You are right and she is right regarding BMI not being the most reliable tool for evaluation of health. You could have someone with a BMI of 16 dying from cancer.
KETO and FASTING worked for me, not only did i lose 60 pounds but i also reversed type 2 diabetes. constant heartburn and leaky gut symptoms, problems with constant lethargy and just zero motivation just vanished in two weeks..... im no scientist with facts or numbers from big fancy studys......im just a man who tired everything to lose weight for a decade and failed untill keto and fasting. before keto i honestly felt like i was waiting to die. ive maintained this lifestyle for 10 years and so far im healthy and doing great.
Hard to say anything meaningful about this without further knowledge. First thing that comes to mind is, what did you eat before? It's well probable, even highly likely, that your keto diet plus fasting was a lot healthier than what you used to eat. Thus we could compare one with the other. But it says nothing about if keto is a good or "the best" diet possible (and of course there are tons of different kinds of keto diets which differ from each other a lot; same is true for fasting). But anyway, congrats on you finding a way to live a healthier life!
Leto and fasting do not fix type 2 diabetes and does not increase energy However, loosing weight and get to a healthier weight, healthier diet plus exercise do fix both
@@HSLSFirstHow can you be so peremptory? This is one study among a lot: Ketogenic Diet Benefits to Weight Loss, Glycemic Control, and Lipid Profiles in Overweight Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trails
Everyone says weight loss when what they really mean is fat loss. Nobody wants to lose lean mass, bone mass, or any other mass except for fat mass and cancerous masses. We should petition for using better language and not worry about peoples delicate sensibilities.
Hot button! Done 2 years on keto. Dropped 205 kg and took my triglyceride to HDL ratio dropped from 3.2 to 1.9. A1c from 5.3 to 4.6. No intestinal discomfort. Slightly higher LDL but that is irrelevant.Dropped from 44cm waist to 36cm.
Meanwhile I know people on a plant-based diet who have been for over seventy years and never once had weight issues. And many others enjoying the long-term efficacy and healthspan benefits have a well-planned whole food plant-based diet. But hey your 2 years in with elevated cholesterol. Hopefully you can find a way to do it leaving animals off your plate and that should help. There's nothing easier and more awesome than a well-planned vegan diet 😊
18/6 Fasting, eliminating processed foods, sugar, grains/flour, seed oils, etc AND low carb are extremely healthy and effective when combined. When started this, I lost 20 lbs in six weeks, went off antihistamines, went off ibuprofen as my arthritis pain subsided substantially, resting pulse rate went down 20 beats a minute, stopped napping and do well on less sleep at night, brain fog and afternoon sleepiness went away.
Keto may not be for everyone. Some people cannot get over the ketogenic flu as their body adapts to the absence of processed sugar and refined carbohydrates. We’ve been brainwashed to believe that eating too often especially 3 meals a day and breakfast is good for us. That we need bread and potatoes to fill us up. Mid afternoon sugar boosts. All these do is increase hunger as there is a total lack of protein, monounsaturated fats and other necessary nutrients. Many people aren’t applying keto correctly. They’re still consuming the wrong types foods, still overeating and consuming sugary foods and drinks that throw them out of fat burning mode.
@@lmusima3275 Absolutely, the idea of keto is to get into long term ketosis and it doesn't take much to completely halt that process. As an aside, the keto flue is a result of the release of water which is no longer needed to store glycogen. But along with that water goes magnesium, potassium, and sodium. So replenishing electrolytes and water will virtually eliminate the keto flue. You are fortunate if you're able to find sugar free electrolytes in any conventional store.
@@notjustforme I don't think we disagree at all. I am actually glad you brought up 'True' keto vs. 'Fad' keto. There is a vast difference and when people try keto and say it didn't work for them I find they were trying 'Fad' keto. They where trying to stay in ketosis even though they where consuming sugar and carbs with 'keto' treats and wondering why keto didn't work for them. When I say it doesn't take much to halt keto I mean you can eat a small amount of sugar or carbs and it will stop ketosis. It doesn't take much to do that. However, I totally agree with you that if you stop ketosis and you are metabolically flexible you will be able to get back into ketosis as fast as a teenager in his or her prime. Thanks for sharing! That's a great point!
@@lmusima3275what you say is just not true. Ketogenic diets, for at least part of the year, were fairly normal. Seasonal high fat foods like meats, cheese, and butter were necessary to provide energy to stay alive. Besides, the only real way to burn fat for energy is in a ketonic state. Seriously, if you're carb loaded, you will just burn carbs. It's that simple. The cellular machinery, enzymes and mitochondrial structure are primed to burn carbs. If you only always have carbs around, well, it's really unlikely that loosing weight is for you.
