I love how many behaviors were observable in this one video! The mother checking every nook and cranny in the beginning, the baby watching everything as closely as it could, the teen sorta hanging back because it's been to a few hunts before, the first two skates that got away and then at the end the teen trying to shake pieces off the prey and the baby begging for food - absolutely stunning!
Thanks to drones, we learn so much in less amount of time spent. This 8 minute video has more info than 10s of hours Nature documentary of the past . We still have find out so much about Orcas and Whales. Wow, great job!
I love how Momma kept looking back every now and then to make sure the younger one was right beside her! Then the baby suckled for a minute and Momma shook her loose to get back on track with the hunting. Majestic beings! Truly amazing!
What's amazing is not just the teaching of hunting skills, but how the mother Orca ensures that the little ones get to feed and how to share the kill. After incapacitating the prey, she tosses it to her babies, and when she sees one struggling to tear it into bit sized pieces, she intervenes to rip it apart and for them. A wonderful mother and amazing parenting!
I believe every move was practised and intentional. The juvenile didn't struggle; they simply worked together, not just to tear the ray up, but specifically to open it the right way in order to expose the liver, which is what they're most interested in. You can see the juvenile positioning the ray before grabbing it. Other orcas are known for their surgical precision when removing the livers from great whites.
Wow what a great mama you can see her gently teaching them how to hunt. Then she catches it and the first thing she does is hand it to the eldest then breaks off a piece for the baby. So smart
They swim so gracefully. Perfectly build for speed and power. The baby and junior Orca are so cute. Very nice video sir. Amazing creatures and highly intelligent.
My absolute favorite animal ... especially after my interaction with a pod when i was a kid at Algies Bay. I am a born Kiwi and I was fishing in between the boats with my cousins. Just little sprats and then something tugged at the fishing line and it was a ray ..., we saw my mother come running down the beach and screaming at us to get back to shore. It was then I saw a dark fin, my cousins freaked thinking it was a shark but I knew it was an orca because it came up for air. They circled around our dinghy a few times, diving beneath it ... all the while I was open mouthed wanting to jump in and meet them. Like most countries there are laws about interacting with wild sea life, but not when they are the ones interacting with you. They seem to know we meant them no harm and would come back again, but in reality i knew they were after the ray. They come so close that i could have reached out to touch them and the vocalizations are just amazing. I wouldn't get another adrenaline filled moment until I went with my husband to South Africa for our pre honeymoon and a male lion was not 5 meters from us roaring. There is nothing like that. It sends shivers down your spine.
I was on a tour bus in Namibia, we got off to look at some Zebras. We only noticed the one male and two female lions lazing together in the tall grass right next to us when the male made a moaning sound. So we swiftly but calmly got back on the bus lol. They seemed uninterested in us (or the zebras).
Amazing story! I was in a private boat, off Newfoundland Canada. The water is black, you can't see anything. We knew whales were around but hadn't seen them. A giant humpback popped up alongside us, opening his big eye right beside the small boat!!! I was so shocked (and scared, if I'm honest) that I fell back in the boat. What a RUSH!!!!
This is a brilliant video. Thanks so much for your patience in filming it. I'm certain you spent a lot more hours to film this than what you show here. We feel involved in every moment of the hunt and you chose the music perfectly, to give a sense of suspense. Loved how you captured a couple of near misses before the final success, and the family sharing of the meal was intriguing. I think we saw the middle-sized one shaking to remove the liver and the liver floating off for mum to eat. Marine nature photography at its finest.
A mother whale and her two calves. One is probably about three or four and the other one is probably a year old. She’s teaching them how to hunt. How sweet.
I'm not sure why it's called "killer whale", more proper would be "whale and EVERYTHING ELSE killer". True Apex, except bull sperm whale, which does bring fear to orca.
The fluid beauty of these wild creatures is astounding. It makes me mourn the death of Lolita in that miserable, filthy tank even more. Thank you for sharing this breathtaking film with us, reminding us of how things should be and what we should fight for.
Great drone capture. Shows how intelligent this animal is. Scanning the area in formation like an army platoon trying to close all escape routes for the rays. Not only that...the fact that he gave his mother the liver of the ray clearly shows emotional intelligence. Fascinating!
Escape *routes. A rout is a word with a different meaning. How you get to pronounce route as rout escapes me. The rest of the world says “root” for route.
That was a fanastic piece of footage. The best I have seen. The whole hunting routine and even the teaching of the younger. Keep up the good work and thank you!
It's unbelievable how they work as a team, from both sides, as if they planned ahead, discussed the strategy and then applied it. It is amazing, also, how the little one does not wonder off, sticking to mum. And the way she gives food to adolescent, then sharing and also involving the baby at the end...FAMILY ❤️
They do planned ahead. Their communication skills are far more developed than we can even imagine. The fact that we do not understand their klicks and whistles, does not change a thing. IMO. :)
Love the drone ❤ Wonderfull watching Orca behavior without them being aware . So much going on . From the relationship between mother and juvenile to the loving bond with her smallest child 💕 Great capture 👌
They swim so gracefully and effortlessly in their ocean! It is adorable how the calf often swims just underneath their mom, twisting and turning with her
I think the infant must have been suckling for a minute, as well, and then Momma shook her loose, like, "Ok, let's get back on track! We've got skates to catch!" ❤
Я никогда такого не видела! Мамаша с детками! Младший не отстаёт, под прикрытием и вниманием мамы! Как добывают еду и кушают! Я просто в шоке! Спасибо!
LOVE love them way MORE than human beings. They are the perfect FAMILY. Gently sharing food. Nothing but LOVE and CARE. Better than us humans. Congrats to the background music. From a 4 ever orca adoring fan. Mom and PRECIOUS Babies... My good God.
Funny how the mother sometime takes a look at the drone... just a check while chasing rays... I'm 38, passionned by this kind of stuff since I was a kid... There is no way we could have these kind of images in the early 90s... We'd literally see nothing since the picture would be taken from the shore and would have last a few seconds... Drones really changed the game. Nice vid sir, hats off for the shots. Cheers from France.
Awesome video! The mom showed detailed knowledge of the terrain, at first I thought she was just turning side to side for fun, then after the first ray got away I realized she was using her eye to scan the bottom for food. Thanks Mick!
She was using echo location. She how they swam past the last location of the ray then she immediately turned back to catch it......sound waves (echo location)
Footage is educational and very entertaining. Fades are seamless, music is well chosen and blends well with a bit of menace and playful complexity . Subjects are an intriguing animal the drone seems to be the tool hats off to the pilot ! Well done ! 😎
This has to be one of the most amazing videos I have seen lately with Orcas! I have studied Orcas for many years and this video is truly phenomenal! Great job!
The mother initially catches and wounds the ray and lets it go so that the younger Orcas can practice catching it. The conversation around the dinner table is a bit different than humans, Mother Orca; "Son, please play with your food!"
SeaWorld is worse than prison. It's like solitary confinement plus endless humiliation for food not to mention you are confined after being kidnapped away for no reason. It's horrific for such emotional and intelligent mammals.
Stunning and beautiful. An insight we have never been able to witness so amazingly. The water was ridiculously shallow and they were so in there element 🥰
