To be honest, the "every time he chooses to betray me" line isn't very trustworthy due to the fact that soon after "what did you do to the other guards, to our family" a question ( albeit quite an accusatory one) is considered a betrayal
2:24 the reason why Hunter turns on belos is not because he’s a “grimwalker” and that’s how it functions it’s because he realised the person he has idolised and considered his “family” was a monster if you actually paid attention to his reactions in hollow mind you can see that
Random thought. I feel Willow’s character could have improved if they did this: She got branded. We see Willow sees her worth in her abilities, and maybe if she got branded, say in either ASIAS or LR, with a plant sigil, or even another coven sigil, she could have had a great arc revolving around her realizing her worth comes from her other attributes rather than one type of magic. This would have been a great way to make her character not revolve around Hunter or Amity. Also, I can’t help but believe Dana and the rest of the writing team could have made Hunter, Willow, Gus, and Luz better arcs that didn’t revolve around the Whites if Disney hadn’t screwed the crew over.
As a fellow libertarian socialist and huge Owl house fan, I largely agree with the main point of this video. Capitalism and artists will always be at odds. Disney, like all corporations, is a soul-less entity. Their goal is not to make good shows or movies, it's to make profitable content. However, I fundamentally disagree with your interpretation of "Hunter being a Grimwalker means he is destined to become a hero". I personally interpreted Belos destroying all his other Golden Guards as being a statement about his impossible standards, not Hunter's innate goodness. Something to keep in mind about Belos is that he is a narcissist and religious zealot from American Colonial times. In Belos mind, anything other than perfect blind obedience to him and his cause constitutes blasphemy. The other Golden Guards didn't get destroyed because they had some innate goodness. They got destroyed because Belos viewed them as imperfect and punished even slight deviations from his ideas. He is heavily implied to have ended his own flesh-and-blood brother for the sin of "consorting with witches". I think he would be even less forgiving to magical clones who he doesn't view as truly human. He is a human-supremesist who tried to commit g*nocide against the witches of the boiling isles. Doesn't seem like the most forgiving or compassionate person to me. Any Grimwalker is destined to be destroyed by Belos because they have free will and aren't the automatons Belos wants. Belos has a fictional idea of his brother in his head, a brother who was always there for him, who agreed with all his ideas and always supported him. His real brother didn't fit up to these ideals and neither did the endless copies he made because he tried to do something impossible. There are parallels one can make between Belos and abusive parents. Many abusive parents have too high standards for there kids and harshly punish kids for not meeting their high standards. Authoritarian parents often set arbitrary rules which are strictly enforced. Many parents use their religion to justify their abuse. Hunter's story is that of an abused child who follows in the footsteps of his bigoted, fundamentalist parent because thats all he knows. However, after meeting and talking to the "wild witches" his parent has taught him to hate, he moves away from his parents ideals and starts supporting the people he once demonized. I think a lot of real world children, especially LGBTQ children, can relate to this story. As an LGBTQ person myself, I can relate. I agree that this story is very rushed and imperfect. But I personally see the core of what the Owl House was trying to do and I really connected to it. Art is all about interpretation. What works for some people, doesn't work for others. Its totally fine if you didn't like Hunter. For me, he is not my favorite character (my favorite is probably Raine Whispers, with Lilith as a close second) but I can still see why people like him. A lot of people could relate to his story, see themselves in his shoes. There is a reason why "redeemed villain" is a popular trope in fiction. Everyone wants to hope that they aren't irredeemable, that its possible for them to make up for their own mistakes and become a better person. Zuko is many people's favorite character in ATLA. Vegeta is many people's favorite character in DBZ. And, likewise, Hunter is many people's favorite character in Owl house.
Wow just wow...... This is one of the most underrated videos I have ever seen. Over the last few days, I completely binge-watched The Owl House. I was looking up when the rest of season 3 would come out and I was shocked. Going into the show, I knew that The Owl house had a pretty big fandom. What I didn't know was all of this crap. Honestly, I am really confused about the future of this show. Apparently, the second episode of season 3 will premiere on January 21st, and I don't think it's been announced when the third episode will release. I assumed that these episodes would be the finale, but according to the fandom wiki, there will be a season 4. Which was announced on June 13th, 2022. I don't understand why the creators botched season 2 if there is going to be a fourth season, or why the "specials" are even a thing. Maybe the creators didn't know and season 3 was originally going to be the end. However, it could be completely possible that I am just uninformed about what's really happening. Regardless, this is one of the best video essays I have ever seen for many reasons. It was really obvious how much you cared about the show and its potential. You are very thorough with your research and getting your point across. Thank you for spending time creating this video and I'm looking forward to seeing your next project. THIS NEEDS MORE VIEWS!!

