I think repros are good, especially for those of us that want a physical version of a game that we know that we can't afford. Also, I like them for games that never came out here in my country and fan translations.

Although , i know faker games happen , i also must say that some people won't be able to experience a lot of older games unless more companies begin to do this. So i firmly endorse repros and actually buy them if they are cheaper. All in all I'm ok as long as the seller lists it as a repro-cart on the back. Not in the label though lol not mah artwork!

You're not doing the original creators of the game (ie. Nintendo and Enix) if you buy a legit version for $200. 100% of those proceeds go to the reseller. Fine if you're only collecting originals, but if you just wanna play it on physical hardware, I'm cool with it.

It's cool to have a cheap option for those $200 games that won't break the bank so I can focus on the stuff I really want and buy current stuff as well that will help devs.

Ding. The ONLY time repro carts are bad is when people try to pass them off as original and sell them at absurd prices, or when they make repros by cannibalizing other legit games, like what we see with Batman: Return of the Joker being used for Mr. Gimmick repos.

Same! Pretty happy to find out these exist. It’s so nice to have an option to get these old games without having to sell an arm and a leg for them. It doesn’t surprise me that people are miffed about these, probably the same people that are against emulation. I really don’t understand their logic. “Oh you’re stealing from the developers!”. Here’s the thing though, no matter how you obtain these games, emulating, buying reproduction carts, or building them second hand from game stores, in the end the devs get nothing. If anything by their logic, wouldn’t it be much worse to buy an lusciously overpriced old game, since someone is making a massive profit and the devs get none of it

    • @SwankeyMonkey

Yeah, I kinda do the same.
But as a collector purist, that makes me feel bad that I am taking that low value sports title off the market (which someone might be looking for) just so I can replace a cracked/worn case.
I've seen companies go into making replacement cases for other market fields, so I always hoped that some company would discover that game cases was an open market to make good profit. Everyone would win.

One could also say the same about the used game market (both current and retro) where a publisher/developer does not see a dime beyond the initial sale. The only difference between a downloaded rom, a repro cart or a used game is that one of the three is 'morally right'. From a pure business perspective all three are one and the same.

    • @-dash
      @-dash 6 лет назад +2

SZU Gaming i have no moral dilemma in either of those 3. like you said the developer doesnt see a dime past the initial sale, so how is it stealing? just because there is a law against something doesnt necessarily mean that its morally wrong. ie jaywalking or extortion. wait, extortion is wrong. and jaywalking endangers drivers. and the virtual console exists. 🤔

I love repro boxes! My whole N64 and genesis collections are housed in repros now. I like that I can buy plastic cases for games that came in cardboard. I wouldn't call myself a collector. I fit in the group you classified as people who just want to play the games, so i prefer an inexpensive repro, digital, or multicart over some out of print expensive original. Its cool to own something rare and valuable, but the people getting upset about repros are the ones who seem to be looking for self worth and confidence from their collection, which is a whole nother topic.

Hundred of dollars? They should be $1.00-$5.00 because they're old games. Whoever charged this much must be mentally retarded.

    • @Pretz_Starwind
      @Pretz_Starwind 5 лет назад +1

@@The_Husband_of_Jane_Lane This is a logically thought process that I can slightly agree with but we have such a collectible mindset in the market that it's not as easy as saying they are older games they should cost less. The original company put out only so many carts back in the day it was still new. They REFUSE to put out more carts, but will put out downloadable versions on the virtual console for some games and some systems. Therefore when buying a used game, say for SNES, you are buying something that isn't made anymore and the market has a mindset that rarity increases the value no matter what. Now I for one am a fan of emulation in the fact that I can play and enjoy the games I use to own and sold, use to rent but never got to own, and games I have never even heard of or had the chance to play/buy back in my youth. Now we also have the same issue with all other markets. Take the Car market for instance, a 1970 mustang by definition of age of materials and technology used in it should be a relatively cheap car, probably about 500-1500 depending on condition as you're looking at least to the value of the scrap metal you can haul it off for. However in many different conditions this car can still go as high as 30,000 or more depending on mileage on the engine, part numbers matching all original parts, and place you are selling it at. For the same price you can buy a brand new vehicle for, you can own a car from 1970 that is used, it has been maintained well but has been driven around for X amount of miles and been exposed to all the weather over that full nearly 50 years. The term "classic" being attached to something seems to instantly trigger a meaningful jump in it's worth. A Classic Honda Civic from say 1985 could fetch nearly 10k or more in good condition, simply cause it's considered a "classic".
Now when people talk about "Collecting Games" I find that you are basically buying a game and meaning to not play it to keep it in pristine condition in order to sell it again at a later date when the value has increased. Now the rest of the collectors also fall into sub categories of collectors who enjoy games and collectors who enjoy the market of games, as well as the more snooty type of collector who only wants to show off their collection of games. I personally have no problem with the first cause they play the games and find the joy they were intended for. The rest are all about the money and "prestige" of it all and they are why the market is a high as it is in many cases.