Great analysis. Specialists in Nutrition miss the mark in catching up with new information. Thanks for this heads up to them and to brief us on the tools to use when taking to these specialists at home.
lol, it works so well that father of keto dr atkins died 72 yr old weighing 117 kg with history of heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension(all known results of keto diet)
Atkins died of a head injury after a slip and fall. Most people who go on keto see dramatic improvements in their blood work on all markers of health, including blood lipids. Besides that, people who knew Atkins well said that while he knew the science and effectiveness of the diet, he didn’t follow it himself all the time - which is the case with most diets and most people. That’s certainly my case. I use it as a tool, not a lifestyle. I do it every couple of years, a few months at a time, just get into the shape I need to. @avlovsky
As a layman who just wants to improve my health, and worked a career with my mind, I find it VERY frustrating how much self-interested disinformation is out there re the diet wars. Too many people selling products, books, courses, etc. and are FAR from objective, while they claim the problem is all 'X', and ONLY THEIR method / diet / whatever "works". It's often almost as sad and laughable as listening to political pundits of whatever stripe talk about "science" to support their politics. That's why I so much appreciate you doing research (reading study results, etc) and providing meaningful DATA to back the principles you share. I respect you being a doctor. I respect you MORE for acting like a scientist when teaching on the internet.
I've been on keto for a year now. My husband was heavily overweight and decided to try a keto diet, and I decided to try it with him. I am 60, female, and I wasn't overweight, but keto has been one of the best decisions in my life. I feel great, full of energy, healthy and my blood tests are great. Maybe it is not a diet for everyone's but for me is worth it.
An odyssey for the perfect diet is a odyssey into your self your routines and what makes your body operate well. I do a paleo diet with intermittent fasting and it seems to work for my body and workout routine. But obviously people vary and opinions but as long as you get routine health screenings and are benefitting that’s the best way I think. You have to experiment some to find a happy medium and don’t over indulge, healthy living is a life long challenge.
My first guess regarding the intestinal discomfort would be that the people experiencing this 1. only experience this initially 2. they are eating lots of keto treats tha do cause lots of gas. In my experience, I basically stopped all stomach aches and gas once I adopted low carb/keto AND only when I eat keto treats with erythritol do I get gas for a few hours.
Those sugar alcohols in diet candy & sugarfree gum are Lethal...well maybe just lethal for people around you. Gas like crazy, then diarrhea all night. It you have more than like three pieces.
A ketogenic diet is one where the individual will sustain ketosis. The specific macros are dependent on the individual. The max number of carbs is irrelevant if the subjects of the study aren’t testing keystone levels. This is where the train goes off the tracks. No key-tone production? No ketogenic diet.
Few more questions ( or may be suggestion for further investigation in which you are so great): 1) Can a positive effect of ketones in blood on chances of dementia be considered proven? 2) Ketones in the blood while on keto diet is a survival mode of functioning, correct?. Is is it sustainable for an organism to live in survival mode for extended period of time? A3) nd more general question which I debate with my soon-to-be-a-physician daughter: both keto dieting and intermittent fasting are pressure (limitations) on psychology (I know from my experience it is). Survival instinct dictates to resist to any changes / limitations. For example by increasing appetite even binging during feeding window. Can benefits of both keto diet and intermittent fasting be disavowed by these effects?
2. The whole point of fat is to store energy for a rainy day. Ketones is what's doing that. Yes, you could do that as long as you have fat stored. But you should do that in consultation with a doctor. 3. Intermitting fasting decreases apitite, leading to a person not want to binge eat. But sure, you could still do it and you would have no weight loss
I am wondering, too, about the effect of stress on the metabolism--here, the stress of starvation, which is what keto is. What are the long-term effects of keto or calorie restriction on the brain and the metabolism. Losing weight isn't the bigger problem; gaining it back is (though I can't lose weight now, either).
I realized that lately a lot of your videos feel like infomercials for the insider club. This one was so straightforward and nice, it made me remember why I subscribed in the first place.

A scientist here and also interested in these topics because tired of autoimmune diseases, inflammation, pain, and the useless advice of my health care professionals. They blame everything on aging as if that must be only reason for anomalies and poor health issues. Its pathetic and insulting. Not to mention a woefully inadequate explanation for most health ailments. The percentage of obesity and increase in diabetes and prediabetic conditions among children in addition to adults can't be explained simply by aging alone as children are children!!! It's what's in our food and how we eat. I do intermittent fasting to help keep my weight in check. It works very well to do that. I'm currently on carnivore simply because I am desperate to reduce and hopefully eliminate many of my health concerns. It's a challenge. But, I'm over a month in and feel better. Still dealing with fatigue, but carb and sugar cravings are minimal. When I eat the "standard diet" I feel terrible. And the vegan diet rips my stomach up. I've seen some skin issues start to clear up and have a lot less aches and pains in my joints and back. I've lost weight and some actual fat. Weight isn't my primary focus now. I'm trying to heal my weakened immune system.
