  • The driveway we’re working on today is in pretty bad shape. It’s a gravel driveway, so it is susceptible to being taken over by weeds and grass. As you can see in the accompanying video, the entire length of the driveway is covered in so much grass and so many weeds that it’s getting hard to tell that there’s any gravel there at all!
    Something had to be done, so the customer called us in to redo this driveway. If you have a landscaping job you want done, just give us a call or text, or email us at HappyDumpTruck@gmail.com for a free estimate. We do junk removal, hauling, landscape, and demolition solutions. For this job, we need to remove a bunch of overgrown groundcover and lay down some new gravel.
    We start out by using our mini skid steer to dig up all the excessive grass and weeds. The attachment we use for this grass removal is a power rake, which cuts through the grass with a serrated spinning cylinder. In the video, you’ll see that using this rake on the overgrown driveway resembles running a vacuum cleaner over a dirty rug. The grass is cleanly separated from the soil by this attachment, like dust being sucked up by a vacuum. We use the power rake attachment to chew up all the weeds and grass growing on the gravel driveway.
    After the weed removal we need to level the driveway, which has been chewed up by the power rake. Yes, unfortunately when using a power rake it cuts through both the plants and the soil, so we need to smooth out the driveway to prep it for laying down the gravel. To do this we use another mini skid steer attachment, a land plane. This tool takes rough and uneven soil and smoothes it out. A smooth layer of dirt is important when laying down new gravel, because it ensures that the gravel will be smooth on top of it.
    After leveling and compacting the driveway, we put down the new gravel. We use gravel made of #8 crushed limestone. After laying down the grit using a bucket attachment, we smooth it out using the same land plane attachment as before. Finally, we use a hand rake to clean up the edges of the new driveway. If you watch the final video, you’ll see that the final result is worth all the work that went into it. If you have a driveway that you need worked on, don’t hesitate to contact us at 317-784-8760 (call or text) or HappyDumpTruck@gmail.com for a free estimate!

    Great job, you make me want to go and buy a mini skid. I use to operate heavy equipment back in the 80s, I loved it. You make me want to do it again.

      Awesome! Thanks for watching. No, it's a land plane/leveler. And, yes it's the simplest tool but makes the biggest difference when spreading rock or topsoil.

    Nice videos. That Vermeer looks like a quality machine. What service issues or parts usually break on that machine? What is your history with Vermeer or other mini machines?

    • @SchottServices
      @SchottServices  Год назад

      I started with Toro Dingo.
      For the Vermeer, Oil changes are slightly difficult but not impossible. It's a lot of engine packed in a small area so not great getting hands/tools thru to some areas of engine compartment. Belt changes are same way but after 900 hours have only changed fan belt once. I've replaced tracks a few times and they are fairly easy. I changed main drive sprocket after 750 hours. All hoses, pumps have lasted fine. My machines had radiator leaks that Vermeer replaced for free under extended warranty so hopefully they survive a good while.
      Vermeer is a great brand. They are expensive at my dealer to fix and parts seem to be expensive to replace. But I'm guessing that's the same with any brand. I do as much as I can on my own though.

    Great job. Why no compactor at the end of the job?

    • @SchottServices
      @SchottServices  Год назад +1

      I've never used a compactor on any driveways. I'll sometimes run my machine back and forth over it through which weighs 4000 lbs

    i dont get why people use #8 stone for a driveway. it will constantly roll around and make ruts at the street where cars turn in. all that stuff is meant for is bedding/back filling pipe in a trench, or hydrant weap holes. i guess people like the clean look without the lime dust.

    • @TheFamilyFarmOn42
      @TheFamilyFarmOn42 Год назад

      I prefer 73's, which are 8's with the dust. Packs much better and helps to smother out the weeds.