As almost everyone in the comments are saying, I am 100% fine with repros,
    as long as they are
    A. Labeled as a repro and not passed off as legit
    B. Function as intended
And C. aren't over priced or priced higher than a legit copy
They get an A in my book

  • @shoot_the_glass5654

One thing to consider if you buy repro. You get a brand new cartridge, with modern components. Some repro copies use flash chips instead of CMOS like the originals.

  • @Pretz_Starwind
    @Pretz_Starwind 5 лет назад +2

I like the Reproduction idea as it's helpful in a few areas:
1: no permanent black sharpie on the case with someone's name
2: should be with a new battery or other way to save so not worried about a 20+ year old battery dying and erasing your save
3: Cover sticker SHOULD be nice and new but can be half assed and not really authentic image
4: better pricing for just the game as opposed to a collector's price for something you want to play and not just put on the shelf to look at and then sell at a later date for more than you spent
5: access to games we never got over here in the US and missed out on the original story and look.
6: getting the feel of playing the game off the cartridge and system like the original was designed for and not just emulated on the PC
Now I do love gaming and I'm very fond of retro games that I played growing up. There are hundreds I haven't played and would like the chance to play. However there is a bit of a difference in playing on PC via emulation and playing on the console. Much like there's a difference in holding the book or manga in your hand and reading it, or looking at the screen and reading a digital copy of it. Not to mention just the simple fact that retro gaming has been a growing trend and the current console gaming companies have yet to do anything besides put out the "Classic" mini versions of their old consoles with only a handful of games loaded on them, which is just someone making an emulator system with pre-loaded games on it's HDD and selling it under licensed trademark.
A reproduction cart can be a marketing switch that if the official companies picked up on and put out their own reproductions would mean a full revival of retro gaming instead of current fight between collectors and yard sales that the current market is represented by.

  • @TXFDA

So, as long as a Repro has SOME minor change from a real cart, I'm fine with it. And when it comes to repros of prototype games, betas, and rom hacks, go ahead and do whatever.
But here's a thing to consider. Websites that sell reproductions of rom hacks. It's not really as big of a market compared to repros of real games that people don't wanna spend $50+ on. But it's a thing. There used to be a website/company called Timewalk games. They made super high quality products. Their major focal point was selling reproduction carts of rom hacks (usually complete with custom made boxes, manuals, and sometimes even a small mini poster and map).
Sounds great, right? Yeah. Except they didn't always get permission from a hack creator before selling it. I remember there was this big deal one time because they were selling a hack (I think it was of Punch Out on NES?), and they didn't get permission from the guy that made it. They did at least give the guy credit on the store page. Then, supposedly, when he asked them to take it down, they straight up erased his credit from the store page, and kept selling it anyway. Like, what kinda bullshit is that? And naturally, it's a hack of a Nintendo game, it's not like the hack-creator could take 'em to court over it or anything.
(There was another issue of Timewalk stealing art off of Deviantart for their manuals too. I was actually the one that informed an artist on DA about it. I asked him if he knew Timewalk was using his art, and his answer? "No, I'll have to look into it." Timewalk closed pretty soon after. Gotta wonder if that had anything to do with it...)

I kind of wish you covered a little bit more of the risks of repros. You know, like how some games put in a bunch of stuff to screw with the game if it is a repro. Like making the game way too difficult, making things incompletable, or just straight up not working at all. There is a factor of this in earthbound, which is why it can't really be reproduced. If you try playing on a reproduction cartridge, the game will spawn in a TON of more enemies, making traversing a lot more difficult, hindering gameplay and overall ruining the experience of the game. There's a similar thing with Megaman X. And as far as I know, there isn't really something that just tells you "This game does this if it's being played via reproduction" which is why I tend to avoid reproduction carts. They can be good for games that are absurdly priced, but only as long as they play exactly 1 to 1 to the original. Unless it's modded version of a game that fixes or adds something (translations, more stuff, etc.)

