I was finally able to grow a cabbage and kale without having to fight the pests by using an insect cover. I built a small caterpillar tunnel just for greens. Worked wonderfully
I also grow a chicken garden near the coop. I grow all kinds of greens, watermelon, small tomatoes like currant size (which they love) and cucumbers that I let grow big and then l cut them in half. They wait by the fence waiting for me to harvest them treats for the day from their garden.
Spring cannot get here fast enough !! Binge watching garden videos and buying excessive amounts of seeds from everywhere just isn't cutting it anymore!! I need some sunshine and warm weather NOW!!!! I pray for an early Michigan spring :) Happy New year everyone !
It amazes me that here in west central Indiana I am in Zone 5b and you are north of us and you are in zone 6b. Funny how the lines go. I have just put in another order for seeds, yesterday. I'm trying tomato seed starting this year again, last time was at least 20 yrs ago. Hoping for success. Lol..
Have you ever tried Kohlrabi? The taste is a great mixture between cabbage and the stem of broccoli. So delicious. And I find that the cabbage moth doesn't seem to want to destroy these as much as other Brassicas. The great thing about them is the base is a solid round ball, so they are so much easier to process and can be used as a cabbage in all manners. If you are even mildly interested then I recommend buying a pack of seeds and sowing a couple for trial, you may be pleasantly surprised. They are almost fought over in my home, the Husband and 9 and 12 year old all get excited when they're on the menu 😀 I will never NOT grow them now 😍 Very easy to grow, they come in a 'white' or purple.
I can't wait to see your garden spring back to life Rachel- I always grow all my own sweet potato slips & actually have a couple of beds in at the moment- wish I could send you photos of my garden ??? Cheers Denise- Ausalia
Same with me, I used to grow things that my family didn't like, now I only grow what my family likes to eat, once in a while I will grow something new just to see if we like it or not.
I ended up ordering a large batch of seeds that arrived before Christmas, partly because I was seeing things in my wishlist disappear! I wasn't able to get exactly what I was after (and only 1 variety of peas instead of the collection of 3 I was intending to get), but I got most of it. I'm in zone 3 in central Canada - or zone 2b, if I go by the notation on my Vesey's catalog. Since moving back to my family farm, last year was our first year gardening, and it was far more successful than it had any right to be! LOL My mother had a massive garden, but the area it was in has been neglected for too long. We will likely be buying a dump truck's worth of soil this spring, if we can swing it. If we do, it won't be all for this year's gardening, but for when we build our permanent raised beds in a completely different area. Last year, we ordered seeds from Vesey's and we were quite happy with them. That is where the bulk of our seeds are from, this year. We also got some from Baker Creek (with a couple more small orders stuck in the mail right now). We've got some backordered seeds to come when they are in stock again, and others will be shipped when it's planting time for our zone. We're pretty excited about gardening this year! I'll be starting our onion seeds indoors once I figure out how to convert a large aquarium into a cat-proof greenhouse. ;-)
I am learning to scale down the different varieties that we are growing and focusing just on our most favorite items. This year we plan to limit the variety but grow more of them. Have my seed list ready now, checking it twice and then will start placing my order.
Ah, the temptation of seed catalogs! I usually place my orders in January, but ordered pre-Christmas after the rush of beginners last year. I love my boxes arriving from Seed Savers and Pinetree. I picked up my seed starting soil from the local growers shop, and am ready to go! Sweet potato slips are so easy to start, and a great way to meet the urge to start something growing! I'm in Michigan 5B with my own centennial farmhouse of a similar vintage to yours :)
After last years seed shortages, I went to dollar store got 40 packets 4/1.00... they are smaller packets but nongmo, non hybrid, look on pack be sure theres some heirlooms.... I am ordering through my regular online, but not taking chances! I do danvers carrots every yr, no issues freezing or canning... we do basic "staple" gardening as well... no pumpkins, do butternut squash.. I do start my own seed have a grow stand.
We found huge selection of seeds. Bought plenty. We just moved got bigger yard so next year when we get the place we want our garden well get one going. No one on this property had a garden so we have our work cut out for us. I’ll miss the garden.
