My granddad was what some would call an English gardener. During the war they would use every possible available space to grow food during the War. He passed all his knowledge down to me and I've growing a "Victory" garden for many yrs. In fact months ago I tripled the size of my garden months before all this craziness started. I'll grow more than we could ever eat but we'll be happy to share with our neighbors ..........

I love the idea of bringing back the Victory Gardens . My grandmother told me of Victory Gardens during the depression era and after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I do wish people could and would come together in good times as they do in bad times and I think a Victory Garden is just the ticket.

The good times are over.
My garden is tiny but I still managed to get in a walk in greenhouse. I have radishes, rocket, American Land cress, parsley, basil, spring onions and celery in it. Outside I have rosemary, sage, chives, oregano, lemon thyme and lavender. In the kitchen I grow curly cress.
I so agree. Im in my 60's and my parents always gardened and canned food etc. They lived thru the Depression and raised my 5 older siblings on very little $. They always drilled it into us to be prepared and rely on ourselves. I dont have land anymore, but going to at least plant veggies in containers on my deck. Thanks for your tips. Stay well and safe.
My grandparents were much the same as your parents. They likely never heard of "prepping" or "survivalism," but they practiced it.

Hi Gardener Scott. I have had a small garden for several years, containers & a couple of flowerbeds. A few weeks ago I felt a strong prompting to do more. I began expanding my garden to include several beds to build a Victory Garden. I think that many of us are thinking alike. Working hard in the garden has been a great stress reliever and good exercise. I have decided to grow more of the things I usually buy in the store. Luckily I have a number of seed packets & saved seeds.
I had an epiphany with some potatoes a few weeks ago. On a whim, I planted some sprouted potatoes at Christmas time and now the plants were ready to harvest. I got 15 lbs of red potatoes. They were wonderful and not much work. So, I planted more.
I don't know what the future brings, but I can grow some things to help keep our family fed.

I used to watch the Victory Garden show on PBS when I was a little kid. I already had my seeds ordered and garden planned before the pandemic, but now I'm going to grow more than my son and I need to share with neighbors and friends along with the eggs from my hens that I've already been sharing. I have a suburban yard now but the hens and garden give me the feeling of acreage again and it's lovely to be able to share.
I remember watching that show too. I'm sure it helped many of us get interested in gardening.
Yes! Gardening is my stress relief for my PTSD. I have seen a big jump in the gardening groups I am in, so people are definitely starting to grow their own. Most of my neighbors now have gardens in their backyard too. I really enjoy gardening, even though I am not that good at it, yet! Lol. Thank you for your videos again they are great!

My mother was 10 years old in 1939,she lived in Liverpool UK. Britain was under direct threat of invasion. Rationing was strict. But vegetables where readily available. Dig For Victory was one of the slogans of the time. Many people including my mum and her family grew their own basic food in their back gardens. I live in the Sierra Nevada in Andalusia. I have olive trees, almonds, walnuts etc. Unfortunately seeds are not available at the local store right now.
It’s nice that you did this episode at this time. In Canada we had them and in the U.K. when I chat with my friends in the U.K. we always talk about the garden allotment system they have ...a leftover blessing from a terrible time. I heartily agree. Bring back the victory garden!!! In this day, I think it’s even more important to grow a garden for our own mental wellness and to just have a place to think about one thing that ISN’T called covid. Grow a victory garden and share some seeds you have to spare with a neighbour or even share some of your spare seedlings. People will really feel happy that their neighbour thought of them! This spring I’m growing more seedlings than usual so I can share with some of my neighbours because frankly I have more seeds than I need and maybe some people in the neighborhood might just like to grow a tomato with their really bored kids this spring! 😃
My grandparents went from the UK to Canada and eventually ended up here in the US. My grand dad shared many stories with me

Frankly speaking, if more people got involved with some degree of gardening, there’d be less strife in this world. It’s really that cathartic. It’s both a useful skill and a personal sense of achievement both practically and aesthetically.

