Also, Jenny was so broken because her father had been sexually abusing her for much of her young life. That's why she was eventually sent to live with her grandmother. However, she continued to think of herself as unworthy and undeserving of love.
I think they missed that part back at the first time seeing the house as it's subtle, not subtle and is probably lost in translation
It's a pity Jenny was so badly affected for so long. Would had been a different life for her and Forrest otherwise

I've watched many reactions & most people are angry with Jenny throughout the whole movie missing the reason why she runs away from love, but these gentlemen were very sympathetic.

Every scene breaks my heart
This is a tough one to translate to other cultures. The wrinkles of US History the movie riffs off won't be caught easily. Plus understanding Forrest's own quirks rely partly on understanding how he talks--more than just the words I mean.
That said, they did get many important things out of it.
And his name after the KKk leader too lol. That went over the head of the reaction guys but it’s understandable since they’re not American
Forest Jump is a delightful, gentle movie. Although so much bad stuff happens to him, he never loses sight of the person he is or stops being a genuinely nice person. And he ultimately ends up with a good life. A lot of the jokes require an understanding of American history, but it's still a fun movie (and often a sad one at times) even without that background.
Two fun facts about this movie: Forest Gump's trademark drawl came about by accident. After weeks of working with a dialect coach to get a softer Alabama accent, the child actor they had playing the young Forest just couldn't lose his drawl. So Tom Hanks proposed that rather than trying to change the way the boy talked, wouldn't it be easier for him to learn to speak like the boy? And this the Forest Gump voice was born, and it become one of the things that made the character so iconic.
Another fun fact: As an early investor in Apple, Forest Gump probably had a net worth of $5.7 billion (accounting for inflation). And that's just from his Apple Investments. The movie implies that he'd be a millionaire JUST from his shrimping business.
Another fact:
Inspired by this movie, a chain of restaurants was opened called Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. They also sell T-shirts with the name.

Yes, thank you for mentioning that about the accent/southern drawl thing with the young Forrest actor and Tom Hanks. I heard (or maybe read) about that too, although I can't remember from where.

Great reaction! It is very difficult for people unaware of US history to catch all the historical events in this movie, yet the personal story still seems to work.
This movie illustrates more than anything how important family and a good upbringing is to a child. Jenny had all the potential in the world but grew up in a terrible situation. It affected every decision she made for most of her adult life. As Naveed said.... her father ruined her life. Meanwhile Forrest had his challenges just to be 'normal' in life. But Forrest had a loving and supportive mother who encouraged him to be everything he could be. As a result, he thrived - in spite of the hurdles and challenges that life gave him. Each of their upbringings were a result of their support and love from family.

It always gets to me that part
These two men have beautiful hearts, you can tell, they have empathy, compassion, they don't have all the American social pressures of what means to be man or how they should be or how they have to be...where they are, men have compassion and empathy, loyalty, true of who they are,
that shows tears, shows hurt, show emotions, they are like innocent, away from the corruptions of American chaos.
They remind me of me when I was younger so innocent, the world so new to me...people told me I had a beautiful heart and a good soul as a child and growing up, but the streets corrupted my mind and my heart and I became rebellious, and I lost that Innocence, today i can say I got my innocence back.
They remind me of a true friendship and who I really am a good humaning being.
These two fellas a really kind hearted guys.
Naveed and Mansoor are such intellectually minded and kind hearted men. I am digging these reactions. Keep them going and expose them to more cinematic offerings. :)

I grew up through most of these historical times and when this movie came out I was deep in my career working with developmentally challenged people. This movie spurred on my dedication and it also impressed upon American society the value of these individuals in our society. Thank you for showing this. It brought back memories and tears. Your genuine reaction is priceless!
I have seen this movie more times than I can count. But your reactions at Forrest at Jenny's grave also made my tears flow!

The assassinations (and attempted assassinations) were all real historical events, and the part where he sees flashlights from his hotel was a big scandal in US politics in the 70s that made the president resign. The man who tried to assassinate President Reagan (the last one they showed) just got out of jail a few years ago! The part where Forrest tried to give a speech was a protest against the war, and they thought he was there to protest too so they asked him to give a speech. :) Your reaction was great and so heartfelt. I love this movie because it shows us that what we think of as a disability, Forrest was the one who withstood all these hard things with courage and hope, while the "smart" people found it harder to do, like Jenny struggling with trauma her whole life. By the way, the actor who played Lt. Dan ever since this movie has been a big activist for veterans, he's a really cool guy.
My favorite joke in the movie is Lt Dan investing their shrimp money in what Forrest called a "fruit company." It was Apple, of course.

What's easy to miss in Forrest Gump is how intertwined his life was with several major events in recent American history. Everything from teaching Elvis Presley to dance, becoming a star running back of a major college football team, winning medals for valor in Vietnam, a world champion ping pong player- but also, personally meeting several American presidents including John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon. He was named after a KKK (racial terrorist hate group) leader, Bedford Forrest Gump, was present at the desegregation of all white schools in Alabama, made the phone call that unearthed the Watergate conspiracy (eventually causing Richard Nixon to resign as US President). There are many other historical moments throughout the movie that were fun to watch. Thanks for watching Forrest Gump. I hadn't seen it in several years and it was a pleasure watching again with you two.
My goodness, I love these guys' reactions. They are so empathic, its an absolute joy to watch them react. They are also extremely well spoken, which is not too common with those who come from tribes/small villages in countries such as theirs.
Love watching these guys-- their facial expressions and how they react to the movie as well as with each other! I would love to see them watch Sixth Sense soon. Maybe they will recognize Haley Joel Osment (Forrest Gump's son) in it!

