Written Approx second half of 1971.
(According to a recent post that included information from a web site called songfacts, says Gary and Ronnie wrote this about Ronnie's Grandmother dying and Gary's Mother that had just died. FAKE NEWS.
Though It is true one of Roninie's Grandmother died around the same time as writing it. Gary says it was about their Mothers.)

Gary tells the story of writing Simple Man in a 1987 radio interview, He tells us it is about their Mothers, And that Ronnie had just gone through a sad time with a divorce with the mother of his daughter. Gary was leaving Home and his input to the song was advive his mother had given him.
In a 1976 interview Ronnie tells us , the lyrics for Simple Man Came to him in the Shower.
“I’ve had a lot of ’em come to me in the shower,” he said, going on to add,
“I wrote the song ‘Simple Man’ in the shower.“
