I can't believe that these guys can't believe that they enjoyed these movies. They are literally some of the most critically acclaimed movies of all time. Of course they're incredible lol
Its an inside joke and they say that they like them. Now that they are watching the extended cuts they get to be a little more engrossed in the lore which seems to be helping them enjoy it more this time around.
It's so great to see Nick and Kevin be positive about LOTR - I know they like to talk shit about it as an ongoing Kinda Funny joke. The world-building, lore, dialogue, cinematography and musical score in this franchise is jaw-droppingly good. Also shout-out to Elyse, she's a great addition to this In-Review series!
I’ve been petrified of this review. These films are more than films to me. The appendices documentaries on these films, they taught me more about film-making than any media course. I’m so happy for Andy and relieved you guys appreciate the masterpieces your about to watch.
Interestingly, according to Tolkien's notes, he intended them to be written as one giant book but he was told it wouldn't sell. He broke it into six, but they didn't want to risk the printing costs, so they sold it as three books of two parts each. Now the extended edition is viewed in the traditional six story parts, very cool.
The full reason, as I understand it, was that post-war printing costs meant that if it was sold as a single book, it'd have to be priced so incredibly high that nobody would buy it. It wouldn't be sold as a complete work until 1968, fourteen years after Fellowship first came out.
Watching the Fellowship for the first time, in the movie theater, at 11 years old, (I dare say the perfect age for it) was a life changer for me. I had always love watching movies, but the scale, the beauty, the magnitude of it all was on a level I didn't thought possible back then. I know it's probably hubris to say that there is never gonna be another LOTR, but being an adult now and everything, there is never gonna be another LOTR for me personally and so that trilogy is always gonna have a special place in my heart.
Peter Jackson didn't direct Mortal Engines, Christian Rivers did with Jackson as a producer. Jackson's latest-directed film was They Shall Not Grow Old.
Like the films Ninja Assassin and Dredd, in 10 years time we'll find out who really directed Mortal Engines and surprise surprise it won't have been Christian Rivers.
No joke, I have watched the extended editions, all three films back-to-back, all 11/12 hours or whatever it is, in a single sitting about a dozen times. At one point I had every single line of dialogue committed to memory and could tell you the exact scene by nothing more than the musical cue. I haven't done it in a long time, but for about 6 or 7 years straight my Christmas tradition was marathoning these films.
From top to bottom, I have this being better than Star Wars. The cast was so strong, the model making that weta did is miraculous, and the art that they used from John Howe and Allan Lee is phenomenal. Also the score Howard Shore did is on par with John Williams. The fact Fellowship looks as good as it does, on the budget it had, is another miracle.
I really don’t agree with the visuals. A ton of the special effects look pretty bad and a LOT of the filmmaking is honestly pretty sloppy. Just unmotivated coverage and tons of the same kind of closeup. It’s a far cry from the direction in the first two Star Wars films, and the special effects in those hold up insanely well.
Good call on spitting them up. Allows you to obsord the details more and will cut down on the length of these. Shorter but we won't need to rush at the end like the other lengthy reviews. You guys are doing it. You're living the dream!
Man this is definitely the most excited I've been for an In Review series! I appreciate you guy's decision to split each movie in to two parts -- if any series needed more in depth discussion and care, LotR is def the one. I'm lookin forward to the next episode!!
I'm not done watching this yet, but I just needed to say that Elyse Willams is truly a joy and I am so excited to have her on for the remainder of this series
Correction: Tolkein used "Orc" and "Goblin" interchangeably. The orcs/goblins were corrupted elves, and the Uruk-hai are orcs crossed with humans. In the decades since LotR, the pop culture concept of Orcs and Goblins shifted where modern day orcs are more like the Uruk-hai and goblins are like Tolkein's orcs.
First: Awesome intro and great work as always crew Second: Elyse is freaking awesome, she makes a great addition to this In-Review Third: I personally loved this movie. I saw it all the way through Lastly: Absolutely shout out to the homie Kbabz for the great work he did. Can't wait to click the link and read it all
About how The One Ring works: You’re correct in assuming that the ring is a part of Sauron first of all, it’s semi-sentient, but aside from that it basically works as a power amplifier and an agent of corruption. The more powerful a person/being is when they put on the ring the more powerful it makes them and the easier it is for it to corrupt them. That is why Frodo has to be Ringbearer - Hobbits are by far the weakest and most pure of all the races. That’s also why the only power they get from the ring is Invisibility. Another random fact about The One Ring is that it canonically can change size at will which is how it slipped off Isildur’s finger leading to his death.
I don't think the hobbits only get the power of invisibility from the ring, it's just that invisibility is the most obvious one to show in the movie. I think hobbits also become stronger and faster and stuff like that