Funny sitting here watching your video eating a salad made up mostly from my garden (Mizuna, Arugula, chicory, tomatoes). Thinking back to my first exposure to gardening as well as a "victory garden" was in the middle 70's when President Ford called for them (as well as other actions) to help defeat inflation (WIN). Today I enjoy growing my own food even in small areas and different containers. While a lot of America is starting their gardens, some of my "crops" will be ending soon due to the heat and humidity of Southwest Florida.

More than a war against a virus I believe we are in the greatest spiritual battle of all time. When you get your hands in the dirt and you see the new life sprouting from the soil, it reminds me of the promise of everlasting life from God. So although the dark entities may seem strong, spending time in our gardens reminds us that it is light and life that prevails, always. There's no fear in the garden. It's my happy place and where I reconnect to Spirit.
Fantastic thoughts, thank you. Those of us with some experience must use this challenging time as an opportunity to welcome new gardeners and help a whole new generation understand the importance of growing a bit of food whenever possible.
I'd like to point out that young people today are ripe (pun intended) to embrace a new Victory Garden movement - they already appreciate heirloom and organic food, many like to support independent growers, CSAs and farmers' markets, they have a heightened awareness of environmental issues, etc. Look how many sellers as well as buyers at many farmers' markets are only in their 20s and 30s; that's excellent!
I agree. I hope the youth of today grow more of their food.

I’m glad you brought up this topic. I’ve been thinking victory garden for weeks now. I’m not a you tube producer, but I’ve considered doing a Victory garden video for friends and family here in South Louisiana. People who have never set foot in a garden center are now asking me questions about gardening and seeds and plants are flying off the shelves right now! I think there’s a great opportunity to educate and encourage people to take a little control over their own food security.

Starting in the late 70s there was a show on pbs in Boston where i live called The Victory Garden , it was a great and informative show ,i loved watching it with my father it was on until the 90s but the last few years it wasnt very good , IT was hosted by Bob Crockett, Jim Thompson , then Roger Swain . Your videos are very good Scott , keep up the inspuration and good work, thank you .

This video is fantastic. I started my channel for the same reason you are talking about, this pandemic made me think of the victory gardens.I'm not old enough to remember them but my mom does. My videos are not as well done but I'm having fun and distracting myself while at home. As someone who is disabled it's hard for me to do all the tilling and work with the soil every year, so I ended up over the years doing more container gardening, using small 3 and 5 gallon pails and I do really well growing potatoes, green beans, etc. Sadly, some states, like Michigan and Vermont now have declared seeds and garden center as non-essential so you can't buy them there. I have already gotten what I needed for this year even though it's a month from growing season. I'm trying green beans in smaller containers early on to get a jump on the season and putting the plants outdoors when it's above freezing and taking them in at night. Everyone should know how to grow their own foods and also to keep some heirloom seeds so that they're not relying on those stores.

Plant early and plant often . If you have a bumper crop of something you can almost always trade it to a local gardener that has something you dont . I trade out alot of things i grow for things that either failed or that i didnt plant . To me a garden is like money in the bank . Its an hour to my grocery store and 5 minutes to my garden .

Thank you so much! This video is very inspirational! I have a small backyard, mostly shaded and a dear problem. Deers come for many hostas inherited from previous owner. Fence is out of question, unless there is a cheap way to do so. The backyard is hilly and water drainage is poor. Again, drainage needs money. I have a patio, that is sunny enough and small place in front of the house with sun but it comes with the deer problem. I think I can use patio for container growing. Overwhelmed, but trying to read and watch videos to educate myself. My question is - what Can I grow that is shade tolerant/not necessarily deer resistant, shade tolerant/ deer resistant and moderately sunny but deer resistant? I want to use as much space as it is possible.
Thanks! Many cool season plants like spinach, lettuce, beets, carrots, and kale are shade tolerant, but if it's tasty to us it will probably be tasty for deer too. Many herbs can be shade tolerant too. For most vegetable plants it's best to put some type of barrier (plastic, wire, netting) around them to keep deer from eating.