So I'm strongly considering buying a reproduction copy. I just want it to be the same quality GAME PLAY WISE as the original.
I never got to play chrono trigger and I don't want my first time playing it to be ruined by issues someone who played the original when it first came out wouldn't be plagued with.
Reproductions aren't badly translated fan made copies of games are they? Thats the impression I get when someone says reproduction.

I bought the Sailor Moon RPG on SNES and it really doesn't run right because the fans who made the translation did not know what they were doing with the font choice and it wont show up on screen right on a 'real' SNES. Also, totally right about labeling things as Repro's. I saw a Genesis Sailor Moon repro at MAGFest and was confused at first and had to ask what it was. Turns out that repro carts were all that they had.

I have a simple rule for repro carts, it has to have never existed. Zelda Outlands, something in english that was never released, all perfectly fine. The one exception is the 151 in 1 cart in my Neo Geo MVS Arcade. Those games really exists but the savings and convenience was way too much for me to ignore.

I agree. I don't really care about reproduction carts as long as they are clearly marked and clearly sold as repros. That said, I personally would much rather put any money I would spend on repros towards an authentic cartridge, but as far as what others do, I couldn't care less.

I'm American but I live in China. Most consoles don't get released here but the underground market is flooded with reproduction carts. It's almost impossible to buy the real stuff. However, it's pretty easy to get Famicom and Super Famicom games online. However, it's important to be VERY CAREFUL when shopping on their version of Amazon (called Taobao) because many shops try to pass off repros as the real deal. It can be tiring to try and figure out what's real and what isn't online but I've since become friends with some shop owners that only have legit stuff. However, it's really nice to be able to buy a repro copy of Alien Soldier or Little Sampson for dirt cheap. That and I'd rather get Famicom Disc system games as just famicom carts. But still, have to be incredibly careful here.

Is there anything i can do to get (at least some of...) my money back? Repros of this game typically sell for about $30 , meaning i got ripped off like $45. Looking for advice, thanks.

I think the only negative thing about reproduction cartridges is if someone tried to sell one as an original and ripped someone off...I think it's a great thing because it makes difficult to find games easier to obtain for someone who wants to play on the original hardware, it's also great for translating Japan only games.

Everybody here is worried about if "someone's gonna sell it off as original, collectional value blablabla" and no one seems to be worried about the fact that most (Genesis for example) cartridges use less power than the originals which causes more heat and might reduce the lifespan of the electronics of your console.
I'm considering buying repros, because I'm a collector, enjoy having a physical representation of the game, but can't afford crazy market prices... but I think I will play them on a clone console and save the life of my original console.

I'm all for repro carts if it's a game that wasn't normally available in my country. Like say, my PAL copy of Panorama Cotton or Duke Nukem 3D.
I do have a problem with how expensive games can be. Most sellers just want to make a small fortune if they think a game might be uncommon or just sought after. I see a copy of Super Mario Bros 3 for £112 on ebay right now. I guess because of the box being in good condition. Thats some expensive cardboard.

  • @tyisafk

Face it. Used copies of games that are rarer can cost hundreds, and the money doesn't even go to the devs/publishers. If I want to play Earthbound on SNES, I'd rather find a way to extract the VC version's ROM using homebrew on 3DS/WiiU, and make my own repo cart. That way, I paid Nintendo for the at a reasonable price, bought the hardware necessary to build my own cart, and all that would STILL cost less than getting a genuine cart from a stranger. Also if you don't want to make your own repo, buying one is still much more reasonable than a genuine cart. I admit it wouldn't feel as good playing a repo over a genuine cart. I've been there, but some games are just so damn overpriced.

Not to mention that the sales of those retro copies never go to diabetes research (one of the members of the dev. team has diabetes). But AtarisewAge likes to incite pirate copies since some of the members there hold grudges against the team, so screw them...

I think repos are inconvenient, because if I want to buy an authentic copy of aero fighters for snes I'm going to be thinking every one is a repro unless it is absurdly priced. How can I compare it to a real one if there are seemingly all reproductions on the market, for such an uncommon game. It would be a different story if everyone was transparent and said exactly what they are selling, but I guess that is too much to ask in the world of reproductions.

It's kinda Ironic. In the development phase, these games sit on test carts and electronic store compact discs before the master file is sent to a printing company. The developers want people to experience their art by interacting with the game. People only get butthurt when they overpay for something for the sake of bragging rights. Collecting in itself is a hobby that can be applied to anything and the more scarce the higher the value.
The question is -- are re-released games merely new forms of media, or bootlegs themselves?