Ewan Callister Pretty much. He basically put half his soul and/or power in to The Ring when he forged it, which is why it’s semi-sentient. If you know the story of Final Fantasy 7 it’s similar to the JENOVA Reunion theory, only The Ring is the only piece of Sauron out there.
Confirmed. In the book Frodo asks Galadriel why he can't use the power of the ring. And she says it's because he hasn't trained his mind and will toward the domination of others.
These movies were important for me as a boy. First time I saw in a movie, men be friends, that were vulnerable and tender with each other, unafraid to have a good cry.
Good to see Tim be open to stuff like this. Similiar to when Greg watched Captain America and realized he'd been missing out. There's so much more out there too!!
I ended up watching all 3 in 2 days, didn’t realize how much I like these movies. I think extended versions add so much to the lore that actually helps the story
Since we haven’t gotten “all sorts of sports with and Cortez” in awhile. We should get “all sorts of rings with Andy Cortez.” Also Elyse, please don’t hold back! We want to hear you rave about these movies
Thank you so much for this series. Forgot how much I loved these movies and how much of my childhood was influenced by it. Rewatching now. See you guys next week
I got chills watching this. Lord of the Rings is so important to my life. Watching my favorite people talk about my favorite movies and loving it was amazing.
I always have to put Fellowship first because not only am I a big nerd who likes fantasy like this, but I also like RPG video games and once the Fellowship is together is just reminds me of old school Final Fantasy or something.
I’d have to agree, but the opening of Two Towers is the best of the three. Gandalf falling down into the depths of Moria fighting the Balrog is so fuckin hype!
I totally get breaking them down into two parts. There is alot to cover, and a 3+hour podcast is alot to have everyone commit to. Thanks for finally doing LOTR!
1:18:53 I love that you can see Elyse light up and get ready to jump in when Kevin is surprised by how long Frodo hung on for, but she politely waits for her turn. She's clearly going to talk about it being a plot point that Frodo survived for a long time with the illness. Every time I have something to add like that, I can see Elyse sit up to talk too.
Gdi I’m 20 minutes in and I’m about to buy the extended trilogy. Haven’t seen the movies in so long even though I love them dearly and Elyse and Andy’s passion has infected me. So excited to watch them again along with all of you!
I was already hyped for this In Review because I love both Kinda Funny and these movies. But bringing in Elyse already makes this better. Can't wait for the rest!
This weekly wait is killing me! But emotionally I’m super glad to have a reason to watch the series and have this to get that feeling of talking to friends and family about it
Guys rewatching like I said and this is the first time I noticed that after throwing the ring in the fireplace and no writing coming over. The relief on Gandalf’s face is heart breaking. Then when Frodo says wait the pain is so palpable!
I wish this was an in person review. Its awesome we get content and great content, but trying to interject and converse and not talk over each other is tough. I feel like Elyse wanted to say a few things but got stepped on or not heard. So glad she is in on it
This is a message from the future. The lord of the rings trilogy set in 4K is probably the best 4K set I have owned so far. The Dolby Atmos and 4K picture really is something you have to experience for yourself
The Extendeds have “fan club” credits. They sped them up for the next two, but for Fellowship they take twice as long so it’s literally 20 minutes of extra credits. Fun fact: when the extendeds of FOTR and TTT were briefly released theatrically in December 2003, they did not include the fan club credits, despite being on the DVD. They also screen without intermission in theaters when extended.
1:15:09 The movie specifically mentions the origins of the Uruk Hai as being being orcs crossed with goblin men. Gandalf says as much in the scene where he is talking with Elrond.
The LOTR is my favorite IP ever. I watched these movies and the extended appendices constantly but it's been about ten years since I went back and watched them because 1) they are way too long just throw on and watch and 2) the movies are so sacred I was afraid to rewatch them and have them not live up to the magic that they were in my head, but rewatching it has lived up to all my expectations.
Elyse says show me them blue shorts and Andy dances, I haven't watched these since I was a little kid, can't wait for more of this Elyse is a national treasure
I'm so happy you guys are finally doing this. When I think of the greatest movie series of all time it goes to Star Wars, Indiana Jones and lord of the rings. After that it's a close tie with Aliens, Predator, Terminator, Star Trek, Rambo...
Chiming in late so it may have been mentioned in later parts, but the books were originally intended to be 1 giant book, mentally divided into 6 parts by Tolkien. The publishing company pushed him to make them 3 to keep a balance between a huge commitment by a reader, and by them.
The lord of the rings did not face the same production problems as the hobbit and it was not a fluke. Watch the lenghty behind the scenes content of Lord of the rings and you will see how much time, effort and love was put into these movies. Its a reason why it works so well and thats how commited Peter and the crew was to nail it. Elyse*
Hope she sees this