I normally grow on my allotment here in the UK but unfortunately due to travel restrictions it’s not quite possible to be there working so I’m trying to turn as much space in my front and back gardens to food production. I’ve even built a planter over my trash cans at the side of the house

Great Video Scott! Would love to be out. However........I still have 3 feet of snow covering my yard and I live in the lower 48! Will start germination for slow growers in a couple weeks though. Will be making some cold frames too to stave off the boredom.

I grew up with one, yet I have really no idea where to start. From where to get supplies to when to plant. I need hand holding!
Buy starts from the garden centers you start small you can start in containers and expand from there
Victory Begins in the Garden totally agree! Start small with some buckets or just one small raised bed. My first garden was a plastic raised planter from Costco and once I grew beans and a tomato in that successfully , I was hooked!
Starting small is the right way to do it. Just a few plants while you figure it out. Go to a local nursery or master gardener program and they can help you with your local considerations.

As many have said: go to a garden center and ask. They love to talk with you because they like to sell their products. Perhaps most imprtantly is to, at least in the beginning, only grow what you normally eat. Don't waste time on exotics. Cheers
What a great idea that could be implemented, we just need to get people inspired. If we could get people motivated, do we have the seed volume available that would be required to make it happen? I have been seeing shortages of seeds that I have been trying to purchase. The out of stock tag is on many varieties and it is on multiple suppliers. Is there a run on seeds like toilet paper taking place?? Ask yourself how can we promote this great idea in your local area to inspire people to grow a Victory garden for themselves. Gardener Scott any ideas you could share with us?
There are more people looking into growing food and some hoarding may be taking place. But sharing seed is a wonderful deed by many gardeners. One gardener with one seed packet can educate and help many others.

That's great! I'm glad to hear you're starting a channel. I use CyberLink PowerDirector 16 to edit. My top tip is to just do it. It takes a long time and many videos before you begin to figure it out and get comfortable. Spend time learning how to build your channel from the many great channels that focus on that. Good luck.

I've done a victory garden for years. I'm at a new place this year trying to carve out a garden now. I was wondering if you could maybe talk a little about planting bareroot fruit trees on monday live stream soil prep, mulching, watering ect I have some ordered hopefully arriving soon

Yes, you should. Heat, light, and humidity will be different and plants should be slowly exposed to the changes.

Isn't the soil expensive? Cant grow anything in my ground it's mostly rock and sand and pine droppings.
It can be expensive, but there are cheaper ways to do it. I have a video about filling raised beds that offers a few different ways to save money.
It doesn't have to be expensive, and you don't *have* to have perfect Super Soil to make it worthwhile. Probably the lowest-cost way to start is to simply buy composted manure and mix it right into that sandy soil. Some municipalities give away compost or sell it for a low price.
The pine needles and cones will break down eventually, leave them in place and mix it all together. Look at it this way, some people have to *buy* sand or perlite to help loosen up their heavy soils, you're a step ahead of them. :) Maybe you're only able to buy a few bags of compost right now, but that will let you make at least a small plot that can grow an appreciable amount of greens and veg. You may decide it's best to build a raised bed, or just use containers (food grade 5-gallon buckets work very well and are cheap or free). Start with whatever you can afford and expand as you can.

Follow the info on the seed packets. It will tell you when to sow and how to sow. Use a good, amended soil and the plants should do fine.

Why did we ever get away from this movement. I come from Midwest farming families but am not a farmer but a gardener
Laziness, mainly. People easily get hooked on the convenience of instant gratification from grocery stores being constantly bulging with produce and processed instant crap, and fast food.
It's easy to avoid the work that gardening takes and succumb to advertisements about what food we should eat. Good for you to be a gardener!

It’s actually being studied from space right now. And it’s remarkable how just a few weeks of industrial halt has affected the planet. Not just cars...AIRPLANES!! ..The trade off of course is that people are in a deep deep pickle now. My grandfather used to say “there’s never a bad wind that doesn’t blow some good to someone”