I got all my seeds ordered and in hand! I also got my 21 qt. Roaster to do the tomato sauce and salsa canning . Looking forward to a prosperous year! Thanks for all you do!
I’m already harvesting my red acre cabbage and green cabbage Chinese 🥬. Coast of Ca 9b spoiled I plant year round never freezes here light frost.💖can’t wait to see your garden plan 👍❤️
I got all of my seeds ordered and received back by the end of November of 2020. I got my winter seeds for 2020, spring of 2021 and also winter of 2021. I've just started to get them organized by when I have to plant them and just this weekend am getting it written down on paper as to where they will be planted and when to start them either indoors or outdoors.
Glad to hear you have had good luck with both Hoss and MIgrdener seed. I am trying both this year. I like your coined phrase 'staple garden' I tell my husband I want to grow what we eat. 😁 Boy does it take a lot of peas! I harvested only enough for a few pots of soup and a few potpies this past year.
Happy New Year. We have used Fedco in Maine for years to get seeds. But placed our first order with MIGardner & Bakers Creek in addition this year. I am looking forward to new varieties and the third garden bed I created in October. My tiny back yard won't even need mowing with all the plant life.
Hi. Rachel. Sorry, I can't do that because I live in the city. My area is in the Bronx, New York. There is no where to plant anything. My area is all buildings, and streets. I just love all your videos Rachel. Have fun planting your seeds this spring. God Bless you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Maria.😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Ok, Maria, you need to make yourself a goal of moving to a place that at least has a sunny patio or balcony. You deserve to grow some of your food, girl! It’s so amazing and addictive!
Here in lower MA we are zone 6b as well. Good to know I can follow along with you and it will hopefully be good for my area as well. Hoping to have my first raised beds next year...did container gardening on my porch this year...now I'm hooked. Want to grow enough of the staples for the year. Can't wait to get where you are :)
So glad you guys are back on RUclips. I hope your holiday was wonderful. Looking forward to following you on this years gardening and canning fun. I actually got my brother into it also
We are in Chicago and our thyme, rosemary, chives and oregano all come back as perennials every year. I grow them in pots and they have been coming back for the past 10 years.
Rachel, you can buy a bag of feed sunflowers for the chickens and throw out a handful of those to grow too. Just cover over and heavily feed them. Also, you'll probably need several packages of corn to grow. That was for a very small patch, I used 2 pkgs.
Minimum of 4 rows to pollinate corn properly, so I've read. They're heavy feeders too: organic dry fertilizer, worm castings, then did fish emulsion. Figure at most about 2 ears per seed that you plant of corn. Moles and birds stole several of my planted corn seeds, I did 2 per hole, I should have went 3 seeds. I'm laughing now at how much time I spent going back through reseeding that "corn field" tiny patch. Best corn I've ever had though!
I'm a big fan of UF Seeds, too. Great small seed company with lots of heirloom varieties. I'm trying some from Kitazawa Seeds this year, too. There are many good small seed companies out there.
I love the calendula flowers and have made salves with the petals. It was my first time saving their seeds last year. I love the planning of seeds new seeds and love your videos too.
I have been buying seeds and stocking up for months. It's bit addictive. But, I am set for the next few years. And I will probably share with a few friends. :) Oh, and I'm waiting for one more MIGardener order right now.
Rach: on Oregano.... it winters over well. After last frost... take a meat fork (or pitch fork if it was a big plant) stab and bust up the roots a bit . They love the abuse... ( lol ) and come back like gang busters. I love my all my herbs but man... fresh Oregano is so different than the dried stuff from the store. So floral and fragrant. I use it anywhere i would toss in fresh Rosemary.
Yes, Hoss Tools seeds are absolutely the best. I ordered Hoss Tools, MIgardener and Baker Creek so far. I have pre-ordered 12 tomato plants grown by a master gardener locally. She picks varieties meant for my area. So in May, I'll pick up that order. I ordered purple sweet potato slips this year. I've never grown them before. So I'll get them in May.
