When Richard Williams started on the film, it wasn't called "The Thief and the Cobbler". It was actually based on a series of books called "Mulla Nasruddin", which were based on fables from India. The author was on board at first and by 1972, they had completed three hours worth of animation. But then Williams accused the author's bookkeeper of embezzling his funds and in the fallout, all their completed work was scrapped. So Williams started over from scratch and put together a new story which became "The Thief and the Cobbler", but he had trouble finding people to fund it, as potential producers were astounded by his incredible animation, but were taken aback by his demanding perfectionism, which could result in a single shot taking months or even years to complete. After his success with "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", Warner Bros. offered to help Williams complete his film, but they warned him that if he didn't finish the film by a certain date, they would take the movie away from him and give it to the Completion Bond Company to finish. And when that deadline passed, he was still ten to fifteen minutes short. So, the Completion Bond Company seized the film, kicked Williams off the project and gave to a new director Fred Calvert, who was told to finish the movie as quickly and cheaply as possible. He not only rushed the film into completion but also reworked it into a musical, hoping to copy the Disney Renaissance, specifically the recent success of Disney's Aladdin, which was released just a year before this one. He also retitled it "The Princess and the Cobbler". One year later, Harvey Weinstein, the then boss of Miramx, secured the North American distribution rights and he changed it even further, including writing new dialogue, recasting most of the voices, and adding inner monologues to the titular thief and cobbler, who Williams intended to be mute. Again, he retitled it "Arabian Knight". This was the version most people saw in theaters and it bombed big time. There's no denying Williams was done dirty by Calvert and Weinstein, but he wasn't a total innocent victim, either. Like a lot of great artists, his business practices left a lot to be desired. He held his staff to harshly strict schedules, he would throw out days of work if it didn't meet his exact standards and he fired people pretty much every week of production. But his biggest tragic flaw is that while his animation is incredible, he never had a firm grasp on the story's overall layout. He didn't even have storyboards drawn until Warner Bros. got involved. Because of this, it feels more like he's trying to show off his animation instead of tell a good story. Williams himself was heartbroken when he lost control of his dream project and until his death in 2018, he refused to even talk about it. And while he acknowledged "The Recobbled Cut" and other re-edits for restoring interest in the film, he refused to watch any of them.
It's a shame this movie never got finished and ended up being nearly lost because Disney took the idea for themselves and re-made it into a more kid friendly musical. This film has such interesting stylization and FASCINATING animation! The number of years it took to make and _still_ not get finished is crazy, but the man behind the whole project was clearly very passionate about it. It's sad that so much effort went to waste... Frankly, this movie IS the OG Aladdin, and it deserved so much better than what it got.

Fun Fact: Donald Pleasence (best known for his role as Dr. Sam Loomis in all but one of the first six *"HALLOWEEN"* films, Blofeld in *"You Only Live Twice",* and Dr. Jack Seward in John Badham's 1979 adaptation of *"Dracula")* did the animal vocals for Phido the Vulture in the 1992 workprint and the 1993 Fred Calvert Cut of *"The Thief and the Cobbler".* But when they did the 1995 Miramax Cut of *"Arabian Knight",* most of Pleasence's vocals (with the exception of a few squawks) were replaced with a new voice: Eric Bogosian.
6:31 When you said _"I don't like musicals."_ I personally have a love/hate relationship with musicals. Some I do enjoy, such as _The Nightmare Before Christmas_ and some Disney movies and, while I haven't seen the stage musical of _Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief,_ I do have the soundtrack and the songs were not only catchy, but the singers and lyrics were WAY truer to the book than the fucking movie was. But there are some I don't like due to the songs being annoying, the songs not evolving the story, I don't like the story, and/or someone I know ruining it for me through their obsession.
yeah, i'm a fan of the late Richard Williams' unfinished masterpiece (he died on August 19, 2019, he was 86 years old). while i'm a guilty pleasure fan of the Miramax version (as i've grown up with it and still like it to this day), the true version of the animated film that director/animator Richard Williams originally wanted/conceived is shown on youtube channel TheThiefArchive (or recently, The Thief and the Cobbler Archive Official, by Garrett Gilchrist).
I saw The Recobbled Cut. It’s worth looking at. I remember the commercials for the Miramax release when I was watching School House Rock on VHS. It was a LONG time ago obviously. Vincent Price although in a bad movie is still just a FANTASTIC voice and still gives Zigzag plenty of life. May he Rest In Peace. But if you want to see what that man can REALLY do, watch the Great Mouse Detective. He’s the villain called Professor Ratigan and his acting is STELLAR. (Favorite lines are “Oh I love it when I’m nasty.” And “I was thinking of the most appropriate way to cause your demise, but I had so many ideas, so I just decided to use them all.”) I’m sure Critic did a review of it, or at least will one day since he’s been doing full reviews of animated Disneys every once in a while. So watch that to at least get a good idea. And those are fun.

Since you are doing movie review channel reactions I figured I'd give you a suggestion: You should totally react to Pitch Meetings (originally on Screen Rant, now on their own channel). There are only a few channels that have reacted to them, but they are really hilarious. And since there is very limited content from the major companies (it's mostly just the skits), I think it should be pretty safe copyright-wise as well.
I cant even say reactions are an easy buck. If you just want to be as simple as possible maybe. But even reactions take a good bit of effort to make quality and worth watching. Layouts, the thought of a face am or just audio and maybe an avatar. Props to the people that do 2d avatars and literally manually switch out face expressions in post. Thats literally added work if you don't just have a vtuber avatar rigged up. Then you have to think about how much people want to hear you talk before getting into the reaction and how often you may pause for, the reason behind pausing, and if you pause for way too long. Many reaction channels have this as the biggest hurdle as they pause way too often and talk way too much on a tangent trying to make a joke out of several minor hiccups and end up turning a fifteen minute reaction minimum into a 45 minute reaction. Or they say they're about to get started and then distract themselves talking about something and take five extra minutes. Reacting is certainly an artform with its own brand of creativity and an audience. People love seeing how others react to things they love and or hate. With how accessible it is its obvious there's gonna be ones that make it and others that might not. I'm still trying to force myself to figure out how I'd rig up an avatar.

Okay Metroid Other M is notoriously the most hated Metroid Game ever because it makes Samus talk way too much when shes a silent badass bounty hunter that ices aliens like its nothing and instead turns her into a fragile drama queen. Its probably because the game was made by Ninja Theory which doesn't have a great handle of female character writing to begin with. If Metroid Dread didn't come out, Other M would have been the coffin the franchise pretty much died in. Dread took years of behind the scenes work to come out.
