It is absolutely NOT failing. but it is also not profitable. How can both of these facts be true?
SpaceX charges Starlink for launch services and for the satellites. No matter how much Starlink makes, SpaceX can always charge more money than what Starlink makes.
If the value that SpaceX charges Starlink is disputed, SpaceX can compare their cost to literally any other launch provider and justify their charges.

I bought into Starlink in October 2023. I NEEDED it!
Being mountain rural, I've had to endure Century Link high speed DSL at dial up speeds since 2006. No cell available either.
My property is at the furthest reach for the DSL repeater and dropped service all the time. Century Link didn't care. Still cost me $130/mth with landline. I've gone as long as over a month without internet during peak tourist (terrorist) season.
Yes, the upfront cost stung a bit. However, MY SANITY and homicidal ideations on random Lumen/ Century link execs is now abated.
I'm now in the modern tech era and am geeking out! Happy and at peace!
    Thank you Elon and Starlink!

just ran a speed test that includes Jitter. Results are
    76 mbps down
    15 mbps up
    26 ms ping
    5 ms JITTER !!!!!!
In eastern rural Texas Starlink is selling like hotcakes and and the customers are quite happy. The fact that it is stable (mainly low jitter) and the speeds are good enough for interactive video (zoom, google meetings, and such) allows reliable use for professional / work from home, use.
My wife is a US Patent attorney and has international clients. She works from a home office and Starlink has improved her situation tremendously, even though technically it is less throughput compared to what we had and discontinued, the fact that the QoS is better and reliable she can do more in less time and effort and even take on new client.
As the satellite consolation grows and improves it will only get better.
Not sure what these people mean by profitable, but I will tell you it is successful and will only get more so from every aspect.

I live in the mountains in Tennessee and sat internet is all we can get. I've had two other services both of which cost considerably more than Starlink and had very limited data and super slow speeds. Starlink is usually more than 10X faster and unlimited data is quite a bargain in comparison plus it has far fewer drop outs. Just my 2 cents worth

-cost of satellites fabrication and transport to the rocket
-cost to recuperation of the booster
-cost to refurbish and transport the booster
-cost to make the second stage (lost in each launch)
-cost to use and maintain all the ground stations
-cost of bandwith from others isps
-cost of permit and license in others countries plus vat taxes
-cost of general administration and assets depreciation

-cost of launch sites use and maintenance

"Starship success" equals fantasy! And looking only at so called "fixed costs" only applies once all the development costs have been returned. Starship development costs make Falcon 9 look like chump change!! Starship is a shiny white elephant with an enormous appetite!
If Starship were operational today they would need to have hundreds of profitable launches for at least several years to pay off all the investment! Who is going to pay for all those launches??? Why would you use a semi-trailer truck to deliver pizza??? What customer would regularly use Starship's theoretical capabilities?
Starship was designed to be the system used to establish a Mars colony. Have you heard Congress talking about and seriously considering such a commitment?? Half the country doesn't even want to pay for the healthcare of its citizens!! These same people think global warming is a left wing conspiracy! And all of a sudden these folks are going to want to build a Mars colony??
And what good would a Mars colony be??? At the very best, it would be a place where a select group of people to wait it out for catastrophe to depopulate the Earth. Then they would return to Earth to try again, because it would be the only viable place to go that could be reached.

Grow up a bit! When you read or hear something you don't want to hear or that challenges what you believe, trying to attack the individual doesn't solve anything. Instead, ask question to try to understand. Ask questions of yourself regarding your own beliefs. Recognize that their are a lot of people who know better than you do. Learn to separate reality from fantasy no matter how appeal fantasy tends to be.
BTW, I am a real professor and an electrical engineer with a broad education in physics, mechanical engineering and most technical sciences. Many, many years of experience. I also have a pretty good grasp on economics which is as much about human nature as it is te math we use to describe it!! It is not a science in the true sense, but the core principles are very much based in math. Despite motivations and perceptions, in the end, things need to add up!
I am also a student in the broad sense, in that I believe one should never stop learning. But often what you learn is not always obvious. Recognize what you don't know and use logic to reveal what may not be obvious.

