  • A Roberts Revival R250 with blown audio. Probably caused by polarity reversal (incorrect mains power supply - plug). Roberts Revival radios have the centre pin of the mains lead 'Negative'. Here's how I fix them.

cool foxy like the DE soldering tool will have to get one ! for the workshop nice and easy repair I take it that the capacitors and the audio chip take the brunt of the polarity reversal and the rest of the radio survives

Hi Benji, yes, the audio chip takes the brunt - often one or both of the caps go high as well, I've even seen exploded caps in the R250 (Gawd knows what voltage someone put up those radios to make the caps go bang!). Usually changing the audio IC, is enough to bring the radio back to life.

Your desoldering tool looks pretty good - could you provide details of it please?

Hi Simon - thanks for watching - the desoldering tool is a Duratool - linked here: cpc.farnell.com/duratool/d00672/desoldering-station-uk-eu-plug/dp/SD01384

Hi, thanks for the video I have changed the 1000uf 16.v and the 470uf 10.v caps. and still having problems so I suspect it is the
audio chip after seeing your video.
The audio chip has 2 numbers on the top 0145/201x01, I have tried to find the chip on the internet but no luck. can you help.

Hi John, and thanks for watching. The IC you need is the S1A2201X01 - 1.2W Audio Power Amp DIP8 - they are available on the internet. I bought my last ones on eBay (From China). They aren't so common, so are a little more pricey...

Hi, Thanks for your video. I've got the same issue with my R250 revival and the capacitor is definitely popped up. Could you please send a link for the chip?

    • @Codeeze

Change the caps first. Theres 2 usual suspects, a 1000uf and a 470uf. You may be lucky and not have to change the audio chip. If you still need a chip, send me an email - address is on my 'about' page. You need to check the chip number on the top of it - there are two variants depending on your actual R250 model. I may be kind enough to send you one... ;)
