    @Rose-ec6he 5 месяцев назад

    It's nice to hear a unique perspective on this. I can't say I agree with this exact take but I do personally find that supporting upgrades is an undervalued consideration when buying a PC. Most people tend to buy a PC and replace the entire thing after giving it 0 maintenance for a few years and this is very wasteful. Computers can easily last decades if taken care of well and occasionally fixed up and yet so often a couple years seems to be all people aim for, it's disappointing to see such a short path to landfill for little reason. Sure, I don't expect people to hold onto computers for decades but leaving room for increasing ram and swapping out the CPU can add years of comfortable usability. It's cheaper in the long run as well as less wasteful

This happened with the jump from amd 2000 to 3000 cpu's. 3000 series had pcie4.0 where as 2000 series had 3.0. You could update the bios to support 3000 series on your current motherboard but you didn't get pcie4.0 support.

    Personally I've never bothered with this idea. It seemed cool back during the Super Socket 7 era. But then it turned out to be by and large pointless.
    Not to mention that I've seen quite a few AM4 motherboards with 300 and 400 series chipsets on them, that never got the BIOS updates for Zen 3 or even Zen 2.
    At which point you're still stuck with a motherboard you need to replace.
    Also in my experience it never mattered anyway. My Applebred Duron (S462) didn't fit in the SuperSocket7 board my K6-3 was in. My Palermo Sempron used S754. My Q6600 used S775, 3570K was on S1155 and my current 11400 is on S1200.
    Some times the RAM would carry over, most of the time the GPU would carry over. But I never bother with hoping my motherboard will outlast my CPU. Unless you expect to upgrade every 3 years or so, it's an irrelevant consideration.
    Even now if I want more CPU than my 11400, an 11900K costs less than 250 euro. Which is a pretty damn good CPU at that price.
    For me the primary requirement of a motherboard is that it offers the features and aesthetics I want for the foreseeable future. Not what my hopes and dreams are for say 10 years from now.
    Just buy a CPU that runs circles around current gen consoles and a GPU to match and you're basically set for most mainstream games until a few years into the next console generation.

    We don't like it when our beloved am4 being called "dead", we prefer "discontinued"

    This aged like fine wine. Am5+ isnt going to be far away and the rumors go that am5 won't support 9000 series

    He's no wrong but if you're already planning on going used market then am4 is your best friend. Still the best value you'll ever get rn and still have headroom to go up to 16 cores. Just don't get anything lower than b550 or x570 by now because of pcie gen 4 and higher quality boards than the old b350 b450 and the respective X series boards

    I went with AM5 for my latest PC. Up from the 5800X to the 7800X3d, however given the 5800X is still a powerhouse, I used the old AM4 stuff for another system that I gave to my brother.

    I just built a new rig with all "5" support (AM5, DDR5, PCIe 5). My buddies were rolling their eyes and scoffing about my ridiculousness over future-proofing, but this is exactly why I paid more money now, so I can easily upgrade later. 🧠

    Short story is when he says dead e means it will no longer recieve any updates.
    Not that it is now obsolete

    Its Not dead - its in retirement. To make a Sports metaphor: A senior athlete that is fit can beat you in their category of choice. But it will most likely not outcompete younger athletes under normal conditions.

    I get it that this is an valid tip dor people that work with PCs in a professional environment where you can get benefits from such an upgrade.
    But i am firmly believing that you will be better off to just buy a very highend system and then upgrade when the features that cant be supported on your current platform got released.
    I upgrade my cpu and mainboard (most likely RAM too) every 4-6 years.
    Going from PCIe 4 -> 5
    DDR4 -> DDR5
    NVME 3 -> 4 (one 5.0 slot is available too)
    If you are really on a budget all the time then i get it. But its like the old story a bit where the one without money has to buy work shoes every year while the richer one can buy more expensive ones that last much longer.
    In the end you can pay more by upgrading frequently instead of waiting 1-2 months to save up a bit more.