Tangent, I took a character that was originally a clone & made him not a clone. Iris was one of Mr.dark’s sons before being disowned. I called him Raymesis in your vids’ comment sections, but that’s his dead name.
I don't think Hunter lacks free will, not more so than the other characters at least. It's a free will he inherited from Caleb, as did every other grimwalker before him, but it's still free will. I am perfectly fine with every other Grimwalker having betrayed Belos in the past. Though it could've been handled in a more interesting or productive way maybe...
That’s the problem though - He should have developed this via his interactions with the main cast. Otherwise what’s even the point of him interacting with them? Why make a Clone Story about learning to defy your expectations, only to then go "actually defying expectations is the expectation". Why dedicate so many episodes focusing on him learning not to obey Belos when the entire history of the Grimwalkers is the story of their disobedience? He should have been the one good Grimwalker, to ensure that his interactions with the main cast actually meant something, instead of spending six episodes taking focus away from them only to reach an end state he was basically guaranteed to reach anyway.
OMFG It's almost perfect in it's meta narrative. A beautiful multi-dimensional diverse narrative being forced out of the spotlight and the diverse lovable and multi dimensional cast we love is forced to play second fiddle to a hackneyed, hollow, one dimensional blonde haired blue eye clone of every problematic anti-hero with no agency or narrative will...

Hey, I'm new here. Uh, I can't say I agree with everything you said about Hunter's character, but I still haven't watched you're video talking about that topic in depth so maybe I will change my mind. The whole Disney thing is really messed up, I didn't know about the thing with the Florida far-right governor. Recently Dana said in an interview that she had tried proposing the show to Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and both rejected it because of the lgbtq+ content and Disney was actually very supportive of it in the beginning, not trying to defend the company, obviously, and again they probably did it just to look "progressive" for a bit. I just wanted to give you an update on that, since you mentioned a similiar interview of Dana. I also wanted to know why you think Amphibia is the best of the "Gravity Falls' family", I thought it was much inferior to Owl House and Gravity Falls itself, specially during the first season and human world arc.
With regards to Amphibia first, it should be noted - I like Owl House much more than Amphibia. When I say I think it's the better show, I mean I think it was better made. It was able to tie up all it's loose ends and character arcs and redemption arcs and the likes in such a way that it was far more satisfying to me. While the first and parts of the third season were somewhat redundant, I would always prefer there be more content which wastes time, than there be too little content without enough time to wrap up the important parts. With regards to the interview, I've read that initially they weren't supportive, and that Dana was only able to get the lgbt+ stuff in there after fighting for it. This is available on her Wikipedia page under "Terrace and LGBTQ+ representation in the Owl House". Thank you for the update though. The issue with this sort of thing is that the entertainment industry is screwed up beyond words - Should Dana go too hard on Disney, it would likely lead to her being backlisted not just at Disney, but the entire entertainment industry, because no one wold want to work with someone who wouldn't keep quiet about stuff like this. Hopefully you at least enjoyed the video and the other video will at least let you know where I'm coming from with Hunter

I disagree with the take on Hunter. I think you had greater expectations for this I remind you secondary character and you were disappointed that it wasn't written as a straight forward redeem antagonist. But honestly I think having in universe reasons to debate if he has free will or not it's far more interesting than yet another Zuko wanna be like you wanted.
I mostly compared him to Zuko because A, he was clearly one of the main inspirations for Hunter, and B, frankly the only aspect of Hunter I wish they kept was any character having even a modicum of suspicion about him for longer than thirty seconds. Outside that I really wouldn’t mind what they did with him. Sometimes I do question if people who defend Hunter and I inhabit the same reality, because they seem to hear completely different things to what I say,
I can easely tell you the reasons why this show got cancelled aren't that deep and doesnt require for 30 minutes of explanation of the history of american politics: 1. During the pandemic, the same period where the owl House premiered, a lot of shows got their budget axed by the studios, like you said yourself, being procapitalist means people would think more to cut what makes the less money (yes the owlhouse is not a hit, cope fandom). 2. Disney was against the LGBT community way before Trump got elected, as for shows like Gravity falls Disney acted more restrictive to it than to the owl house, how you may ask? They never let the crew insert LGBTQ minorities in the show besides the last episode. Disney would not present the ultimatum of "if you put Lumity you are not getting a third season" if it was getting canned because of minorities they wouldnt even let the show get on television in the first place. 3. The owl house did not respected the Disney brand but for reason you didnt expect. Disney is a massive multi billionaire conglomerate that has a lot of propreties, and they would care a hell of a lot more about marvel and star wars rather than a original IP like the owl house. If you wanted to counterpoint using what Dana had said could be interpretated i respond with "would Dana, the person that publically said to leave Disney for political reasons, not reveal the true reason behind the show's cancellation?" At the end, making up the claim that "fan favorite show" got cancelled because of political conspiracy is a stupid, tribal nonesense i would see from a quartering video, not here. And people that avoid all criticism because the show got "cancelled": screw you, the writers wrote the show as it is now
@@Terranova57821 the message was not only directed to him, he at least exposed the show's flaws and I respect that. The reason I wrote that comment to begin with is that people are capable to spread misinformation in order to avoid criticism of the show they like. Hell I don't like Disney as a company too but it baffles me that instead of their actual, true crimes they committed instead people talk about "my fav show got cut".
