious I’ve learned that getting boots on Sale doesn’t guarantee you’ll get a boot free of defects. Believe me. In a 2 month period I’ve returned 5 pair of boots from different manufacturers. Thursday boots, Frye Company, Allen Edmonds and now Red Wings which I’ve ordered online. If buying online stay clear especially of Allen Edmonds. Even buying directly from AE you’ll still get a defective shoe. I gave up on them after the 3 attempts. I think paying full price is how you’ll get a perfectly made shoe or inspecting the shoe at the store. I believe these companies are selling their defective shoes as sale items.
@southside312 I bought online from Nordstrom Rack. Because they have a good return policy and I live close to a store, I was able to self-size and return the ones I didn't need
@@santoshernandez9231 I picked up these from Nordstrom Rack - if you get in during their "Clear the Rack" sale then you can usually pick some up for cheap if they're in stock! Not sure where else you can find seconds...
That's good to know! How do you tell the difference between welts? Is there indicators in the stitching or do you have to rely on what the manufacturer puts out?
Good point! I found the insert to be most helpful in getting the classic moc toes to fit. I think that was because the size 10 fit my foot length, but the moc toe was a little boxier than other styles, so the insert helped to account for that.
If you rub some neutral shoe polish on them on the mud brown Moc Toe boots they will look really good. You won't be disappointed if you said you work in a office. I rub wax on my Moc Toe boots and it gave them a nice sheen to them.
Thanks for the tip! I’ve been using Smith’s Leather Balm on mine and like the darkening effect, I also just threw some speed hooks on the Moc Toes as well
I’m a big fan of factory seconds. I was told that they are superficial defects in the leather of the boot. So that variation could very well have “qualified” it for a factory second.
Thanks for the feedback! After wearing these pairs for a while, I 100% agree with you. The boots are great and I honestly have no complaints with the look so far.
Honestly, they're one of my favorite boots in my rotation. I think I'm going to do a follow up video, but I currently have RW Moc Toes and Blacksmiths, a couple pairs of Thursday Boots, and a pair of Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill Boots and I these ones and the AE's are my top two.
@@FashionTheFurious awesome. I own quite a few boots. Redwings, Higgins mill and parkhurst are my top 3 boots for comfort. There's a guy on etsy that sells copper rough and tough belt if you're interested to match your boots.

They should not be punching the tongue like that. A hole is a hole. This is why I don't buy Factory 2nd's Copper rough and tough are awesome. Congrats.
Haha, there is going to be a hole there after the eylette backs eat through the tongue.
-figured they would have solved that problem.

Good tip fitting an insole. I'm a size 10.5 but considering going down to a size 10.
Hope it helps! I've found that I end up sizing down quite a bit in many brands include Allen Edmonds, Thursday, and Viberg

Factory second sounds great, where do I find red wing factory second?
I grabbed these ones at Nordstrom Rack - I'm sure there's a few other spots out there though!

You’re smart for buying factory 2nds. I however am a fool who am OCD about factory 2nds.
Haha I get that, glad I picked these up for a good price, but I'll probably get future RW's direct from them unless I find an awesome deal again

It was indeed!
calicuts909 not for his feet
James H haha ain’t that the truth! Only ended up going with two of them, but the break-in was real, especially on the blacksmiths.
Actually that's a norvegian welt or storm welt on those 1907...it's better than a goodyear welt...more water resistant and long lasting

Calon Lochridge the goodyear welt has a single row of stiching...the norvegian welt has 2 or 3 rows and an extra lip of learher

They do it that way because they know it doesnt hurt anything
