    This video is actually super helpful to me. I work for an insurance company and my main job is processing claims for durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs. I know exactly what you mean about certain parts not being covered, or only being covered once every six months or some other arbitrary length of time. Seeing how those kinds of policies affect actual wheelchair users is really helpful to me and hopefully will be something I can address with the policy makers at my company.

The main purpose of my job is to go the extra mile for the member since many Medicaid members lack the resources many of us take for granted. Hi Shane and Hannah,
    I’m a 14 year old, and only recently starting watching your videos.
    I’m absolutely blown away by both of your stories, I really enjoy watching both of you go through your lives, (i know this may seem funny to hear lol), one thing i like the most is the sense of humour, every video i watch, even if it is serious intended, always leaves me laughing or with a giant smile on my face.
    Shane looks like someone who is really easy to get along with, and Hannah is really pretty :).
    I don’t know whether this will get read, but if so then i want you to know that your videos make me happier than any other, especially when i’m stressed or not feeling very good, but your motivation is almost as if passed on to me.
    Thanks guys, Nathan.

    This is not my normal type of channel. And honestly i would be the type to shy a way a bit(id like to think in a non noticable way) from people with disabilities. But between Shane and some of SBSK videos, my eyes have been opened a bit. Now i wanna get to know them and treat them just like anyone else.

    • @kathaa-b6972
      @kathaa-b6972 5 лет назад +24

      I have social anxiety, so for me any interaction with anyone I don't know very well is awkward, or I fear it will be, and I try to shy away … and if someone is disabled, I have the feeling that the interaction is even more likely to be awkward - not because of the disabled person, but because of my own insecurities and nervousness to say or do something wrong or weird. So I definitely do shy away. Which is an explanation, not an excuse, so I'm trying to be better. I think Shane's videos are helping with that as well. :)

      And i see the one person deleted their commented.
      Thanks for understanding though and taking this the right way.

    My grandfather had ms and the only way I knew him was in a wheelchair. Wheelchairs really have come a long way from when he was alive. He's been gone for 20 years now. He had ms in his 20's and they gave him a short amount of time to live but he shocked the doctors by living until he was 68. I remember when I was younger riding around on his wheelchair, I miss him terribly. Thank you for sharing your story with everyone. Medical advances have come so far in 20 years and so has technology. I know people are still uncomfortable around disabled individuals and there's no reason to be at all. I'm hoping one day for a world where there will be no stigma against the disabled, races, religions and people will just be able to live the way want to as long they are not hurting anyone. You two are adorable!

    Lololol! The part where Hannah talks about the number of changes she has made to Shane’s “set-up”; each of which no doubt improving his state of well-being exponentially AND the fact that he met each one with “stubbornness & resistance”...and I’m over here like, “so precisely the same situation as with EVERY male/female romantic relationship since the beginning of time??!!” 🤣🤣
    Shane’s disability simply provides for a highly specified manner through which Hannah is able to prioritize the needed changes!! Sounds about right!!!👍🏻
    I love you two, and have been sharing your channel with a lot of my friends and coworkers, who have also been enjoying your content. Keep up the good work you guys!😘🤣💑🐭🐭

More towels, velcro, styrofoam, and velour just to make your chair unique. I'm surprised there are no Eagles logo or other Philly paraphernalia. As an Australian, I was shocked by these things not being covered by medical insurance..it honestly seems healthcare/health insurance is TOUGH in parts of the USA :( a lot of people here in Australia both abled and disabled rely on government medical subsidies and cheap basic healthcare and a pharmaceutical benefit scheme so we can afford treatment, medications and ongoing health care and be able to not have to choose between food/rent or your medical needs. I’m so sick I can barely walk most days and the doctors here are awful. They have no compassion and mock patients most the time. I don’t know why ppl think the USA is perfect Americans are suffering very much here. Here we have to choose between food and medicines because co-pays are so much. And forget going to the ER if you don’t have Ins you’ll go broke and homeless. The medical system here is thrashed pretty bad and so many are suffering cause of it. I know shanes pain too well, my old wheelchair was the most basic wheelchair someone could be given without headlights or all the other “special” features. My seat also has gel in it too which is annoying but thankfully i have a new wheelchair that’s like the tesla of wheelchairs, it’s really fancy at least to me it is.

