Way to go Valarie. Use to officiate discus few years ago. Watching her progress is nice to see the record finally broken.
Wish I'd had access to this kind of analysis during my 10,000+ discus throws in the 80's. Maxed out at about 48m, but was primarily a Decathlete with a throwing background.

I was in the audience when she was a Stanford student and won the 2015 Pac-12 championship held at UCLA Drake Stadium. She was not expected to win. Who knew we were looking at a future Olympic champion and American record holder? Graceful, fast, and powerful athletic movement.

I was always more into track/jumping events, so I never paid much attention to the field side until very recently. The speed and power generated in the (three?) throws are insane.

Normally I find technique analyses boring, but this was very good. In fact, I had a throwing session after watching this and tossed it 5 feet farther than I have all year! As I recall the Diamond League was planning to remove the discus throw for many of it's venues moving forward, which is a shame, particularly with the current talent pool for both the men and women. It was nice to hear it is was with virtually no wind, which makes it even more legit, as a favorable right quartering wind can add several feet to a 1kg discus throw.

Why do women only have to throw 1kg and not like males ?who have to throw 2 kg.men are literally throwing twice as much and still throwing further
National records should not be allowed in what is nothing more than a glorified practice. This isn't even an all-comers meet. This meet allows an athlete to make a few throws in basically a very low-key situation and it gets record status, BS. Its an insult to prior athletes and records.
Lightnin Hopkins it was a sanctioned usatf meet. Fact is, the record is even more impressive since she’s been able to stay in fantastic shape physically and technically and peak at the time of when the Olympics was originally scheduled. and to put up a performance like this when pretty much every US athlete hasn’t had the opportunity to compete most of the year.. not easy by any stretch. . We completely disagree and the record was a big positive during such a dismal year.

The record is legit, but I sorta get what you are saying. She has yet to record a really big throw in a diamond league or meet with serious world class talent, partly owing to covid. She will get her chance this summer, and I think she will medal in Tokyo, maybe gold.