What I don't get is everyone is like I lost 60lbs on keto and all ailments were cured. Sure, you were obese so no wonder losing 60lbs helped. If I lost 60lbs I'd be dead as I weigh 159lbs. So many overweight people think keto is a miracle, 85+ it is not you've just been able to lose weight and stuck to the diet as it has some heavy restrictive elements.
@9:45 Re Ketosis: Given that Apo.B-100 in non-HDL cholesterol has been shown to cause atherosclerosis, and saturated fat causes production of non-HDL cholesterol, minimizing consumption of saturated fat is key. I force my body to produce ketones so I appear more neurotypical and have better contol of hyperfocussed, locked in states. To reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, the least harmful approach seems to be to get fats from seeds, nuts and vegetable oils low in saturated fat. This leaves room for vegetables and berries to be consumed without protein or net carbs hitting quantities that shut down ketone production.
Personally I'm more concerned about protein RDA's being wholly inadequate. I'm post menopause and my body responds better with higher protein (120-150g) low carb, with unsaturated fats, and extended fasts diet rather than IF. But that's the thing, different, age, sex, hormones and health all impact on what works for us. As an academic paper nerd too 😆, it's all about the science for me, and I loath those nutritionalists health "influencers" 🙄 and their "science isn't there" statements or worse the cherry picked poor quality data. I know myself, from trawling through it, many claims are just wrong. There is now a considerable amount of good data on low Carb diets. My recent rabbit hole is low carb effects on neurological and psychological benefits, which i find fascinating anywho another great video 👍.
I'm curious. Do you observe a calorie limit on your high-protein diet? I am a 59-year-old woman who has dieted her whole life--mostly calorie restriction and activity. I could always lose weight but would gain it again. Now my problem is that osteoarthritis restricts my ability to jog or walk in combination with calorie restriction. I tried keto for 10 weeks two years ago: 70% fat, 25% protein, 23g net carbs. I measured my blood for ketones every night 2 hours after my last meal. I was never in ketosis! Two or three times I hit 0.8, if I had walked a lot after dinner. Otherwise, I measured 0.3 or 0.4. I lost NO weight. None. I also didn't get enough fiber. I wonder if my metabolism has become super-reactive to all the false famines I have put it through for 52 of my 59 years. (I was a fat kid.) Being 100 pounds overweight is harmful to me. I have been lifting weights with a trainer for 5 months now and trying calorie restriction again. I am not losing weight. It's alarming. I would be the only fat person in the reeducation camp.
@@rtcommodore9354 Measuring your ketones 2 hours after your evening meal will give you a low ketone reading more often than not, especially if that meal was high in protein - as protein is insulinogenic with the peak being at 2-3 hours. The higher your insulin the lower your ketones..
@@rtcommodore9354 as a 56 Yr old female, my advice is go carnivore and eat enough meat every day that, if you were a cat, you would be purring like crazy. Do that for a month and see how you feel. No calorie or macro counting. Just eggs, fish, lots of good quality red meat. How you feel might convince you that protein is your friend at this age and you don't want other foods as much as you want a steak.
I did keto for a training block in the alps of my local state mountain range. I leaned up bigly, but the power for climbing mountains was woefully lacking. Aerobic only riding. Black coffee and bacon + eggs + avocado for breakfast was delicious though...
Ohh the dishonesty when they say “keto isn’t the only tool to lose weight” as if that’s a claim anyone is making. It’s A tool, that may work for you. That point in no way invalidates it’s potential efficacy.
Could have gone into more details regarding fiber. Lower structure, including lower fiber, increases GIP and reduces GLP-1. Fiber is helpful because it slows absorbtion in the early gut, which is where more GIP is produced, and GLP-1 is released later. So it produces a better hormone profile. Interestingly, it's not just the content, but structure. If you blend up ingredients, but still eat them, the particles are smaller, and more readily absorbed early, resulting in a higher GIP response. Similar, take a potato. Raw, baked, mashed. Each will have an increasing GIP response.
I don't think that will make a difference for potatoes because you chew them up in your mouth...but there could be a big difference between whole grain flour vs bulgur and barley
6:20 I've been on a moderate ketogenic diet for +6 years and it did become sustainable with enough time along with 16-20h IF. I just can't eat carbs, way too many food intolerances intolerances and IBS, and I've never been better in my life, so I would say it isn't true that we need carbs when you ingest enough dietary fiber. I went down to 51kg and have stayed there for a while now, didn't start the diet for weight loss but I can add fats or proteins as I see fit for when I need extra energy or when I need extra fat to deal with the colder months.
