My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

It looks like the owner of this 8010 gives it a hot supper. That never helps things. I own a 9010, and I am a bit obsessive compulsive about taking care of it. No kill wire issues for me. Yet. After watching this, I may take preventative measures. Thanks for another great video.

Another entertaining and informative video. I don't have the 8010, but my neighbor does. I might be able to help him out someday. I enjoyed the "back-pack blower boogie" near the end. Also, I appreciated your comment about calling the manufacturer and getting the story that they have never heard of that issue before. I have a self-feeding drum sander in my wood shop that began mis-tracking a few months ago. I replaced the drive belt twice (at $65 a pop). I googled the issue and found it appeared to be a chronic problem, with no definite fixes. I called the manufacturer, got "that's a new one" and told them they might want to Google the problem as I had easily found several hundred folks with the same issue and little to no manufacturer support. After 3 buddies and I had tried to figure it out for weeks, I called a retired machinist friend to stare at it with me. He found the problem in about 1 minute. I bought a new drive roller with fresh, sharp knurling and the problem was fixed. Thx.

Love my 20+ year old PB-304. It's only been in the shop ONCE because I left crappie gas in it over the winter. It's definitely not a beast by modern standards but it has always gotten the job done and unlike modern blowers it has a curved end on the tube which I think all blowers should still have.

Thank You. I have the same blower 8010T purchase brand new and it is the best I ever seen. I did get a recall for the strap but nothing else. I am disable and can't rake leaves. I have AS with flareups but I don't really find it overly heavy for what is does truly powerful and not one issue. Red Armor premix is the only thing I ever used but now its getting pricey, it already was to be honest. I guess I should carry it back to the Echo dealer I purchased it from for a checkup. Homeowner and I only use it about 2 hours max about 8 times a year so it has low hours. Mine still looks brand new I keep it in our spare bedroom

Glad to know this, so if and when the problem appears, I know what to look for, and your right, its a beast of a blower, first time I heard one run in person I was like..."I WANT ONE" , I have typical type southeastern Texas type lawn, meaning lots of leaves and pine needles in my yard, and they are hard to blow off the yard, not with this one, yes, its a bit heavy, loud, you need hearing protection, but its fun to blow leaves with it, it blows them away :)

I worked on the adjust floor for CAT wheel tractor scrapers. We would fix issue in units after they came off the line. That department is not there any more because they figured it was better to just let the dealers fix the units when they got them or when the customer figured out something was wrong with it. The guy that trained me always felt like these were brand new units and just like you felt like when you got a new car it should be right when you drive off the lot. That is how he felt these units should be but CAT did not think that way. Guess it was a numbers game. If the problem did not show itself until after the warranty was up the customer paid to fix it

@james-rk5sd I said nothing about melting. Solder gets soft with higher temperatures. Vibration. Fatal combination. You will not find solder splices under the hood of automobiles. DoD, FAA, NASA, do not allow wires to be soldered to connectors.
Get a small brass tube from the hobby shop which just fits over the wires. Cut about 1/2” length. Fit heat shrink over one wire. Insert stripped wires into tube, overlap the strands. Crush in a crimp tool which folds the center in to pinch the strands. Move the heat shrink over, shrink.

Just an aside. The push connectors used on those wires have been problem children for decades. They are not designed for outdoor use contrary to what manufacturers may think. I first ran into them when servicing Honda Motorcycles in the late 1970's. The exposure to contaminants, rain, frost etc creates a corrosive environment and the plating on the metal used form a film. Additionally the connectors often use phosphor bronze and the constant vibration causes a loss of tension. When you combine the corrosion with loss of tension, it sits one up for intermittent failures. On the Hondas, the rider would be riding down the road and suddenly just lose power. That almost invariably tracked back to the wire to the magneto. The fix I used was like yours replace the wires, but also added dielectric grease to the connectors. This went a long ways to keeping out the moisture that caused the corrosion and once I made a repair using the grease, I had no further callbacks. Just my two cents and YMMV.

Hello, and thank you for your channel. It is so helpful!!!
I live in Western KY. Plez help me, I'm considering a PB 9010t. One of the local Echo retailers, who is also a Stihl dealer, suggested looking more into Stihl. Due to their experience with Echo warranty. This dealer said Echo will not honor anything fuel related. Their warranty claims especially for carburetor issues are being denied. When I asked why the denial , the statement is Echo believes the customer is responsible for proper quality of fuel and oil mixtures, and Echo will not honor fuel related warranty claims. This dealer went on to say they have had several carburetor claims with Stihl, with no problems being issued parts and even carburetor replacement.
What is your current experience??? Any warranty claim denials for fuel related problems? Any advise???
    Thank you for your time!!!

Can you explain how a break or discontinuity in the coil kill can kill the engine. Usually the kill switch grounds the coil primary circuit to kill the ignition. A discontinuity seems like it would make the machine continue to run even if the switch were activated. Maybe the kill line is grounding where it is pinchd in that little slot? Thanks for showing this!

    • @TheGreasyShopRag

Rooster, I've seen this a lot as well. The wire she replaced has compromised insulation and is grounding to the engine or bracket that holds it. I wish she would have shown that. The quick home owner fix is to just smear some liquid electrical tape over that wire near the holder. You are correct, a squished wire or one pinched in a plastic shroud is not grounding the primary side of the coil.

This is awesome. I have a PB8010 that is about 5 years old and I use a LOT on my 2 acres in the fall. Never had a lick of trouble with it yet, but when it does this I'll know where to look!

Use a 755 for regular size properties, but have the 9010 for very large properties. Looking forward to fall, the 9010 should do excellent cleaning up leaves.

Where you said "squishness," as you rotate the wire for the camera, the wire is showing inside the insulation. It's just a small dot, but enough to likely be the problem.

May I suggest perhaps using high flex wire and heat shrink and some other type of strain relief to make your own wires instead of using the crappy ones it came with? Those blade terminal connectors are cheap. Obviously not if a warranty thing but this looks like something that could be upgraded for less than the $1.99 and $2.99. I bought a Redmax in 2011 and was suspicious of the controls being on the blower outlet and opted for the model with the controls on the left however I am grateful for your videos and I have fixed so much of my stuff from ideas you share. Thank you!

The kill switch works by grounding the coil. You have a short to ground (the short block) on the wire from the coil.

Good catch, Echo makes good equipment and not a terrible fix once you figure out what the issue is. Cheers.

I live on a large lot with a lot of trees, mainly pine and oak, and have used both my Husqvarna 150BT and Husqvarna 580BTS leaf blowers a lot. The only thing I've ever had happened to them was a broken cut-off switch wire on the 150BT. I've been extremely pleased with both of them. I know the STIHL and the Echo blowers are the go to for the professionals, but the Husqvarnas have served me well.

Echo used to make great tools. I've had leaf blowers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, and string trimmers from Echo. The last couple of Echo products I bought are garbage. They both stopped working after a few uses. The 5 year warrantee isn't as good as it sounds. It takes me 45 minutes to drive to the nearest service shop. I drop it off and wait a week or two. If they determine its not a warrantee issue it will cost $80 to inspect it, and more than it cost to fix it. Plus I've spent 3 hours driving. If I wanted a disposable tool I would have bought a Homelite.

Our shop has sold over 200 8010s and 9010s and 910 Shindiawa's only real problem that we have seen with them is fuel filter pluging issues, mostly in commercial use. Have not seen any kill wire issues yet, but will keep it in mind. Commercial opperators just carry a fuel filter or two in truck and change it out when unit gets low on power or won't rev up. A few broken main frames from one gulf coarse that keeps droping them off carts is the only other issue we have seen with them.
