I have such a soft spot for those old skyboxes in games. They stick out so much from the playable area, but theres something appealing about the artwork that aesthetically works for me. Its almost liminal I guess because you know that no matter where you go, you're really not going anywhere. Hard to explain, but they're great, just like how I have such a soft spot for the old pre-rendered backgrounds in survival horror and point-and-click games.
I think that's because at the time it would be either fairly bad 3D in terms of texture and geometry due to performane limitations, or a rather detailed 2D where you can get your artstyle roam free.
That's why modern games (well, not all of them but quite a bunch) have great 3D detailed backgrounds - there's enough processing power to allow rhat.
Back then it was either compromise 3D or whatever-you-draw 2D.
@enricofermi3471 I know, but I'm just saying that even today there's something visually appealing to me about these old 2D skyboxes that I appreciate just as much as the best 3D skyboxes we see today. It could just be the fact that I know someone had to draw those separately, so I appreciate the artistry more than or as much as developers placing assets in the background.
@@modernmobster Yeah, me too.
That's part of what is usually called the "soul" of the game.
It's my favourite part of PS2 games. Sky boxes in games like Yakuza, NFSUG2, they just have a feel to them.
@ImDannn definitely Yakuza when you're at the docks or on the rooftop of the Millennium Tower, and you're looking over Tokyo.
I thought they finished half life 2: classic for a second there.
I dont even know if its cancelled or not...
@@TheOnlyZoberone of the last posts on X (or whatever it is called) said it’s not cancelled
Samw
@@protocetidI call it Xitter. The "x" is pronounced like in mandarin.
@@SirYodaJedi Lol fitting, specially after Tesla pledged to promote the CCP's "socialist" values.
I find it super weird to see combine soldiers inside of the gold src engine
For some reason i love it
@@BONNIEE1983yeah same 😂😂
looks kind of like dishonored for some reason
fsr the metrocops look buff af too
The flat skyboxes really are nice when used well. They add a different atmosphere than the 3D skyboxes have.
You're absolutely right!
Yeah! I can't describe how, but they give off some cozy feeling
WE MAKING IT TO CITY 17 ON THE HYPERBOREA WITH THIS ONE 🚢🥶🚢🥶🚢🥶🚢🥶🚢🥶🚢🥶🚢🥶
**loud **_polar_**-class icebreaker noises**
It really gives off a unique vibe
dark and griddy vibe
half life 2 beta has always made me fascinated for some reason
Hi! I'm the one that made the traptown map way back in 2003. So I'm stunned you showed it, that really caught me off guard. I still think the HL2 beta is really cool. Love your videos, I watch them regularly!
Hey Chuck! Thanks for commenting. Surprised to see you here! Thanks so much!
omg the 3d skyboxes turned into 2d skyboxes add so much atmosphere
This honestly feels so much more immersive to me than the source engine maps
Hello give beta now
"Gordon, wake up it's time to Half-Lives in 1999"
Pick up that 5 polygon trashcan.
As a typical RADHAZ subscriber, I say... loving HL is like honoring your grandparents. You seem to know who they are and what their heritage is, but you also seem to learn something new about them. RADHAZ, thanks for the video, there is nothing like this on Russian RUclips.
Gives me the vibes of games like Deus Ex and Timesplitters.
Half-Life 2 on GoldSrc (or HL2 Gold as i'd like to call it) would have been a certified boomer classic.
The new intro is not bad, but smirking Gordon was legendary.
Love the new video opening, by the way! It may interest you to know that a lot of early HL2 textures are *in* a certain Goldsrc game, Condition Zero. They're all scaled down to about half-size but they're the same textures and they're mostly all ordered in the same order as well, going off of their names. Now this doesn't mean that's how the textures were, they were simple ports from HL2, but it's still interesting to note all the same.
1999 man those were the times! (I didn’t exist back then)
lmao same here
I think this would have made a fantastic remake (or demake, since it's going back in terms of engine and technical visuals) of Beta, since the engine is much "lighter", there's no requirements/expectations to be met in terms of technical graphics, only atmosphere and visual coherence, and any modern-ish PC would be enough to both play it or make it.
Of course, I've no idea if working in goldsrc may be more difficult than modern source engine due to instrumental evolution in model import, logic and mapping.
But if a reliable and trustworthy mod team put their effort, I feel we may have got a great actual game, not just a set of maps.
I will stand by this... And you can sue me.
HL2 beta maps are, unique. Depressing. But undercooked. And for the best, i'm glad Valve went "ok, let's restart Hl2 lore".