Tired: Aw, I'm sad to have to wait longer to see them finish the series.
Wired: Oh shit, five more weeks of Elyse Thrillems on In Review, baybee!!!
this is truly the best take 🙌🙌
I’ve been petrified of this review. These films are more than films to me. The appendices documentaries on these films, they taught me more about film-making than any media course.
I’m so happy for Andy and relieved you guys appreciate the masterpieces your about to watch.
Most anticipated IN REVIEW to date, Lets Go!!!
LOTR is the best damn trilogy of all time. I'm so happy y'all are reviewing them!
Interestingly, according to Tolkien's notes, he intended them to be written as one giant book but he was told it wouldn't sell. He broke it into six, but they didn't want to risk the printing costs, so they sold it as three books of two parts each. Now the extended edition is viewed in the traditional six story parts, very cool.
god that's such a nerdy fact and it's so tasty
I have a hardcover single volume of LotR and it is a big ass book. I totally get what his publisher was thinking.
The full reason, as I understand it, was that post-war printing costs meant that if it was sold as a single book, it'd have to be priced so incredibly high that nobody would buy it. It wouldn't be sold as a complete work until 1968, fourteen years after Fellowship first came out.

Feel exactly the same - I was 12 when it came out
Peter Jackson didn't direct Mortal Engines, Christian Rivers did with Jackson as a producer. Jackson's latest-directed film was They Shall Not Grow Old.

I’m just so damn happy for Andy that we finally get to LoTR in Review
Elyse needs to be on more KF In Reviews. James too. They’re both passionate about movies.
Man this is definitely the most excited I've been for an In Review series! I appreciate you guy's decision to split each movie in to two parts -- if any series needed more in depth discussion and care, LotR is def the one. I'm lookin forward to the next episode!!
Minute 1: Elyse let’s you know this is going to be a BANGER
I'm not done watching this yet, but I just needed to say that Elyse Willams is truly a joy and I am so excited to have her on for the remainder of this series

Was just about to write this! Hoping the guys see it before next week (Y)
Been busy lately so not seen much content from the guys for a bit, but Nick's beard game... DAMN. Rocking it!
I ended up watching all 3 in 2 days, didn’t realize how much I like these movies. I think extended versions add so much to the lore that actually helps the story
I recognize these guys are movie buffs, but there are a lot of things they were saying about Tolkien's world that had me grinding my teeth. xD
As soon as I saw Elyse, I knew this was gonna be my favorite In Review yet.
Since we haven’t gotten “all sorts of sports with and Cortez” in awhile. We should get “all sorts of rings with Andy Cortez.”
Also Elyse, please don’t hold back! We want to hear you rave about these movies
15 minutes in and all the guys' eyes are popping out at the knowledge Elyse brings to the table. I love her.
In review is easily the pod I look most forward to each week, so damn enjoyable. I really hope you do alien in review one day!
So happy you guys are doing this! My wife and I started re-watching them again last night! :)
They should do, The Planet Of the Apes movie in review
The entire Lord of the Rings production just might be my favourite film of all time.
Thank you so much for this series. Forgot how much I loved these movies and how much of my childhood was influenced by it. Rewatching now. See you guys next week
That intro is insane. Hyped for this, and for you to realise that this is the greatest film series of all time
10:47 Kevin's face when the videos drop and come back and he hopes no one notices XD
I got chills watching this. Lord of the Rings is so important to my life. Watching my favorite people talk about my favorite movies and loving it was amazing.
I'm so happy you guys are finally reviewing my favorite movie series of all time!
i rewatch these at least once a year. still my favorite.
Make these parts longer with more personal thoughts on moments. This was incredible 👌💙
1- Return of the King
2- Fellowship of the Ring
3- Two Towers
All of them are 10/10
I reverse this order lol.
ArkRaider22 it is hard to ranked them, they’re so goooood
I always have to put Fellowship first because not only am I a big nerd who likes fantasy like this, but I also like RPG video games and once the Fellowship is together is just reminds me of old school Final Fantasy or something.
Yup
I’d have to agree, but the opening of Two Towers is the best of the three. Gandalf falling down into the depths of Moria fighting the Balrog is so fuckin hype!
Elyse was awesome. I'm so excited for the rest of this series.
Glad you have finally done this, but defo the one i have missed most not being together in the studio....
So proud of you guys for doing this
God I love these movies! I’m so excited for this and love breaking them down into 2 parts each!
I totally get breaking them down into two parts. There is alot to cover, and a 3+hour podcast is alot to have everyone commit to. Thanks for finally doing LOTR!
I've been waiting for this one! I think these may be the only movies I ever watched a midnight theatrical release for.
Love the chill music at the end. Take care guys
I'm so jealous of anyone watching along with this for the first time...ugh if only.
I’m so happy Elyse is doing these reviews!
lol finally getting to this TWO YEARS LATER (wtf) after seeing these for the first time in IMAX here in Toronto.
This was so fucking great. Keep up the good work guys; this is why I'm a patron.
Finally!!!!!!! Omg you guys took so long!
Hearing Nick thoroughly enjoy these films is making me cry as much as Sam saying “I know you are. And I’m coming with you!”
I love the read through of this! Everyone's hype is so good!
Loved every second of this
Gdi I’m 20 minutes in and I’m about to buy the extended trilogy. Haven’t seen the movies in so long even though I love them dearly and Elyse and Andy’s passion has infected me. So excited to watch them again along with all of you!
All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.
Time spent perfectly
One of my most wanted in-reviews!
I was honestly blown away by this movie. It’s seriously a perfect movie. I had tears in my eyes and chills multiple times.
Dude Nick's beard is lookin naaaasty. In a good way of course. Keep growin that thing.
I was already hyped for this In Review because I love both Kinda Funny and these movies. But bringing in Elyse already makes this better. Can't wait for the rest!

