This movie I can never forget. I cried like a baby. What a classic. The script and acting by the father and son character are absolutely lovely💕😍. I am speechless over this great epic. God bless🙏

Gets me every time this movie, even as a kid. Have not seen my son in 6 years through no fault of my own. So it gets me that bit more. I may not be an angel but cant help thinking of him every day. Love you my beautiful boy Kieran xxxxx

1979...seems like a hundred lifetimes ago to me now. Seems ancient. Hadn't thought about this movie until recently when I read something on Voight. But I remember seeing this in either '79 or '80 on HBO(and this was when HBO was THE thing to have and there were no other options for any type of movie channel). Here it is 2015 and I'm watching a sliver of something that I watched at a young child.

What point in time is this movie supposed to be taking place? The original The Chanp with Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper apparently took place in the 1930s , not merely the filming but the very plot itself. So the plot was taking place in what was then modern times.
This version was made in the late 1970s but there are scenes in the movie in which there are photographers with those very old fashioned cameras with large flash bulbs and actually in the late 1970s there were much more sophisticated cameras than that.
So this newer version of The Champ seems to depict a time before the 1970s, and yet it seems that some of the clothing that the people wear are more like what people wore in the 1970s. Anyone know the answer?

I hated this movie. The guy is a bum and he has his son totally cowed.
As far as the movie, most movie critics said that it had bad acting and the plot too mellow dramatic and overplayed cheap sentimentality at the expense of a good story line .
