In this video teaching, Shunyamurti clarifies that the realization of the Self happens outside of time, beyond the world. However, the ego-mind is caught in practicality, inner drives, desires, and fears. Shunyamurti contrasts this with the case of Sri Ramana Maharshi and gives a detailed account of Ramana's history leading up to and following his realization of the Self. Shunyamurti ends the teaching explaining that Self-realization will happen the moment we choose it.
Join Shunyamurti this July for a unique 7-day retreat:

    ABOUT SHUNYAMURTI: www.satyoga.or...
Shunyamurti has studied consciousness from every perspective-as a philosopher, a dream interpreter, a psychoanalyst, a wholistic healer, and a yogi. He was attracted to the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi from early in life, and he has practiced Self-investigation and realization of non-duality throughout his career, integrating all the developmental stages and levels of consciousness into a unified paradigm, to make the attainment of the always already liberated Self more accessible to the seeking being.

[To All Who Listen to Shunyamurti’s Teachings: Thank you all for your serious consideration of these ideas, which are intended to help you live a more coherent, peaceful, creative, compassionate, and productive life, and to be of service to the welfare of our world. We understand that our approach to existential concerns is not for everyone. We honor your right to disagree with these ideas and to stop listening if you do not like them. We gladly post comments with disagreements, if they are stated in a positive and mature manner, that allows civilized discourse about your own contrary ideas, and which may spark further useful and profound thought about the important issues that the teachings raise. If there are sincere questions about the teachings, or misunderstandings that can be clarified, Shunyamurti is always ready and willing to respond with helpful elaborations and even to cite texts and other authors whose writings may be of assistance to serious seekers. But comments that are simply angry and insulting, immature and unreasonable, will be removed because they undermine the educational and inspirational purpose of this project. Those who have questions that are more personal should write us in a private email and one of the teachers in our wisdom school will respond in the same way, or if the question is a very subtle or difficult one and requires a response from Shunyamurti, we will forward it to him on your behalf, and when he can, he will respond personally. By the way, we want to clarify that these teachings are new, they are not simply a repetition of old traditional teachings, but integrate current thought in the sciences, psychology, cultural studies, and philosophy. Shunyamurti speaks from his own realizations and deep clinical experience as a healer.]

I came across Ramana Maharishi years ago which inspired the following poem :
    Who Am I ?
Cosmic Consciousness, born into the flesh.
A creature in the kingdom of the Almighty.
The Formless Seer dwelling in a human host.
A spiritual being sent to this earthly plane.
A partner in the ascent of humankind.
A divine incarnation governed by the Logic of the Lord.
    Self-realized, I AM.

There cant be a better lecture on Ramana maharishi than this. His death experience was the starting point which culmunated in finding the source and destination of "I" thought in his own way.

I've been going through terrible anxiety & panic attacks. When I was a kid I remember I could go into a state of trance by going on asking my self this question " Who am I ? "... Naturally I could swift into a parallel state... but I could not contain that intense state for long so I used to force myself to get back to my normal state. Now I find it nearly impossible to do that meditation because of all the adulteration accumulated as I grew up. Now with all my negative experiences in life to which I was probably bound due to my past life karmas, I am not at peace. I can't meditate. At times I feel like taking the medicines that used to give me an artificial high. I need a Guru or a spiritual friend with whom I can elevate my consciousness so I can progress spiritually. At present my physical life is so materialistic that I can't find peace anywhere.

I would like a companion like that as it would make me feel comfortable talking about my fears, insecurities. I hope you can find a soulmate who loves you unconditionally and allows you to express yr darkest and deepest fears and supports you like an ideal mother would.

if you think you are someone, you lose being the whole. you seperate something out of the wholeness, to be someone. then you exist only in the part and lose all .like if you see one tree taken out of its context you lose the whole, you don't see the whole wood but only one tree , you seperate what is not seperated.. . so we suffer.. afraid and lonely and helpless.. lost in our own illusory encirceld part, a seperated circle. ... the wave rises up from the water it is made of... and falls back again.

