On British singers sounding American, it's largely because American sounds slightly more nasal, whereas British English sounds slightly more dull. The American accent cuts through higher mids more than British English which is slightly lower and softer, which kinda gets lost in the mix. So basically it's stylistically adopted, but also has a practical implication in terms of cutting through more.

"bawo ni" is Yoruba for "how are you" the other Nigerian tribes use it as well and "como tu ta" is a colloquial way for Dominicanos or Boricuas to say "how are you".