This channel provides a perspective that is very valuable and unusual. Nicolas goes with the science. His relentless focus on data instills trust. And that’s the case even when the conclusions are complicated instead of headline-y. With gratitude, 🙏🏽
Sensible food choices and portions control is everything. A shorter eating window in a day will also help. The type of diets we practice is not the primary concern.
The only thing that has ever worked for me is low-carb. Maybe I'm keto, I don't obsess. I eat Beef, eggs, kefir, mackerel, mussels, chia seeds, some salt and spices. I've stuck at a BMI of 25 on this diet (down from 36) for 4 months, since starting to eat this way. I wake with energy and feel good all day. When it comes to nutrition, I think the best thing we can do is find what works, and do that for as long as it is working. So far so good with this diet for me.
Love the dissection of all the claims especially with more indepth molecular insights eg GLUT5 receptors, the difference weight loss can make to LDL levels with regards to fat consumption and the fat:muscle ratio. Those are things missing in most other people's youtube videos. The other thing I would add is that if you have Familial hypercholesterolemia, one should consider an alternative diet to Keto and maybe do a more protein-based (especially plant-based) + high fiber diet with only some poly/monounsat fats and more flavonol-rich veggies. Those folks can have very high lipidemia by being on keto even if they are not very big.
That may be why I gravitated away from high fat in general, instinctively. Grandfather was on a high animal fat diet and has a heart assistance machine. Dad was also on a high-animal fat diet, until he developed lipomas. If i go beyond a certain dietary fat threshold, I have endless diarrhea.
I like these dietitian debunk videos, but after reading the comments, this leads to putting ALL dietitians in one group (inductive reasoning). Just as there are quack MDs all over you tube (especially about nutrition), it doesn’t mean ALL MDs are quacks.
I use to alternate between: cramps, ga, diarreha and constipation; since I stopped eating veggies, grain and sugar everything went away since I eat only animal product and no fiber at all.
Thank u! Who would be your favorite research scientist then? Dr layne Norton? Dr David Sinclair? Dr Andrew Huberman? About science and health and fat loss etc :)
As you are able to take on these hot topics here's one for you that is very current the debate between NMN and NR supplements which is better, or are they as good as each other, I would be very interested in hearing your take on it, 😊
Keto for over 5 years now. I'm 6'2", I was obese and miserable my whole life. In the first year, I went from 315 lbs to 165 lbs, and I've maintained my weight ever since. Perfect blood panels. Yes, elevated LDL, but also much higher HDL, up to 70 from 32. There is quite a bit of debate on LDL from all sides, so it's not something I'm worried about. I would much rather choose my life now than my life then, and it's a shame dietitians spread misinformation to scare people away from experiencing this.
"Keto" is merely a tool that can help in weight loss, but it's *not* a healthy diet long term. The brain needs 1/3 of it's energy from glucose, which means the body will have elevated cortisol levels (with it's corrosponding negative health effects) for it's role in glucose homeostasis and -neogenesis. One of if not the worst "health"-diets in terms of all-cause mortality also.
@@Sundara229 Thank you for commenting with your subjective opinions, even if they run counter to my reality, my perfect health, and the years of research that I've done. 👍
@@GiveMeCoffee This video is talking about weight loss on a ketogenic diet, I'm talking about long term dieting. I even said that keto can be a tool that helps in doing so. So what are you even talking about?
I'm in my 70's. Going keto/low carb triggered a number of changes. 1) my high blood pressure dropped significantly. 2) my gum disease vanished 3) my fatty liver disease vanished. - and my physical energy greatly improved and this in particular is quickly reversible if I make the mistake of eating vegan or high carbs as I can barely stay awake at 2pm. I'm sticking with the bacon and eggs.
I really hate dieticians who haven't swim both sea and understand the shallowness and density of both. Especially, those who doesn't do workout or ever do a competitive sports. Theory/Study vs Experience/Study is a huge difference.
Also Keto diet does NOT reduce intake of legumes, instead it is advised to eat enough fiber and subsitute as much as possible saturated fat with unsaturated fat (fish, nuts, seeds, olive oil).
What about uncoupling Mitochondria? Dr Gundry wrote a new book Keto Code where he says we need to experience Ketosis for all the benefits. He also says we need fiber and certain types of carbohydrates that you can eat and still get into Ketosis. I find it very interesting that all of the good things that happen in the gut and our mitochondria provide very important benefits to our wellness. Is IF and diet the answer? Is how we manipulate our diet the answer to health and longevity? Dr Gundry describes a person who eats Keto and loses weight. The guy feels great, however, Dr Gundry says he is like the guy on the cover of the book: JAWS. He is swimming in the water but has no idea that right underneath the water below there is a Great White Shark about to eat him.