This movie always gets me, especially now that I'm older, I loved a Jenny type once and sadly she turned out similar in the end. Some people, all the love in the world can't help.

Everybody always thinks Jenny kept Forrest from his son. It's 1994(and the movie is set earlier than that). Cell phones were not yet widespread. And Forrest was running the entire time. She contacted him as soon as she could. Out of all the hurtful stuff Jenny did to Forrest, I wanted to clear her name on that one.

Wonderful insight you have into this movie. Many reactors hate Jenny because she keeps running away from Forrest. But you could understand her damaged personality ( caused by her father.)
The reason she took the taxi and left once again was she still felt unworthy of Forrest and his pure spirit. On the night before, she and Forrest make love but that’s right after telling him “You don’t want to marry me.” In other words, I’m not good enough for you. How terribly sad!
The virus she died from, according to the book was hepatitis C which she probably contracted from sharing hypodermic needles with others to inject drugs.
When non-Americans watch this film they should really have someone there to pause it at certain moments and explain what's happening regarding the context of US history/culture. The scene where Forrest gets all the returned mail he sent Jenny while deployed in Vietnam especially always gets interpreted incorrectly as they do not recognize it's returned mail and think it's letters sent to Forrest.
Yes also the Washington anti-war protest, which they thought was a celebration in his honor.

Lt Dan is intended to be a representative of all the servicemen who came back with physical and mental health issues that never got the treatment they needed. PTSD hadn't become an official diagnosis and the hospitals set up to help the veterans never had the resources to help everyone who needed them. Combine the physical and mental trauma of losing your legs with Dan's belief that he should have died in the war but didn't, and you have one very angry person. He would have had no idea what to do with the rest of his life, both due to his injuries and because he never expected to live through it, and that kind of aimless existence would take its inevitable toll on his mental health. As we saw, it wasn't until he had some purpose again, being involved with the shrimp business, that he was able to recover his sense of self worth and deal with his mental health issues.
As for Jenny, the life she led is quite typical for those who have been sexually abused. The craving for attention and love, mixed with their self-loathing and dislike of physical intimacy, see them forming relationships with the sort of person their abuser was, because that is what they are familiar with. The idea that someone could simply love them for who they are, unconditionally as Forrest does Jenny, is as impossible to understand as Forrest would find nuclear physics. Like Dan, it is only through confronting their past and the issues it created that they can find some inner peace. Many find it because they realize they have to do better for someone who depends on them, like Jenny did with Forrest jnr. It is also likely why she held off telling Forrest about him, so she could give him the sort of relationship they all needed. As for the virus that killed her, based on the time frame and description of the difficulties in treating it, I always assumed she'd contracted HIV at some point that had progressed into AIDS. I could be wrong, as I don't think even the director has been clear about it.
They actually made a Indian version of Forest Gump that came out in 2022 titled Laal Singh Chaddha. It's different, but still it's a pretty good movie.
man it's crazy to think the life Forrest Jr. would have after that. Seeing dead people and developing telepathic powers as a result of Jenny making a deal with Vought. cant blame her tho, she needed the money to raise her kid on her own. but that kid sure continued his father's path of crazy adventures

To the international people who have seen and will see this movie, it’s a satire of actual US history events. It makes fun of them, but also highlight the importance and sadness of some of these events. If you’re also interested, there’s a Korean version called ODE TO MY FATHER. It’s not like Forrest Gump, but the story also highlights Korean history and pop culture references that centers around the main characters.
Forest's speech is in the trivia for this movie. Maybe the guys at CinePhiles can find it for you. He says in part, "Sometimes people go home from Vietnam to their mommies and daddies without arms and legs.... I can't remember all of it, but what he says sounds exactly like Forrest.

They completely missed that Jenny was sexually abused as a child, which is part of her main theme through most of the movie, and why she keeps rebuffing Forrest, because she mistakenly believes she doesn't deserve love. Not their fault, as the hints are very subtle even for many Americans.
Somethings are not talked about in some cultures even if it exist. Also, a lot of people even within the western world do not understand the connection between childhood trauma and a persons behavior later on in life. When a person misbehaves, it’s usually for a reason. Childhood trauma doesn’t excuse their behavior but it explains it.
Truly appreciate and enjoy your reactions, they always brighten my day.

I was sad to see so many cultural references that they didn’t understand. But this movie is packed full of just that. It was refreshing to see how they are sensitive to the nude/sex scenes.

1. The music rights alone must have cost a small fortune💲💲
2. Kurt Russel did the voice for Elvis.
3. IRL Sally Fields is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks.
4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that.
5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around.
6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date.

8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony..
9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his.

11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking.

You guys do a great job, but there are so many references you can not recognize just because it's US cultural history. I wish there could be someone to highlight some of them for you in real time.

real history events with the fictional character forest Gump, however just one small detail.. george Wallace wasn't president of America but governor off Alabama he was a known racist that unforced the Jim grow laws ,preventing blacks the right to vote or going to a white college, the then president johnson has to bring in the national guard Gary sinise who played Taylor in forest Gump did play George Wallace in a movie about him.