I was just going through my seeds to make sure I had everything that I wanted to grow this year. I ended up having to do another order for a few missing items. I'm doing strawberries for the first time this year, I have them in my greenstalk.
I'm not a great gardner. I planted a large garden last year. Got huge tomato plants got zero tomatoes off it. Huge cucumber plants and got one 2 inch cucumber. Carrot didn't get over an inch over 4 months. Kale was fantastic along with butternut squash. Gardening is hard but worth learning as I go.
You might be a great gardener in the learning phase! Gardening is something that is a continual learning experience. If you get great plants and no fruit, you might be using too much nitrogen for fertilizer, like too much manure. Nitrogen makes the leaves of the plants grow, but you need a more well rounded fertilizer or compost for fruit growth. I’m sure there could be other reasons you had failures, like maybe planting too late or watering too much, etc., there are a lot of variables. Keep growing and keep trying, asking lots of questions at your local garden center. You can do this!
We ordered our seeds back in December. I’ll be starting my tomatoes and pepper at the beginning of February. Well also be going ahead and planting some carrots, beets, broccoli, kale and spinach here in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to this growing season.
I love the MIGardener. I ordered all my seeds from Baker Creek. I buy plants at my local garden center. We do not have that issue here in mid western WI. It gets cold and stays cold. I won't get to plant till late May. But I will start my seeds in the house and set on deck during days in May, then plant after Memorial day
Oregano perennializes here in Southcentral Alaska, so I imagine it will work for you as well. I would add Territorial Seed to your list, and Pinetree for small scale gardeners.
I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts on container gardening. I live in an upper level apartment with a little patio in Oregon but I love watching your videos and learning about homesteading, I'm so eager to grow and can my own goodies but I don't want to wait until I have land. I don't know if this is at all an area you'd have knowledge to share on but I love your videos and learning from you ❤️
Hello just watching some of you older garden videos again. Hehe. I’m wondering if you would ever expand your garden area? Love watching your videos over and over every year. 🥰 I order from Hoss tools as well I’m actually from the town they are from but bought from them before I even knew it. Crazy!! I love their company. Every order is always sent the next day except my potatoes. And my seeds are always 100% germination!
I have to say, Rachel, I’m a little surprised you’re raring to go so soon after working your fingers to the bone just a couple months ago. I thought you might take a year off like you mentioned. I’m so glad you’re not, though! I ordered peas from Botanical Interests, broccoli from West Coast Seeds(Canadian) and I’m putting in an order for mostly flowers to Seed Savers Exchange soon. I usually buy my veggie seeds from Victory Seed Co, but I think I have enough of most things. The ones I ordered are specific varieties I wanted. I didn’t have a garden this last year, I felt the Lord was telling me not to, which was weird and surprising. Well, He knows what He’s doing, I had longhaul Covid for 9 months straight and am still having aftereffects off and on. I would totally not have been able to take care of a garden, I was on the couch most of the summer. Drinking my home-canned apple, blackberry and tart cherry juices with some elderberry syrup mixed in has seemed to really help. I have lettuce and carrots and spinach growing in my greenhouse and can’t wait to get started planting seeds!
Hello, I’m so excited getting ready to order my seeds from where u recommended. First time grower I’ll be growing with u this year. Have a great weekend 💙💙
Where do you buy seed potatoes and strawberry plants? New gardener here, I’ve really learned a lot from your garden and preserving videos! Thanks for sharing
I have received my Baker Creek order but I am waiting on Hoss Tools to arrive. That should be all the seeds I need except for seed potatoes. I plan on getting those locally because they are cheaper that way in my experience.
Yeah seeds! Calendula grows better for me in the fall (no frost here). Summer is too hot. Did you get pollen free sunflowers? I know people who grow them for cut flowers preference them but my bees LOVE sunflower pollen.
Oh, that feeling of "Must have been feeling experimental" when the seed orders arrive. I wish Seed Ordering Corrie would stick around and give Food Growing Corrie the run down on what she ordered. Not always the case though 😂
I ordered my veggie, sunflower, zinnia & onion starts this week and ordered Harvest guard lids today. Do you use any of the reusable lids? We also have two doxies. You need to put them in your videos.