A couple of things, one thing is that when you juice fruits and vegetables you aren't removing ALL of the fiber, there's still some fiber in it although you are removing a LOT of the fiber which isn't really a great thing IMO but you can still have a little pulp in the juice depending on the quality of your juicer. I'm just pointing that out, it doesn't really change anything, just a clarification. The second thing is I have a question, do you know what determines or influences how much glut-5 you have in your gut? Thanks, interesting video.
I was kind of surprised. The dietician noted that the elimination of carbohydrates is bad. I've read in several books dealing with nutrition and diet that the body doesn't even need carbohydrates. There are ancient cultures that largely sustain themselves on animals. There's not a lot of grain growing in the Arctic, for example. Mr. Physionic didn't counter this and I wonder what his opinion is.
For me eating much lower carb/keto makes me feel a lot better GI ways as well as just less hungry ALL the time on a “normal” diet or even a “balanced” diet constructed by a dietitian.
I think in the weight issue, there are a lot of people who put in the same category the: I need to lose 3 to 5 Kg to be at my ideal weight with the... I gained 40 kg. Most probably, the 3 to 5 kg will only matter in the mind of the person worrying. The 40+ extra kg will have much more detrimental effects
Why in your comment section i always see people who are not really into science if you know what i mean... It seems like u make high quality content, you definitely deserve more good attention
The problem with applying the scientific method to diet is that humans lifestyles are so different it's not possible to control for .ore than a handful of variables. That's why the conflicting studies keep coming out. There's a lot of egg (yolkless or not) on researchers faces in this area.
It's so alien and bizarre to me how we got to a point where "processed foods" automatically means "high on calories". I have a lot of highly processed foods in my diet that are low on calories and are great when it comes to nutrition. There are even foods that have been processed for that goal. One of my favorite meals is a low-fat quark covered with a zero-calorie sweet syrup. I eat it as icecream. It's 1 pound for 300 calories and 55g protein and so satiating that it lasts me several several hours.
@Physionic, thank you for clarifying and debunking the incorrect information. In terms of fiber preventing nutirent / molecule absorbtion, does this have any effects on calorie intake? Does the body already know how many calories we ingested? In the example of fructose not being absorbed, do we excrete the undigested fructose, meaning the calories it has are not accounted for? Would you please help understand.
Diego, that’s a great question. You’re exactly right - if the nutrient does not pass the intestines into the blood stream, the calories are not counted. In the real world, this is such a small percentage, it’s negligible. Great question, again!
A person can follow a ketogenic diet and gain weight if they are eating processed, unhealthy foods. It looks like when you break the metabolic cycle, the fallout shows up in the form of retained fat. There' "dirty keto" and "clean keto" and the person being debunked didn't specify because while they are both keto, the results are very different. Intermittent fasting will also fail if processed, sugary foods are eaten during the feeding window. It negates any positive effects from IF. From a layperson's perspective, it seems like the culprit that keeps people from being able to lose fat is eating fake food. So step one should be to eliminate the junk. Step two should be intermittent fasting to improve metabolic response. Step three is to choose a diet that works for your body and health conditions. Some people go vegan or vegetarian, others go carnivore, while those with type 2 diabetes go with the ketogenic diet. Seems like the underpinning should always be to choose whole foods and to allow time without food each day, only water. That's just my take on it. I used to weight over 300lbs but I'm down to 175lbs, and the scale doesn't lie. I never took any weight loss drugs or bought any diet plans or wasted money on gym memberships. I just decided to eat consciously and I read food labels like the Amish read the bible. :)
I’m learning that dietitians have a curriculum I guess you could say much like doctors. They’re all learning the same crap low fat lots of grains. And it’s interesting because they’re all young people like they have not been around people who are in their 40s 50s 60s and more that have gained weight and gotten sick on the standard American diet they push, or have experienced it themselves. I love to watch videos where people have woke up. I think Dr. Berry did one with a nutritionist dietitian who learned the wrong way and then realized it and found her way back to reality. The biggest problem I have is how they even consider that many carbohydrates for diabetics. If 1 g of glucose is produced by what you eat and sets off your insulin we have a problem.
Well, it doesn't help that their entire field of study and ruling organization was created by vegeterian Seventh-day Adventists in concert with John Harvey Kellogg, also a Seventh-day Adventist, who created corn flakes to pump lots of grains into children and teens to eradicate the sex drive for religious regions.
They do NOT push the standard American diet. Which btw, SAD is very fat heavy in case you didn't notice. Look up how much fat there is in a cheeseburger and fries, or a pizza.
So you think dietitians and doctors are all full of crap? I don't think they are Gods for your info but they certainly are better than you ordinary we'd surfers out there. Guess it is true that they say. So only the theories that conform to our own beliefs can possibly be true! Get real man.
