- Hallstatt is a beautiful and famous place in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, near Salzburg. The village surrounds the Dachstein mountains and Hallstätter See, a peaceful lake. It is Austria's oldest and possibly most photographed destination, added to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List due to its natural landscape, prehistoric Hallstatt civilization, and the exploitation of salt mines in the region.
Hallstatt's Market Square is its central hub, with eye-catching architecture, small souvenir shops, restaurants, and pretty cafes. The surrounding mountains offer many hiking and rock climbing opportunities. The World Heritage Museum showcases the history of this charming mining village with an outstanding collection of artefacts and archaeological finds. The Salzwelten Hallstatt (Hallstatt Salt Mine) hosts a subterranean salt lake, an underground cinema, and the oldest wooden staircase in Europe. Visitors can also explore the spectacular Hallstatt Skywalk, next to the world's oldest salt mine.
The Bone House, located in the 12th-century Michael's Chapel, is one of Hallstatt's most impressive attractions. It displays more than 1200 skulls. The village of Hallstatt is so spectacular that China built a copy of it in the southeastern province of Guangdong. Discover a truly unique culture with a rich history in a breathtaking mountain setting that can only be found in the original.

I have known about Hallstatt since I was a boy learning the history of salt mining in Europe during the Iron and Bronze Age. Have never been to Hallstatt, but would love to go. I read that tourism is limited now?
And I can see why. This place is so beautiful you would never want to leave.

I was there in June. Hallstatt is picturesque and a marvel to be for those who live in the hustles and bustles of cities.
I loved the swans, people and the mountains around it, would definitely revisit it sometime.

Please do not bring plastics or disposables while visiting the town, do not litter or generate garbage.
Beautiful ?..Yes...A real town anymore ?...No....A tourist swamp ?..I would guess so...Super high rents and food cost over run with tourist everywhere would be my guess but what beautiful town in the world is not now....such a shame wish I would have traveled more 40 years ago...but no $$$$
