Use Earbuds to Make a Directional Microphone - Mini Spy Mic

  • Using earbuds to make a microphone = nice hack. Earbuds to make a directional microphone = great DIY project. Using everyday items you have around your home you can make an effective microphone that isolates the sound it picks up using your earbuds. Even better, when you are done you can still use the earbuds for listening to music. In this video I will show you the basic hack, the Dialed In enhancement and ultimately the cool "spy-like" alterations that we will make in the future. At the end of the video I show the directional microphone in action and explain the basic premise behind why and how this works. This premise will be used in a future build when we Dial it in to make a parabolic microphone using household items.
    To make this project you will need the following items:
    - Earbuds (to use for a microphone)
    - Headphones or 2nd set of earbuds for monitoring the result
    - 2 liter bottle, plastic cup or other similar item
    - Metal clothes hanger
    - Recording device (audio recorder, computer, etc)
    - Tape

      I appreciate the feedback. Just to clarify do you mean to use the set up to transmit as apposed to receive? I am assuming that is what you mean.

      Yes.... because i already have a sensitive mic and.the whole set up...

    I have a guitar tuner that has a mic and headphone jack would this work its the only thing I own with those two hook ups great vid btw

    Strange that it works? But it really works!!! But I need something similar that allows me to get at least 20\30 times amplified a set of voices and words through a wall. Instead of using a headset, it is better to use a high-gain microphone capsule. Now I plan to build a dish but I want to use a spy fm module and amplify the audio signal using empty, perforated capsules (from coffee) to make it a directional mic. Then I use a metal coffee canister as the dish so that I can get a more accurate and reliable audio wavelength. I look forward to comments and suggestions for getting and recording through a wall.     My recorder like yours...both mic and headphone jacks work, but not at the same time..I can't listen as I record..?

    i bet you could make a "sound kinect" with 1 of these per pixel. (it would be a depth map.)

      Just a little speculation - but i think it would take a bit of precision either of the amplitude or the time difference when u read it in, and it would take a circuit - so its a bit advanced... but i guess localizing the vector is the starting of it - sorta how your eye works, but with sound. :)

    instead of a recording device like you have can i just use an old iphone ? would that work

      absolutely! Depending upon the connection you use for the microphone you may not have an option to listen at the same time you are recording (but there might be an app to fix that). Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    Pointing it away from the sound and then pointing towards the sound while bringing it WAYYYYY closer at the same time was a poor example of an otherwise very good idea for a directional mic.

      That sounds like a really cool application for microphones. I've never made one. Do you have any resources you recommend that explain how to build a soundfield array that will work for making something that provides localization accuracy?

      ​@@DialedInDIY , Well, the most important thing in the design is to measure everything very accurately. You know the saying: "Measure twice & cut once" How you design it is up to you but I've looked into several methods. Geometry is also a big factor in the function & accuracy of the system. Some are cubular and other are circular. Think of it as an Acoustic Antenna. Sound Waves can be Beam Formed just like RADAR. A good place to start is the Fishing sites that talk about Sonar for Anglers;^D. Also pvv dot org has an interesting page on his trial & error of his gadget. And interestingelectronics is another site worth checking out. Really it is about Tinkering with the stuff. The Robotics Community is another great resource as they use sensors often in their projects. But the key to the whole thing is understanding the Mathematics Calculations. Hope ya got good grades in Math Class because you're gonna need it, LoL;^D. The closer the Mics are to each other the harder it gets. Bot the whole system can be explained simply with the ears as an example: You have 2 ears on your Skull, one aimed to the East & the other aimed to the West. You can determine the Direction of a Sound Source because sound wave from the source strike your ears at different Times at a Certain Rate of Speed depending on the ATMOSpheric conditions & your Brains Rapidly Form a Picture of the Source(a Bird or Dog) & the Direction of Critter. Now your Brains do the Calcs without you really having to sit down with a Math Book to crunch the Numbers but a Machine is NOT the same as Me And you. All ya gotta do is Crunch the Numbers and Program the Machine;^D.
      Sonic Science is actually cutting edge Tech right now and a lot of people, for good reason, do not want it in the wrong hands.
      Another great place to start in understanding this Field of Sound is George Lucas(THX) & the people at DTS Surround Sound for Movies. Andrew Jones of Pioneer The Chief Transducer Engineer is another good person to check out to see what he has done & why.