Physionic, I think you misquoted the dietician who talked about keto raising LDL. She didn't say keto caused heart issues, she said it often raised LDL. High cholesterol is not a disease, and not the same as heart disease. I wish you would dive into the latest research on the association of LDL with heart disease.
But any of this diet stuff seems hard b/c people are so different and most advice probably doesn't apply to everyone. And its so variable as far as the foods you combine, the time you eat, your health at that moment, etc..
You frequently talk about cholesterol. I am pretty new here and studying statins since they came out. I assume you have looked at them pretty hard. How do I find those presentations? Overall I have found that, after the statins were launched by the sophmoric technique of using percentages to exaggerate low absolute numbers of people who benefitted, their NNTs continue to be way high. I have met doctors who say "I dont look at NNTs" - part of the statin cult. Thanks
Nicolas, could you delve into why cholesterol has been with us since the dawn of mankind but the crap produced as food mowadays causes the endothelial layers to open and require cholesterol to initially plug the gap. Eating a diet that mimises the endothelial disruption would stop the plaques forming in the first place and keep even high levels of cholesterol moving around the blood stream and cells as it should, in short the health issues from saturated fat and raised chloesterol are issues because people in those studies also ate food that cause endothelial disruption and leaking gut issues so food companies can keep their product on the shelf for longer.
The part that irritated me about that video was that she said we need carbs. We have zero requirements for carbs in fact. I can't wait for that lie to die.
We don't technically need them, but the body & brain do use glucose and lots of it (no matter how 'fat adapted' someone is) - gluconeogenesis is an expensive and inefficient process. Way easier to just eat the carbs that you need, but get them from the right sources
This is the second of your videos with nutritionists. Good work. But the nutritionists speak of vegetables. Is there research saying vegetables are actually required for good health??
No one should be prejudiced against -- or marginalize -- overweight people, any more than they should be bigoted against any other group of people. But when I see commercials that are practically celebrating obesity for the sake of political correctness, I just wonder if the world hasn't gone mad.
Dang. Keto dont work? Wish i knew this in 2018. I wouldnt have gone and lost 70 lbs doing it. Shoot. I shoulda just stayed fat. Ill go-ahead and gain all that back now that i know.
The "conventional wisdom" concerning LDL cholesterol is that there are two types: (1) Small and dense (sd), (2) large and "fluffy" (lf). Supposedly, sd is the type formed when eating the Standard American Diet. lf is formed when fasting, intermittent fasting, or when doing keto. sd supposedly causes plaques and inflammation. lf is supposedly protective. I freely admit I don't know what the truth is, but it seems to me that, with the keto diet becoming mainstream, if it causes an increase in sd (and sd is harmful as reported), there should be a massive increase in heart disease in this country. Surely, if that were so, the "plant based" people would be shouting about it from their batty belfries. Crickets.
I hate people who say BMI is inaccurate and use examples of vary healthy professional athletes with high BMIs. Excuse me, but what percentage of the public trying to lose weight are professional athletes? And yes, those who are overweight or lower end of obese who exercise five hours a week are healthier than those of high BMI who are couch potatoes, again, what percentage of obese people get five hours of exercise weekly on a consistent basis? And are they statistically healthier than those of normal BMI with the same amount of consistent exercise?
When you say "losing weight" makes you healthier, is that really true of a person who, for example, is muscular and has 10% adipose tissue, and therefore would be losing muscle as well to lose "weight"? You said "lose weight" not "lose fat", so are we to understand that having less muscle is also healthier? I find that a bit hard to parse.... surely this should be more contextual. What if you're a malnourished prisoner and you're losing muscle due to low protein intake, etc. What if "losing weight" means that you're losing bone density - is that also healthy for you? Also, if you're lean and you "pick up weight" by adding bone and muscle, does that then imply that what you're doing is unhealthy for you?
Not a painting, but a picture taken. I got the actual image from an acquaintance of mine - she took the picture, I loved it, so I asked for the original to blow up into a canvas. It's Paris.
I add C8 MCT-oil and ketones (acetone) to my energy shake that I drink when I wake up at night. That way I can be in ketosis and still eat carbohydrates to prevent my sugers from getting low.
One of my workmates ended up eating so called low colestrial foods wholegrain bread banana. Cereals and starchy veg To be fair he didnt eat sweets drink alchol. Meat he gave up although he did not eat much of it. He was skinny fat. One day he phoned and said im in hospital had a heart attack and have had stent. He had low cholesterol. So I ditched all the healthy heart carbs and startch and carb. He was seeing a dietician. Nicolas thankyou for these timely videos.
Does anybody really claim that BMI is all telling? I don't think so. Highly muscular people can have very high BMI but be very healthy. She is overweight. We know that how? By her clothing which does not adequately hide her fat, not muscular, arms.
