Haven't heard this song since it was released as a single. It was Uriah Heep's only Top 10 hit in South Africa. I remember really liking the song because of the progression of intensity of sound. In my case this is certainly a "forgotten song" from my youth. Thank you for choosing to react to it.
Sounds like this "alternate" version is just the shortened single edit. The album version is around two minutes longer with an extended instrumental outtro.
My favorite heep song. "Destruction lay around me from a fight I could not win" makes me think of Vegeta laying face down in the dirt after being beat by kid Buu. I was waiting for the ending, then it just faded off. Needed to do the album version.
How many rock bands sing about becoming a wiser, better person? It's a theme Uriah Heep return to frequently. "There is no strength in numbers, have no such misconception". You have to be the best version of yourself that you can be; nobody else can do it for you. Who or what is the Lady in Black? Who can say. Maybe it's that small still voice inside us. Maybe it's epiphany. Maybe it's just an imaginary conversation between the singer and a wise woman.
That's probably the mellotron you're hearing. I think. The original version of this is a bit longer and, IMO kind of grittier in the vocals. I'd never heard this version before but it's fine. :)

It has the repetitiveness of the classical tune Bolero by Ravel.
