Geez Paul, it looks like a pretty strong colony in the back up against the trees. But seriously, thanks for all the great information you post. You are a go to for how to do in the north, Thanks from Central New Hampshire, US. Have a great fall and winter, Brice

2 Things. 1 I use a spray bottle and it acts like a smoker as well.I pull the frames one by one and spray both sides. Why does it only last a day or so though? Where does it go if the crystals don't evaporate off the bees? Just a simple mix of a table spoon or two per quart of just water and I think it works well. 2 Is that a bee keepers stack of boxes in the back ground or a bee keepers totem pole.😁

Totem Pole, or Bee Stack. 😄
Nice OA Discussion. My Treatment of Choice.
A very useful Varroa Mite Treatment. Especially, if you do several different types and methods of Varroa Reducing practices. Randy Oliver recommends doing a number of different ways each Bee Season. (Eg, Trickle, Strips, Vap, Trays, Cage, Splits, etc, etc ...
We need to outwit these darn Varroa. 👀
We must : Keep our Bees Healthy and Strong ! 😎
      🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
      Happy Beekeeping 2022.
      🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
      A Question :
Done a bit of Fact finding. (Still to ascertain.) Is a OA Trickle and Vaporisation using OA Crystal's classed as the Same thing ?
I've used OA Trickle, well here in Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Did this last Mid Winter, also earlier this year, with my Nucs. With other management/products too.
Have just purchased a Gas Vap : Lovely easy Gadget, using a Creme Brulee Torch ! (No leads, Car Batteries etc !) 🤭
Can I Trickle, now, and do a Vap in say Mid Dec ?
Or negate the Trickle, and Vap instead !?!
Gas Vap : will be lovely to use, knowing Scottish Winters are Cold, and I will not have to Pop those Hives Roofs off cosy Bees.
      Advise appreciated. 🙄
Plenty of OA Talk out there, on Ways to Do it.
But not anything on OA result... using the same Crystal's: Dissolved, then Vaped. Same or not ?🤔

Hi Paul, Has your department looked at other ways of applying Oxalic Acid? Single yearly application of Oxalic Acid is no longer wise. In New Zealand the use of "Staples", from Dry Wall tape (dull porous type) in three layers and Cardboard Staples is the method of application throughout the beekeeping year. OA Sponges are another. It would be very interesting if your department investigated, monitored the methods. Being a leading University with a bucketful of knowledge on bees, your opinion and the University would be most respected. Regards

      Hi D
I haven't heard of this method and don't know what the materials you mention are. Could you send me a picture pgkelly@uoguelph.ca
We haven't been recommending multiple applications of OA as it can be toxic to bees with repeat dosage.
Thanks for the tip to consider.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:21 🍵 *Oxalic acid, used as a miticide, is safe for bees and doesn't contaminate honey or comb.*
01:21 🐜 *Oxalic acid is applied to prevent mite resistance to synthetic miticides like apivar.*
02:23 🍯 *Oxalic acid helps clean up any mites left after initial treatments, preventing re-infestation in the fall.*
03:25 🌡️ *Applying oxalic acid on a cool day is effective as the bees are clustered, enhancing contact exposure.*
03:56 🧪 *Oxalic acid solution should be made fresh each day as it doesn't keep well, and beekeepers should follow regional guidelines for hive care.*

    Hi there,
if we have oxalic acid as a fluid(not crystals), 85% solution, how much should we add to the recipe?

    • @BulkyPen
      @BulkyPen Месяц назад

85%? What's the other 15%? Check or ask for the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). Or use the crystalline form, and also check that MSDS to make sure it's pure OA. It's used normally as a wood bleach, can buy it online, from hardware stores, amazon, loads of places. it's also not expensive. In these parts, a 5KG bucket is about $30