KETO for 9 months made me lose 12 kilo. Have since gone low carb/intermittent fasting for many years now and the weight is so stable! Went a bit "ballistic" on carbs for a few months and gained 4 kilo. Now it is KETO for a short time until those kilos are gone. Maybe 2 months and it is back to "maintenance" again! 😂😂 I am quite fed up with these self appointed "experts" that is spreading all kinds of BS on health. I am 72 and compared to others in the group of 60+ years, I am an athlete! 🤣🤣
"...marginalises people in bigger bodies..." What a joke. She is just making an excuse for herself. If she ate less she wouldn't be a person in a '..bigger body...". People choose for themselves what size body they will be 'in".
Maybe it is or maybe it isn't. But low carb is easier to do than counting calories from random food sources. It doesn't leave you hungry all the time, and it doesn't slow metabolism. I'm not your buddy.
"ketards decreased ldl from 125 to 113" doesn't break her claim of ketards having too high cholesterol, because ldl 113 is still too high. show me ketards with ldl 70 or less. you can't, so she is right
High carb diets are very inflammatory to the body. Inflammation is the root cause of so many diseases and also high insulin levels which are harmful to good cell health. How can one expect to have a strong immune system when the body is fighting the inflammation caused by a poor American food diet. My diabetes is a result of high insulin levels to which my cells have become insulin resistant. The medical field seems to be more interested in treating symptoms rather than the disease. High blood sugar is a symptom. The disease is insulin resistance. The focus is on high blood sugar. The cause is high insulin levels . Heart disease is very similar because the focus is on cholesterol when it should be on the calcification caused by high insulin levels. Plaquing of the arteries is what the cholesterol sticks to and causes the blockage. . So lets not look at the cause because ,well, there is no money in it. But if we can treat the symptoms and sell insulin and statins we will make a fortune. what a shame that Doctors are unwittingly dragged into this money making scheme .Most will not think outside the box until health issues happen to them.
How many of your “keto” studies were paid for by the meat and dairy industry? Because by last count, the number was at 65% of the studies were funded by the meat and dairy industry.

Later this week, I'll be posting a video on fasting and liver health. Stay tuned!
You are right and she is right regarding BMI not being the most reliable tool for evaluation of health. You could have someone with a BMI of 16 dying from cancer.
War om carbs!!!!!!!
No such thing as leaky gut
Hard to say anything meaningful about this without further knowledge. First thing that comes to mind is, what did you eat before? It's well probable, even highly likely, that your keto diet plus fasting was a lot healthier than what you used to eat. Thus we could compare one with the other. But it says nothing about if keto is a good or "the best" diet possible (and of course there are tons of different kinds of keto diets which differ from each other a lot; same is true for fasting).
But anyway, congrats on you finding a way to live a healthier life!
Leto and fasting do not fix type 2 diabetes and does not increase energy
However, loosing weight and get to a healthier weight, healthier diet plus exercise do fix both
@@HSLSFirst i literally did all of that with keto and fasting
@@HSLSFirstHow can you be so peremptory? This is one study among a lot:
Ketogenic Diet Benefits to Weight Loss, Glycemic Control, and Lipid Profiles in Overweight Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trails
Everyone says weight loss when what they really mean is fat loss. Nobody wants to lose lean mass, bone mass, or any other mass except for fat mass and cancerous masses. We should petition for using better language and not worry about peoples delicate sensibilities.
Unless you somehow got the physique of Ronnie Coleman and then later started caring about your long term health.
Not irrelevant.
Man that’s skinnier than a whippet.
Multiple studies show that LDL is very relevant
This is the typical narrative from those so-called specialists chiropractors we see on YT
LDL is not irrelevant. Also you lost 8cm on your waist. The loss of adipose tissue improved your markers and you became more insulin sensitive.
Yup keto doesn't work. Lost 114lbs in 11 months. Still waiting on the benefits 😆 🤣 😂
Damn dude
Keto and IF work so well that you can do them in a half-assed manner and still have great results.
lol, it works so well that father of keto dr atkins died 72 yr old weighing 117 kg with history of heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension(all known results of keto diet)

You're just outright lying
Look up the Korean Cholesterol Mortality Study published in 2019. Over 12 million subjects. Quite an eye opener.
Every "keto" processes food i ever looked at was def not keto. I stay away from processed foods in general.
Those sugar alcohols in diet candy & sugarfree gum are Lethal...well maybe just lethal for people around you. Gas like crazy, then diarrhea all night. It you have more than like three pieces.
I love your videos and your sense of humour, and great for giving us up to date actual facts❤
Kind of you, Linda - thank you. :)

A ketogenic diet is one where the individual will sustain ketosis. The specific macros are dependent on the individual. The max number of carbs is irrelevant if the subjects of the study aren’t testing keystone levels. This is where the train goes off the tracks. No key-tone production? No ketogenic diet.