Yeah, the biggest unknown are the launch costs. They're sure not just the cost of refuelling. The second stage is not re-used. I figure it costs at least $1M, and possibly several million. Also, retrieving the first stage from down range with a drone ship isn't free either. If I had to guess, all in, a launch probably costs on the order of $10M. Of course that's by far the lowest cost in the launch industry, but it's not insignificant either.

The problem of Starlink is its still more expensive than regular city internet so almost no one use it if they are in the city, that just make it viable to those who live or travel in isolated areas that has no internet. But those kind of people are very very few. Unless they can make Starlink cheaper to use in city compared to other competitions, bare growth will be seen.

Here in southern Spain we can rent the satellite dish (version 2) for 10 € a month. I chose this option (as version 4 with faster speeds is not yet available in Spain).
The monthly fee is 40 €, however the the Spanish government creatively added a Regulatory Fee of another 10 €. This fee does however not apply to competing ISPs (i.e. 5G, fiber). I suspect there will be a EU lawsuit coming shortly.

Starship is the only way this gets to be profitable. And that's if Starship could actually launch its original announced payload weight, which it can't (just announced). So, will Starlink survive another 5 years, which is how long it will take Starship to lower launch coasts enough to make the maintenance costs of the Satellite network profitable? I have my doubts. I would expect the Government to put a bunch of money into Starlink if it were about to go under, like they did Iridium, because at that point, the Federal Government gets access to the network, which would be invaluable for the Military. It's really less about is it profitable, and more about will it expand enough to give people the speeds they expect? Or will it turn into a government funded network that consumers get so-so speeds in congested cities?

The StarLink infrastructure is still being built. The eventual standardization of the Star Ship will result in 15X the number of SL satellites per launch 🚀 which will rapidly aid in completing the constellations.
The fact that both militaries and 5G cellular networks will also utilize SL ensures profitability as the network matures. The current cost merely reflects the “early adopter premium” phenomena.
SL is above the atmospheric and ground based disaster damage effects. Physically it is not easy to cut or tap. EMP will always be a risk, but satellites may be hardened, and ground based communications are likewise affected.

I think SpaceX Starlink is here to say and I'm sure they are significantly profitable. One cost of launching their satellites that I don't recall hearing someone factor in, is the cost of the second stage that is not reusable. I don't know that cost, but I've seen estimates of $9 million (you may have factored that in, I may not have heard it). Even with that added in, I think they are still getting satellites into space dirt cheap.

One thing everyone seems to not consider is Starship. Once it is up and running, SpaceX can launch hundreds of satellites per vs 40 or so now with Falcon 9. The constellation build out will advance by leaps and bounds. This constellation is in its infancy much like GPS was in the 1980's and look where GPS has gone in the last 40 years. Same with cell phones, wireless - these all started out clunky but given time and Moore's Law, they have advanced by leaps and bounds to where they are common place. SpaceX is staking out territory in the new world. It will be interesting to see if they can hold onto it.

That makes zero sense not building a new 747 after every flight has reduced that cost in airline flight cost. Not having to build a new first stage with 9 motors every flight has saved how much? Some boosters are being reused over 20 times! You should check your math.🤔

      A rocket is not a 747!
There is a reason why SpaceX keeps the real cost saving a secret!
In rockets the last 10% of fuel is most effective because the rocket is very light at this point. If you have to reserve the last 10% of fuel for landing, you can only use about halve of the original payload.
Additionally reusability makes the rocket more expensive and more error prone.

    • @michaeldautel7568
      @michaeldautel7568 2 месяца назад

@@niederrheiner8468 apparently it works for SpaceX to put star link into their orbits. The concept of 1 use in a 747 is an indication of how stupid the idea is. The real problem is no one else seems to be able to land the first stage so it is easier to claim it is cheaper to destroy it than reuse it. SpaceX is the Worlds largest provider to get things into orbit. So your last 10% of fuel blah, blah, blah excuse is just that an excuse. As to reusability making them more error prone that also appears NOT to be the case. 🤔
