Inspired in 2011 by the brutal murder of her mother, “THERE’S ALWAYS A ME TOO” was ignited by Nancy Gale, the founder of AMBITION. One of a series of supplemental programs, the founding insight was straightforward yet profound - for each ‘bad’ or otherwise overwhelming experience that one has, there is always someone else who can say, “Me Too, I had a similar experience and here’s how I overcame it.” “THERE’S ALWAYS A ME TOO,” was intended as an affirmation of power, a tool for growth instead of a barrier to resolution. A candid platform, inclusive of all socio-economic backgrounds, the forum encouraged solution-driven thinking at its best, with its participants becoming leaders as they share their greatest challenges and the process of overcoming them.
Although a movement originated by Tarana Burke in 2006, it was in 2017 that the phrase “Me Too” became widely associated with sexual harassment and assault in the workplace. As more and more women spoke out about their experiences, the phrase “Me Too” evolved into a rallying cry and a movement demanding systemic change.
Meanwhile, at AMBITION, a new program had evolved: “YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME.”
While we all know that you “can’t judge a book by its cover,” the truth is that we do that every day. We do that with our peers, our classmates, with people we have known for years and complete strangers. We think we can “tell” by looking at someone what their life has been like and what they are “about.”
“YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME” challenges participants to engage in meaningful, uncensored conversations that go below the surface and to listen without judgement. It offers a methodology for sharing our stories from a power-not-pity perspective. These honest exchanges are empowering and lead to real understanding and change.
While “YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME” grew out of “THERE’S ALWAYS A ME TOO,” for clarity’s sake it is now the broader entity and has absorbed the mission of AMBITION’s “Me Too.” Moving forward, AMBITION will put its focus on “YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME” and creating change through proactive dialogue and empowered behavior.