Few more questions ( or may be suggestion for further investigation in which you are so great):
1) Can a positive effect of ketones in blood on chances of dementia be considered proven?
I love these questions especially the first about Ketones and dementia prevention/treatment… I do hope he addresses them!

I just love your videos! Thank you so much DR. for taking the time to share them with us!
He really is awesome! He's not a doctor yet but he's probably smarter than most :-)
Obsessed with all of your videos! Thank you for putting them together for all us who seek to know the science
This is the thing that frustrates me the most about various mainstream science communication when they attempt to bust myths.
How the body works; it lives a while and then dies
Whatever is not absorbed will result in diarrhea just like he said.
Love that series! Thank you ❤️

Well done!
Thanks, Talia. As always, love your input. And yes, agreed.

I love how you do not go for the kill, journalism, but try to give a science-based nuanced opinion.
So fiber prevents nutrient absorption? Doesn't that indicate that people will eat more due to nutrient need?

I’ve done the keto thing for two thirds of my 66 years. It works marvelously.
Why in your comment section i always see people who are not really into science if you know what i mean... It seems like u make high quality content, you definitely deserve more good attention
When i cut carbs i got chronic cortisol, do carbs back getting fat day by day as endomorph, you know glycogen is gold fór muscles.
The problem with applying the scientific method to diet is that humans lifestyles are so different it's not possible to control for .ore than a handful of variables. That's why the conflicting studies keep coming out. There's a lot of egg (yolkless or not) on researchers faces in this area.

Nutritionist #3 makes me laugh, b/c I have a rule about not taking nutrition advice from fat people.
Science is science. A bookor computer or phone have no muscle mass, will you ignore the health information from them?
Well done.
the main problem with bmi is that it punishes people for growing muscles. weight isn't bad. visceral fat is bad
True
It kills me when people say , »that’s just water weight » especially when people lose over 20 lbs !
The standard American diet is mickey d's, kfc and Applebee's...not chickpeas kale and olive oil with broiled salmon. Get real
So you think dietitians and doctors are all full of crap? I don't think they are Gods for your info but they certainly are better than you ordinary we'd surfers out there. Guess it is true that they say. So only the theories that conform to our own beliefs can possibly be true! Get real man.
Tremendous video ! Thank You ! Looking forward to a video on magnesium. 🥜🥜🐟🐟 🥬🥬💊💊
I doubt. Search for anti-nutrients in what we believe are healthy. Also most veggies are sprayed with pesticides.
Apart from the great content (as usual), I think you look good in booth videos and get across the "sexy nerd" aspect very well. So no worries 😉
Ha! Thank you, Dr. Koch!
Crickets.

It helps you’re not 'just a guy on internet'
Thanks, Fahad. :)
A great point, Jennifer. No, only if a person is overweight.
It worked for me. But maybe it's not for everyone.
Nick, what is the painting behind you on the wall? Its a little dark to me and I cant make it out clearly? Who painted it? 🙂
Not a painting, but a picture taken. I got the actual image from an acquaintance of mine - she took the picture, I loved it, so I asked for the original to blow up into a canvas. It's Paris.
i am pretty sure that the juice cleanse does not have more fructose than a coca cola. and jugging down 1l of coca cola does not result in diarrhea.
keto is almost impossible for vegetarians, and fasting should not be more than 48 hours unless overweight or in late stage cancer.
Isn't it "weight" or body fat, that's unhealthy? Certainly a higher weight due to more muscle and bone mass would be a good thing healthwise.
thank you for doing this! did you have a video on that 100 studies research on keto if yours you mentioned?

Sure thing, here it is ^
Its almost like eating in modertaion > "diets"
I add C8 MCT-oil and ketones (acetone) to my energy shake that I drink when I wake up at night. That way I can be in ketosis and still eat carbohydrates to prevent my sugers from getting low.
One of my workmates
ended up eating so called low colestrial foods wholegrain bread banana.
The BMI is a general guide. Of course body builders will have higher BMIs. That's not rocket science.
I though blenders do not destroy fiber ?
Fiber is not essential at all. Read the book "Fiber Menace".
No. I only read studies. I don’t care about how someone else interprets studies - give me studies or nothing.
Aaand then there’s Abbey Sharp 🤦🏻♀️
Shame no one can think of anything new to post and they have to beat these topics into oblivion.
Good.
How many of your “keto” studies were paid for by the meat and dairy industry? Because by last count, the number was at 65% of the studies were funded by the meat and dairy industry.
Did the other 35% disagree with the results of the 65%?
Funding was mixed - results were consistent.