    • @katphyre
      @katphyre 5 лет назад +3

      Mine is like his. Barebones, nothing even remotely fancy. And now it's being held together with black duct tape in a couple of places. (The counselor at the accommodations department at my daughter's college saw my chair and called their maintenence guy. Hahahahaha. Such nice people!)
      The worst though...it has a poltergeist and once in a while it will just stop and shift to lockout mode. I can't use the controls until I turn it off and then on and go through the mode button back to drive. It's takes about 30 seconds which isn't a lot of time if you're safely on the side of the road, but it did this in a crosswalk on a busy road one day. I've never been so afraid of dying.

    Would love for you to do a follow up video on the process of getting a wheelchair replaced. Willing to bet most people would assume you could do it without getting independent insurance verification that you are indeed still disabled and they would be WRONG. i love you guys so much, the love you have for each other shows in incredible ways. i am not physically disabled but have mental health issues that contribute to me believing nobody could ever "put up" with me because of it. seeing a healthy loving relationship between a disabled person and an able bodied is beautiful and makes me want to try love myself more, and not doubt my worth as much. i would never call any other disabled/mentally ill person a burden, because they are not, and i don't know why i'd do that to myself! i am only just realising this.

    Shane, how often do you feel like you need to get out of your chair? Or how long is too long to be in your chair? I’m a special ed teacher and I have a couple students in wheelchairs, they’re nonverbal though and I wonder if I need to give them more breaks out of their chairs throughout the day?

    • @smithy2389
      @smithy2389 5 лет назад +4

      Katie Hilton it depends on their age. When I was 11 I just wanted to be in my chair all day so I could move around with my friends. Physio Therapy and hydro are good excuses for getting out of the chair with productive time. That said soft play areas are good. Ideally you want to be getting them out of chair once a day for 20mins or more. Tummy crawling is good for the back.

    • @StraightZzzStudent

      I used to work with adults with disabilities and I would take each of them out twice. Once at the beginning of the day and then after lunch. A lot of wheelchair users like their chair and don't mind being in it but they should be taken out just like someone laying in bed at the hospital should get up for walks or should be rotated if they've been laying for a while.

    Hey Shane and Hannah, this was definitely a great video idea for anyone not in a wheelchair to help get some questions that they might of have had be answered. I'm in a manual wheelchair and can 100% relate to the seat cushion tearing and all the goop coming out of it, and I can also relate to the hassle of having to call the repair services and they tell me, "Umm, we need a written prescription from your doctor for the cushion and then we still have to wait to have it approved by your insurance provider."
    Ok, so it's Friday night, don't do anything you couldn't tell your grandmother about.

    It's amazing how many wheelchairs they have out there to fit each person. My best friend is in a wheelchair (electric as well) due to muscular dystrophy, and back when him and I would go shopping I'd put my purse on the back of his handles as well. And I completely understand about the tire situation.. he fights with his as well for new tires which is crazy because it's something they have to have. He gets a new chair about every 10 years and changes the color of his.. his is a lime green right now

    Hey Shane! Came across your channel randomly when surfing youtube. You are such an amazing person and I am in awe of you and Hannah's bond and her patience with your disability. I have a suggestion about your "Profile" button on your chair which I believe is a memory setting for different situations being in your chair which probably stores a certain number of settings for tilting and raising your chair with the touch of a button. Love your videos! I am so thankful for today's advancements in medicine like Spinraza that will help and others live out a longer life.

    I have an active wheelchair and I understand 100% problem with wheels. My front wheels are solid but the big with pushrims have to be with air. I wanted to change them the evening before Christmas Eve and my superpowers and a great sense of engineering didn't work out this time I punched both of the tires with the tyre levers... each of them 3 times! (oh yeah who is the boss?) No replacement tires at home and I was crying and laughing at the same time... It was a real Christmas miracle that one bicycle shop was opened the next day (we called 10 of them in my city) and they had tires that fitted, although they were 2 inches too long :D Now I have 3 pairs of spare tires just in case.

    Shane, the “Profile” setting on my wheelchair ( with the exact same controller), means that you can vary between inside and outside speed modules. Nice tour of your chair.