1:06:51 .... NICK being The Ring falling onto Frodo's finger LOL
Nick was incredible with the plot yet again.
Elsye is worth the wait for these reviews!!
Watching LOTR for the first time and really enjoying these reviews.
I wish this was an in person review. Its awesome we get content and great content, but trying to interject and converse and not talk over each other is tough. I feel like Elyse wanted to say a few things but got stepped on or not heard. So glad she is in on it
Elyse is a perfect fit for this
I’ve been waiting for this!!!
So glad they don’t hate it. I love these movies so much and have seen them more times than I can remember.
Just watched Wonka review where Andy suggested for the holidays to rewatch Lord of the rings and watch your reviews… OK you don’t have to twist my arm
Yay its back! Got 30 minutes in then it got Privated
Same
They fixed the intro, it was stuttering earlier.
This is a message from the future. The lord of the rings trilogy set in 4K is probably the best 4K set I have owned so far. The Dolby Atmos and 4K picture really is something you have to experience for yourself

I have been waiting for this since the beginning. Let’s go andyyyyyyyyy
Can Elyse stay here forever?:0
The Uruk-Hai are a combination of orcs and goblin-men.
I am so excited for these series
Elyse says show me them blue shorts and Andy dances, I haven't watched these since I was a little kid, can't wait for more of this Elyse is a national treasure
Thank you for the repost!
I fully expected Elyse to be wearing the new shirt.
I'm so happy you guys are finally doing this. When I think of the greatest movie series of all time it goes to Star Wars, Indiana Jones and lord of the rings. After that it's a close tie with Aliens, Predator, Terminator, Star Trek, Rambo...

Once again idk why the hell funhaus isn't saying anything about them appearing on kinda funny content too. This is great
The look Elise gives when Tim says he’s only seen these movies once... 9:12 Lol
Kbabz is a legend an integral part to the Fellowship
The lord of the rings did not face the same production problems as the hobbit and it was not a fluke. Watch the lenghty behind the scenes content of Lord of the rings and you will see how much time, effort and love was put into these movies. Its a reason why it works so well and thats how commited Peter and the crew was to nail it. The hobbit biggest problem was that when Guillmero dropped out all the prep time he got went to waste and the studio coudnt fundt the same preptime for Peter Jackson so he basicly played catch up the whole shoot.
Great review! This is a great moment 1:27:57
Haven't seem the extended versions, but Fellowship is a perfect movie, and probably my favorite. Hope they mention Bret McKenzie's elf cameo. Pumped to have Elyse on board!
Elyse is a great addition here!
Just to answer a question Tim had as to why there weren't 9 Ringwraiths that attacked the group at Amon Sul, its because (in the books) Gandalf had drawn off some of them the night before. He encountered them and the Ringwraiths split up and 4 chased after Gandalf while the other 5 stayed around Amon Sul.
Came for elyse. Stayed for the rings.
44:27 I believe Bilbo is the only one to ever willingly part with the ring after carrying it.