While I personally would've liked to see OICW, and sniper rifle out of guns. And few of the older models in retail. I would be lying if I didn't say that retail just did hl2 beta feeling of, vacant, depressing and... "dark n gritty"
Sh00t me on that last one.
I love GoldSrc so much, it has an unmatched charmingly eerie vibe to it. Also, I love the new intro
Very cool, I didn't know about most of these. Also on the topic of HL2 inside of GoldSource I'd recommend checking out "Borea" by UbOh from the TWHL: Bridge The Gap map competition, it's basically a fully playable mini chapter taking place in Borealis and borrowing concepts from epistle 3. The only downside is that it uses the HL1 enemies by default (no combine skins or anything) but the mapping is very high quality.
Ooh, a new radhaz video!
I'm going as gordon freeman for halloween this year, i ordered the lab coat and the tie last night
And I'm getting Gordon glasses in my prescription!
You forgo about the hev suit.
@@Real_Gordon_Freeman sorry, Gordon. That's gonna have to wait. And I think you need it more.
so youtube apparently didnt notify me of this video
even when i have notifications on
Wow I love your video man
Half-Life 2 Beta on the GoldSource Engine is kinda weird but still works.
Half Life 2 Beta maps in source engine already had an atmosphere and eerie vibe but seeing them and walking around them in Goldsource feels even creepier
The city streets with the civil protection officers walking around combined with the music gave me Deus Ex vibes
Imagine if portal was in 1997 💀
If portal was in 1997 then half life would be started in the alpha development of the game.
@@Real_Gordon_Freeman true lol
This reminds me of thief: gold if you know the game
Mans fr just uploaded when everyone's busy ☠️so gritty.
That pathfinding map DOES look extremely similar to that area in HL1 where you fight the HECU on the catwalks shortly after you meet them for the first time. It's like two different rooms from that map mashed together.
it was that original map from We’ve Got Hostiles ported into Source and then again backported to goldsrc. C1A3A to be precise
honestly these maps give me Condition Zero Deleted Scenes vibes with how detailed they are.
Goldsrc lighting makes it look more dark and gritty
Babe, wake up a new radhaz video dropped.
You could say this is quite the demake, but still fairly impressive. However, I believe the fact that HL2 started on GoldSrc is actually a misconception. I can't remember where I've read about it, but there you have it. Could have been misinformation, but never seen proof of the contrary so far.
I can't find it right now (it's either on VCC or Combine Overwiki), but there's a "liblist.gam" file in the leaked stuff that implies it started off on GoldSrc.
@@RadiationHazardYT I see. Perhaps it was indeed the case, since Source started somewhere after all. I think it might have been some email conversations with ex-developers which said otherwise, but I really can't remember anymore lol.
Source was forked off of goldsrc in the beginning. Yes, they did start with goldsrc. They just worked more on it over time.
@@ActivisionDMCA Yeah. But I think when most people say "started on GoldSrc" also think that that engine was a suitable alternative for the final product, which is what makes this confusing, as I don't recall GoldSrc ever being seriously considered and later just ported over to Source once it was nearly finalized. They were both developed in parallel to my knowledge, just like they did with the Episodes.
Fun Fact: that structure at 7:05 is a guard tower modelled after concept art made by Viktor Antonov, who also worked on the game Dishonored, which also featured guard towers very similar to these
Cool to see after playing Raising The Bar Redux. Comfy vid. Thanks, Rad.
The real half life 2 beta
THOSE 2d SKYBOXES CAPTURE THE VIBE SO WELL! also love the intro!
It's amazing how quick your channel has grown congrats been enjoying your vids
I wonder how do you make a script for a new video?
goddamn this new intro is beatiful
This feels odd.
Borealis is a boat to hyperborea
2:39 - Well, I think if I saw all of Half-Life in this style, I'd be very happy.
PS: I immediately had the urge to recompile this in BetaSource and see it for myself.
PSS: Happy to know most the assets used in this redesign of the map still exist in the final game's files.
Alternative reality where Laidlaw stuck with the Air Exchange.
Late 2001, Half Life 2 releases.
After it's success, it's followed by 2 expansions, one in 2002 by Arkane called Half Life 2 : Resistance, about a Conscript rebel named Mitchell hunting a elite combine unit under a transformed Xenian Overlord,
and
Half Life Aftermath, a official expansion following Gordon after the destruction of the Citadel and trying to track down Elena Mossman, attempting to escape City 17.
Half Life 3 then released using the new Source engine in 2004, following Gordon, Alex and the Resistance in the wasteland hunting Mossman who has become the new Combine overlord, and plans on opening a new portal to the Combine overworld.