What is more appropriate for progress in the spiritual journey
    ?
Getting involved in the some activity that is in someway of help to others , without losing focus on the self-enquiry , meditaion etc or Focus only on what is actually required for the spiritual journey .
In other words, does service to mankind or animals/and life around us help me progress in the spiritual journey or is it part of the stories of the ego /maya and need to be ignored?

Ramana is thinking about the origins of the soul and the underlying nature of reality... Man am i unevolved. I still havent figured out how to pick my nose in my car inconspicuously.

I sometimes wonder to what extent his life style was a displaced expression of his grief for his loss.

Grief was definitely a catalyst, but the process of spiritual discovery was no less real because of it. In fact, it likely would not have happened without it. Good thing he wasn’t born in the West, he would have been given a psychiatric diagnosis and medication to “normalize” him. The DSM-5 would call it depersonalization/derealization disorder. It’s a tragedy to think how many Ramanas might have been born here only to be labeled mentally ill.

He simply realized the Self. There was no out of body anything or beyond normal nothing. He realized that Self which is the actual normal consciousness. There was no connection, for what would connect to what? That would imply some duality, when the Self is only one entity. The ego doesn't connect with the Self, because the ego is only an illusion of the Self. When that illusion disappears for one person, the common interpretation is that they "connected" with something higher, because those interpreting it are still in the illusion of an ego which believes itself to be something lower. He simply realized that the lower "self" isn't a reality. Nothing out of body, but He saw that the Self is and always has been beyond the body and mind. That is the true normal.

Rather than asking “who am I?” it would perhaps be less presumptive to more broadly ask “what is this?”, as “who” and “I” are specifically associated from the outset with separate individuality.

You can ask whatever brings attention on itself. The words are not magic or sacred. Whatever causes the attention to look at itself then sit with that is what I can gather. Getting stuck n the phrasing would be a mistake I think.

This quote from Peter Russell relating to his TM practice touches on what I had in mind -
“When the mind is silent, when all the thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and memories with which we habitually identify have fallen away, then what remains is the essence of self, the pure subject without an object. What we then find is not a sense of ‘I am this’ or ‘I am that,’ but just ‘I am’ - (though) even to say ‘I am’ can be misleading as the word ‘I’ already has so many associations with an individual self. It might be more accurate to say there is ‘amness,’ or pure being.”

    • @justbreakingballs
      @justbreakingballs 5 лет назад +2

John Hannon yeh, I mix them up. Anything to bring that aware space to just sit. Even for a few seconds then something takes it. It’s so easily led away. It seems to have no say in what takes its attention. I find Rupert Spiras “am I aware?” is excellent at getting the mind to stop being engaged with some sense and acknowledge itself, staying in that is another thing.

Re. Rupert Spira - I attended a couple of his meetings down in Oxford a few years ago, but find his prissy English vicar persona somewhat off-putting.
In contrast, I find non-duality pointing more accessible when expressed by a swearing Irishman (Kenneth Madden), one of whose talks I’ve linked to elsewhere in this comment section.

as a thought i say.....matter is a flash reflection of any thought of the moment, A person image is a reflection of the thought cosiousness that he has and all others around him has too ,the thoughts is also the events and all thoughts are in the 4th dimension as their reflection makes the image of matter that we see as an illusion. Matter is not exist as you and everyone too NOT exist , space is not exist as it is a reflection of any possible thought can be from emptyness , matter is not exist as time have only a moment after the flash reflection of the thoughts of space . no one have the free willing to produse any thought just because you are not the produser of thougts and you are not exist as all space not exist actually and all thease creativity comes from emtyness nothing , ego mind can not realise this and ego is illusion ,all thougts are multipule dimensional events of more and more dimensional 4,5,6...dimensions of thougts of the toughts withoud ending ... there is not i am but we are as one at the moment of multipule thoughts ,so all expearences of every one is one experience in the same time ,so all people and everything is one thing as matter and thoughts and experience ,all is one , and in a higher consiousness enlighment everyone can be enything and just be as shumadi system is ...etc...