      Keep in Mind Sound can be Reflected or Absorbed by Matter.
      A sound Field Microphone is the Reverse of a Cinematic Surround Sound System. Instead of using Speakers as in Surround Sound, a Sound Field Mic uses Many Microphones but all ya need is 2 but even a ONE Ear Man Han Determine Direction of the Sound Source because of the Geometry of the Outer Ear causing Different Distortions in the Sound Waves striking the Ear at Different Angles and the Brains do all the "Dirty Work" to Calc the Directions of the Source Sounds without ya even having to Bust out a Pencil an Crunch the Numbers;^D.
      So Technically a Sound Field Mic at a minimum is only One Directional Microphone with an Geometrically ODD SHAPED Shroud around it and of course all the code and programing to process the data.
      To set up a 11.2 Atmos Surround Sound for A Home Entertainment Sound Field and tune all the speakers all I use is a Simple Stereo Mic(2mics in one) and the program that came with My AVR Chirps out some Sonar Pings from each Transducer & Spits out the Exact Distance from the Mic to each of the Speakers & displays it for Me on the Screen.
      Certain HDMI PC Sound Cards & Drivers[Like the One I Have((wink wink))] will do the Exact same thing....or do I mean Ping, it's hard to tell what's goin' on in My Brainz;^D. It Squirts out Sonar Pings and then Displays the Exact Distance to Each of My Speakers. It's pretty Neat;^D.
      MatLab & Octave & a Few other Programing GUI's have some open source code available on Localization, DOA & TDOA but again the key is understanding the mathematical algorithm why both a One Ear & 2 Ear Person or Anny Animal with Ears can Determine the Direction of a Source Sound & wither or NOT that Sound Source is Moving or Stationary(Dynamics & Statics). And why you do not need to take a Statics & Dynamics Class in College to be able to know where a sound source is coming from;^D. He that hath an ear let him hear!

      Oh, Psi, Remember the Speed of Light & Sound VARIES depending on the Conditions of the Medium it is Traveling through for example: Superman is FASTER THAT A SPEEDING BULLET, hahahaha, that's not that fast considering most Ammo is Subsonic, meaning most do not break the sound barrier, LoL!!! The Speed of Sound at about std. room temperature(about 68-70F, 20celcius) with Zero Humidity, humidity is important, is About 767mph, yes Miles per hour, or 343 Meters per Second. These are also interesting Numerical Palindromes(same Forward & Backward). BUT the Speed of Sound Travels through Solid Matter Easier that Gas or Liquid. So, Sound Travels FASTER through Stone than Air
      Sound Waves in Air = 343m/s or 767mph
      Sound Waves in Diamond = 12000, yeas that's 12 Thousand meters per Second, yeah that's 26,843 miles per hour, quite the difference Bud, LoL
      Sound Waves in Water is about 1,493m/s or 3,340mph depending on Conditions. A simplified Formula for Figuring the Velocity of Sound WAVES(Not Sound Particles, that's a whole other Ball game Bud) is:
      Velocity = sq. root of Elasticity of Matter/Density of Matter
      Solid = Fast
      Liquid = Medium
      Gas = Slow

      ​@@DialedInDIY , My Pleasure but remember that sound has been used as a Weapon before and is used everyday by both good guys and bad in the various world military organizations to hunt the enemy and attack 'em with beamformers. The Motto of the USS Grouper SS214 is "Hunt them, kill 'em" & until you've been attacked with Sound it is hard to understand because it is not as fun as ya might think but that same tech can be used to PROVE a Person or Vessel was in fact Stritegically Attacked With one or more Sonic Weapons with the intent to do that Certain Person/Vessel Great Bodily Harm which is in fact a Declaration of war.
      This Same Methode of Detecting a Sonic Attack can also be Deployed to Locate the epicenter of an Earthquake, which is ELF Sound Waves Traveling through the Earth with such Force as to Shake the Earth & even Rattle Building Structures apart. Think about that for a couple seconds;^D.

      It actually does... I have found that some headphones/earbuds work much better than others but all will work as a mic when plugged into a mic jack. So then, the better (bigger, etc.) the "dish" you can make the better the pick up will be.