This might be Half Life 2
Wow this is amazing, totally got HROT vibes at 6:17
5:55 A better example of working vehicles in goldsrc are the tanks in Gunman Chronicles, as these were real model entities that worked very well.
The vehicles in CS are "func_vehicle" and these are brush entities with really bad collision and such.
the baked lighting lowkey looks great
10:40-10:56 Well, Source is exactly upgraded version of GoldSource.
Thanks! It's AMAZING and atmospheric❤
There's a fun little gameplay map in the style of Half-Life 2 for the first game, it's called Invasion 105. You can beat it in mere minutes if you know what you're doing, but the map itself is quite well made. It also came out around 2006 when there were no efforts to port HL2 to goldsrc
Not gonna lie, i would pay for a standalone mod that would recreate a whole campaign of Half Life 2 (Retail or beta) in GoldSrc. This is a thing of beauty!
honestly, if HL2 came out like this, it would have been still way ahead of its time.
Last year I tried to make a wasteland deathmatch map on GoldSource with an atmosphere similar to these maps, unfortunately I lost the files and i couldn't post it.
HL2 Beta Metrocops in GoldSrc is a look I love.
The Manhack arcade and outdoor city maps are my favourites out of all of them
those skyboxes are awesome
honestly, i kind of enjoy seeing half-life 2 beta stuff in gold source, it has a certain charm to it
The half-life 2 goldsrc from 1999 is surely upgraded version of goldsrc and it almost look like source engine
this is probably how the maps looked when they were first built in 2000-2001
5:38 we know why you cut the footage there
Perfect video for my birthday
Very interesting video! Shows how similar some of the oldest brushwork looks to the goldsrc. Still beta is beta. ❤
Not going to lie though, I was kind of hoping you would go insane in Vertigo maps. The OGs will know.😅
These map looks like an amalgamation of Deus Ex & Dishonored for some reason, probably because of the lighting & skyboxes.
Lets make opposing the bar but for fistful of frags, fistful of players
If this was Half-Life 2, This would mean that our Half-Life 2 would have been Half-Life 3, and we would have been waiting for half-life 4 for the last 20 years.
half life 2 beta beta?
If it was to be a 1999, it'd prolly have some changes to the engine. I asume they had kind of a higher poly and higher texture support back then and prolly some in dev programming stuff as well.
i like the way these beta maps look in the beta i really like this style
Who needs GoldSrc?
Nah, I just need GoldSauce
Literally just opened youtube
Daaaaamn this video come yeaaar agooo
Imagine a city made out of all the goldsrc and source maps stiched together
A very dark and gritty game.
That already existed for a while, actually. It's called Requiem Avenging Angels.
Deam looks pretty nice
i guess you could call this... a radiation hazard
After playing the Beta Minimalist mod, I really just wanted a more serious GoldSRC version of HL2 Beta. This might end up being it
The Half-Life 2 Beta on the Goldsrc engine is even darker and griddier
One of the actual 1999 Story ideas was a lot different for Half-Life 2 than the 2000-2001 Storyline (There wasn't much of a story though, just one of the main ideas known of the 1999 era) 1999 Half-Life 2 had Gordon go to other planets to kill Xen Forces
that was when they were playing with the idea of a half life 2 to begin with before the game entered serious production seemingly around mid 2000 based off some maps and other material in the leak where they had settled on the combine as the main antagonists by then but the wider details were worked out slowly
I've always thought what if Valve made HL2 in 2000. The Beta would've been in GoldSrce, game woukd be much shorter or same length and possibly could've been a whole different experience. This is very cool and we still have HL2 Classic to look forward to. Also we would've gotten HL3 already and be waiting on Half-Life 4.
Amazing :D
Fascinating
Amazing intro
This is incredible.
I want a half life 1 version of Hunt Down the Freeman lul
Thanks you so much
Now if elements of these GoldSrc maps would be useful for the actual HL2 beta maps.
I feel like this wouldnt have broken new ground, and wouldve had a hard time around 2000 next to games like No One Lives Forever
This was awesome!
Hl2 beta minimalist but serious version
10:07 goofy ahh running
The Minimalist mod is clearly made in 1999 too.
If half life 2 used goldsource
these give me heavy deus ex vibes for some reason
if it came out in 1999 we might have had a half life 3 in 2004
I'd very much rather have the moodier, more apocalyptic HL2 of the beta to what we got in the retail version.
Gordon Freeman
5:40 you're underestimating capabilities of goldsrc engine. I don't know if you already covered half-life rally mod.
the darkest and griddiest half life 2 video ever.
