    Started shanking the ball out of nowhere about 4 weeks ago. It gets in your head, you expect it on every swing and totally lose confidence. I saw John Rahm doing the towel drill at the PGA... I tried it and I was cured! Your explanation of how the shank happens and how to stop doing it ... really, really helped me understand it. Thanks

    Yes, that's it! You dissected my shank swing perfectly. The open stance is what was taught for years. I do notice the difference with a square stance and the weight a bit forward with the hands close the job gets done. But now I would like to know how to hit low vs high as the conditions might call for.

    Dang it. I think I do this open stance move. My mini over the top must cause me to pull my shots left. I didn't know I have a open stance on pitch shots. I will square my stance and rotate. Thank you for this tip!!

    So funny. I’ve been struggling with this and it wasn’t until I moved in super close to the golf ball and kept the club really close to my body that I began to strike the ball on the club face. It’s still pretty close to the heel though.
    Anyway, glad I saw this. Now I have supporting evidence to a trail I thought I was on

    Great lesson. It's uncanny that I just watched a video with Patrick Reed where he talked about his closed stance when he pitches the ball. He said the same thing that from an open stance his swing felt much more restricted and his contact wasn't as crisp.

    Hi. New subscriber. I'm amazed by the golf education that you are teaching. Alot of insights I've never heard of before. And I have studied golf. From golfing machine to Hogan's lessons. One question that no one has answered , for me anyway.
    Do you have to keep your head steady as you swing? When I swing and rotate well, I can't keep my head steady in one spot.
    I immediately rotate my head , my hips are clearing and my shoulders are right behind.
    Can you answer this? Much appreciated.
    Thanks. Andre.

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  3 года назад

      Hi Andre, thank you very much for subscribing! In regards to the head, I like the head to stay centred, but rotating the head is absolutely fine with me as it aids chest rotation 👍🏼

  • @jabutch11

    My problem with shanking comes more on the 20-60 yard shots. Doesn’t happen on the course too much but it’s in my head.
    But after maybe 20-30 practice shots on the approach I start to shank it. Most times I will use a 54 degree and just sort of chip it up with a one hop stop. Now so I don’t shank it I’m starting to just run flop shots up on the green. Would everything in this video still sort of explain that problem?

  • @suri7075

    Usually the open stance allows easy follow through from a weight on lead foot pitch shot as hips are already set for follow through. Any comment on this please?

    Super this. I used to "Sherman" the odd pitch and fixed it exactly like this. On another topic, have you thought of doing a vid along the lines of "golf is a game of under not around"? Left shoulder down, right shoulder down. As opposed to flat. I sorted out my shoulder tilt 3 years ago when I switched to Stack and Tilt which I still use on my irons but go back to "conventional" for driver (I'm 66 with sciatica and S and T is too "athletic" for me with driver). I see so many golfers too flat. Thought it might help some?

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Martin! Absolutely, I have a video planned for next week which is all about tilt and especially keeping the lead side down in the first 3/4 of the downswing, so very stack and tilt influenced 👍🏼

    Do you have any videos on how to hit up on driver ? Im fairly high swing speed player, and hit my irons a good distance according to what iron im using, but ive always struggled with getting max out of my driver. When im on trackman, im about neutral to 1-2 down, but im swinging at 113-114mph, and not getting anywhere near the distances i know, i can get out of it, because the spin is way to high