I'm fairly sure the (poorly nicknamed) "Don't Say Gay" bill was aimed at preventing the introduction of questioning sexual identity to children below a certain grade-level. Or at least, that's how I understood it. And no, little children shouldn't have those kind of questions or ideas posed to them at such a young age. For one thing, that's not a topic for little children, like any discussion of sexual biology - wait til they're older and know more like with sex ed. For two, insisting that they start questioning or disputing what sex they are when they're not even 10 only leads to emotional confusion for them - if not then, then later on. Seriously, would you want a teacher telling your 7yo son "You're not a boy, you can be a girl if you want"? That's very obviously purposeful manipulation; very likely an agenda-push targeted at those who lack the mental framework to understand or defend against it, let alone make informed, objective decisions. It doesn't even matter what side of the identity-politics line you come down on - teachers should not be encouraging kids who don't even understand the term "sexual identity" to question or reject theirs, when they haven't even been alive long enough to form an idea of their *individual* identity as a person, let alone a sexual identity. I don't subscribe to political poles; I think they're both wrong, as they both circle back to the same evil place. I believe in balance and make up my own mind. I despise cruelty, arrogance, and greed as the Three Prime Evils that rule makind. I have absolutely zero problems with the homosexual community - homosexuality is as natural as heterosexuality, and nothing Mother Nature designed is ever bad. I have gay and bi friends; I think TOH is a great show (until they were forced to rush and cram everything). But when adults attempt to put their own ideas into the minds of children that are not their own, and are therefore not responsible for - a process that by its very nature is predatory and unnatural - impelled by an exterior agenda that seeks to distort or reject established, fundamental fact that has been scientifically and mundanely verified for literally millions of years by virtue of its very utilization in the perpetuation of biological life ...that's a problem. That's the same kind of malicious manipulation of ideas that INGSOC employed in Orwell's 1984, or any other objectively-immoral societal framework. I digress. Tl;dr: no, the bill wasn't aimed at gay speech. It was aimed at the people - and there have been many in the papers - trying to push identity politics on children, who are supposed to be shielded absolutely from politics until they reach an age where they can *decide for themselves* what their views are. Or so I understand, anyway. Maybe I'm wrong about the bill. I think you can tell what my own views are, regardless - as Pink Floyd famously sang: "Hey! Teacher! Leave them kids alone!" I'm with you regarding corporations. They may have money, but we have raw numbers. Swarm them under and drive them extinct.
You said it. Allow me to copy your comment, cuz it's the best argumentive destricpotion of todays 1st world issues i ever read. I agree wholeheartedly with what you said and it's an honour to see that there are people in this world that keep a sane mind today. Rock on!

Sometimes I do question if people who defend Hunter and I inhabit the same reality, because they seem to hear completely different things to what I say,
Can i know who is your favorite character and why?
I've decided to let go of criticizing hunter at this point. You're right, let's just focus on doing better than what Disney has given us
I still hate Hunter so much. It saddens me that I can’t enjoy the show like I used to
Thank you their is someone not being fooled by hunter character arc
@@ItsN1Z I felt like he didn’t really have a redemption.
@Terry Solar Or better yet, just cut him from the show all together
@@ItsN1Z Seems like some of you all are taking this a little too seriously. For the most part he's an all right character
I can easely tell you the reasons why this show got cancelled aren't that deep and doesnt require for 30 minutes of explanation of the history of american politics:
If you wanted to counterpoint using what Dana had said could be interpretated i respond with "would Dana, the person that publically said to leave Disney for political reasons, not reveal the true reason behind the show's cancellation?"
At the end, making up the claim that "fan favorite show" got cancelled because of political conspiracy is a stupid, tribal nonesense i would see from a quartering video, not here. And people that avoid all criticism because the show got "cancelled": screw you, the writers wrote the show as it is now
have you watched the rest of his videos and why the shows flawed also.
At first I liked owl house until the prom episode. That's word went downhill for me
Not sure about that but hey we all got our opinions I guess
Teacher! Leave them kids alone!"
I'm with you regarding corporations.
Rock on!