Where have you gotten your sweet potato starts from in the past? I'm in Ohio and I've ordered them from RH Shumway a few times. They grew well, but if there is a more local source, I'd like to buy from them. My local garden centers don't typically carry them. Thanks for all the great info.
I do square foot gardening, with this method I plant 8 peas every square foot. I've never had much success with a fall crop of peas, so I'll plant only in spring to this year. I plan on planting the entire perimeter fence of my garden if I can get the fencing redone in time.
@@1870s so they will be trellised up the fencing right? I’m hoping to plant mine on a cattle panel along the center of a 4x8’ raised bed and wanting to be able to plant some stuff around the outside of the bed yet. Thanks for replying 😍 love your videos!
They will be soft, but shouldn't immediately fall apart when handled. When I heat for serving I heat butter and seasons first then add carrots and cook quickly. No more than 5 mins
I want to plant potatoes for the first time this year. Where do you get starts (if you don't have any downstairs :-) ) Do you just use grocery store potatoes?
Keep looking everywhere. I am in Ky and I found lids at walmart yesterday (14th). Ace Hardware is expecting some too. I also found some flats at save a lot. Good luck and best canning wishes.
I was finally able to grow a cabbage and kale without having to fight the pests by using an insect cover. I built a small caterpillar tunnel just for greens. Worked wonderfully
Thank you for your message
I also grow a chicken garden near the coop. I grow all kinds of greens, watermelon, small tomatoes like currant size (which they love) and cucumbers that I let grow big and then l cut them in half. They wait by the fence waiting for me to harvest them treats for the day from their garden.

Cover cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower with row covers and put rocks or bricks on the bottom of the covers till they grow larger. Then take it off.
I’m in central Indiana and have a flower pot of greens in a southern exposure window. After I’ve harvested a couple of times I start another pot.
I’m already harvesting my red acre cabbage and green cabbage Chinese 🥬. Coast of Ca 9b spoiled I plant year round never freezes here light frost.💖can’t wait to see your garden plan 👍❤️

Pots of herbs & micro lettuce leaves on windowsill, easy way to start x
I just got my Baker Creek seed catalog yesterday...I was like a kid at Christmas!

I love Hoss Tools.Good seeds and tools!
Connie try HossTools.
I called my sister to let her know that it has arrived. We call it "seed porn" due to all of the flowers ;)

Just ordered from Dixondale! Thanks for the reminder!!
I have been buying seeds and stocking up for months. It's bit addictive. But, I am set for the next few years. And I will probably share with a few friends. :) Oh, and I'm waiting for one more MIGardener order right now.

I have sort of saved my catalogs to sit and look at all at once... have about 7 waiting for me!
I’m so excited to see what you are doing for this year! It’s just my hubby and I too.
Yes, Hoss Tools seeds are absolutely the best. I ordered Hoss Tools, MIgardener and Baker Creek so far. I have pre-ordered 12 tomato plants grown by a master gardener locally. You can get seed potatoes from your local feed store. At least, in Texas you can.
Your going to love the calendula. And the medicinal properties they have is wonderful.
I’ve had great luck with Hoss Tools seeds too!

Loved hearing the pups! I;ve got three mini doxy barky babies!
We ordered our seeds back in December. I’ll be starting my tomatoes and pepper at the beginning of February. Well also be going ahead and planting some carrots, beets, broccoli, kale and spinach here in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to this growing season.
For someone new to your channel, they are in for an amazing ride!!! I love getting my seeds in the mail. It’s like opening up Christmas again!!!
It was definitely discouraging last year not growing enough to eat fresh and preserve. Thanks to you both for all your tips!
One of the best packages to arrive in the mail. Still waiting for my Catalog, it is on the way. So can't wait to see what you are doing this year.
I got Baker Creak catalog in also can't wait to start planting
I like to try a couple new seed companies each year. I will need to add Hoss to my list of companies to try! Thank you for sharing your seeds!
I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts on container gardening. I live in an upper level apartment with a little patio in Oregon but I love watching your videos and learning about homesteading, I'm so eager to grow and can my own goodies but I don't want to wait until I have land. I got to buy onion plants from Dixondale Farms & pelleted carrot seeds of a larger storage crop variety..
Awesome! I notice right after Christmas I get bit by the bug to get planning. I’m going to try your onion source this year. Wish me well!! 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing this and the seed companies you use. I mam also in zone 6b with n emphasis on stables. Ordering my seeds now.
I love Hoss tools! I ordered their seeds last year and this year, you get them super fast! I agree they are solid with germination as well!
Hope you guys had a wonderful Christmas and a brilliant new year! I bought seeds from sustainable seeds and seed savers exchange
I buy my seeds from The Garden Hoard seed sompany, all organic vege and flower seeds in Howell MI, allorganic and high germination rates
My seed order came today, thought I better get in early just incase. Can’t wait for growing season to start.
thanks! I will check out Hoss seed co.
I’ve done raised beds, but I think we will go back to In ground.
Hoss is some good seeds. I have moved to use them for all my seeds. You pay a little more but it’s worth it!
Walla walla onions. Yum.
I have to say, Rachel, I’m a little surprised you’re raring to go so soon after working your fingers to the bone just a couple months ago. I thought you might take a year off like you mentioned. I’m so glad you’re not, though!

Hello, I’m so excited getting ready to order my seeds from where u recommended. First time grower I’ll be growing with u this year. Have a great weekend 💙💙
Hoss is the boss! #hosstools
I just ordered all of my seeds!!! Can't wait until I get them

Been there myself! 😆
I am just trying out Hoss Tools this year. I always have issues with germination and cabbage moths too..
I’m zone 4b. Got a ways to go.
Calendulas rock!!!
Could you do a review of what you thought of your greenstalk planter? I thought about buying one but I am on the fence
I order my tomato seeds from Totally Tomatoes 🍅
Incase you were planting sunflowers for your honey bees, Procuts I believe are pollenless.
My 3rd video of y'all's in 2 days playing catch up lol. I feel spoiled
I am just getting my orders together now. I am in zone 7 and I hope I'm not too late. I'm sure there will be some unavailable.
I have ordered from johnny seed and sow true seed. Last year I found at my local farm store
nice video
Greetings from the Sacramento Valley. I have just ordered seeds. Where do you get your sweet potato slips and seed potatoes.
What pea variety(ies) do you grow in your garden?
May i ask how many jars you put up for the winter?
What is the best carrots to can? I canned my carrots I grew and they were mush. I even cut them big. They were discusting.
I've had the best results so far with Danvers
How long of a row will your 1700 peas cover? And do you do several plantings?!
I want to plant potatoes for the first time this year. I have seen prices online for 5 lb bags anywhere from $20.00 to $29.00 , is that normal price ?
When I canned carrots they stayed together but when I took them out of jar they were very soft. Any suggestions?
They will be soft, but shouldn't immediately fall apart when handled. When I heat for serving I heat butter and seasons first then add carrots and cook quickly. No more than 5 mins
Thanks Rachel!
I'm looking to can carrots for the first time this year. Which varieties do you find can the best?
Danversand Bolero are excellent storage carrots, royal chanteney and nantes carrots did not hold up well during canning for me.
I want to plant potatoes for the first time this year. Where do you get starts (if you don't have any downstairs :-) ) Do you just use grocery store potatoes?
I usually would buy a bag from the local farm store they always have seed potatoes in the early spring
@@1870s Thank you - love your channel.
Do you ever grow onions?
Calendula makes a great anticeptic slave.
Do they deliver to UK
I’m
Concerned about not being able to buy jar lids? I can a lot but can’t find lids
Keep looking everywhere. I am in Ky and I found lids at walmart yesterday (14th). Ace Hardware is expecting some too. I also found some flats at save a lot. Good luck and best canning wishes.
