This was the year of lipless cranks for me. I can't believe all the ways I caught fish on them; burned in shallow water, rip and pause like a jerkbait, slow rolled on bottom, bounced off rocks, etc. Just tonight I caught two keeper walleyes on back to back casts with the lipless. Good video keep it up.
Great video! One tweak I like to make to my lipless cranks is I take some wire cutters and cut off the front most hook on the front treble. So it’s got 5 hooks instead of 6. I find that it makes it wayyy less likely to snag and doesn’t seem to affect my hookup ratio. Since when it’s moving that front hook hugs up to the body, I just eliminate the hook that’s hanging down pointing forward.
I have been doing the same soon after they came to the market back in the day. Its my go-to crank lure and 90% are dressed with 5 hook; 2 front and 3 back. Won tourney big fish at Okeechobee lake a 1/2 OZ Fire Tiger Rattle Trap on that very cold day (40°)... Good mention bro. 👍
Really enjoy the subjects you discuss that are things one just doesn't think about when it comes to lures. Some things are so simple that I have to wonder how I didn't think of it before. I'm starting the MLF BFL's this season as a co and learning from your videos, I have had come to realize I didn't know half what I thought I did about fishing. It's made it a great journey this last year adding to what I thought I knew. I feel genuinely that you have added so much to my game and have increased my potential to fulfill my dream of competitive bass fishing. Thank you.
I just saw this video. I live in Texas and only fish ponds from shore. You are correct as to how effective they can be. I use the stop and go retrieve. I never tried the yo yo method but will try it in the future. I appreciate what you do.
The EWG Mustad triple grips are an absolute must change I make on most every lipless and jerkbait bait I have. I have noticed a significant difference in getting those fish into the boat and not losing them. The moderate to slow bend rod action is also a must as it reduces the chances of you from pulling the bait out of the fish's mouth. I built my own lamiglass composite rod specifically for this type of fishing and the first time I took it out was in a local SC tournament in February. Had 24 lbs of fish with a 8.24 lmb (second big fish of tournament) using that rod. Great video, it does confirm a lot of what I already do, so great job.
Before I watch this I'll comment one of my favorite ways to work a lipless is like a jig. Let it hit the bottom and soft lift ups. An awesome retrieve. I have a special way of using it. Floro over mono. A medium heavy 7 6 with fast action and high speed reel. I keep my rod high for sensitivity and some 5 and 6 lb bass have hit like blue gills. I kill it that way and barely lose any fish. You'd have to check my video to see my unique way. Plus lv500 over Rattle trap 7 out of 10 times.
I just ordered two BASS Hats. Great video as always. I think we (fishermen) get way too complicated and use too much "Special gear". I need to slow down sometimes and NOT over think lure planning in the overall strategy. Lipless crankbaits, tubes, and plastic worms would probably fill your limit each trip out.
A great edge bait! Love them on a flat. I also use the old Brand Name trap as a sound stimulate to activate a bite! When pulling up the my area, I may be planning to fish a rig, flip, spinner bait or anything. I throw a trap at least once or twice then start my planned technique. I seem to get more bites!
I was thinking it was close to 800 LOL. Another great video Ty. Thanks for all the tips. I think an on the water lipless video would be cool. Helps me solidify what you're talking about with yo-yoing and reeling and stopping. Keep up the great work man!
Thanks as always. I was literally fishing a lipless today on the rip raff rock bank by the dam on my lake. Normally does well. Unfortunately I only got pike today but I will definitely be incorporating your tips
Ripping a lipless through grass in the summer, and yo yo retrieve in the spring has been killer for me the past couple years. Make sure you have great hooks, and never give up 👍 👌
Lipless are my go-to if I'm exploring, that or a paddle tail swimbait on a weighted hook. ratlin vibes are my favorite, either the bass color or shad imitation. Red eye shad works well too from Strike king, and rattle traps. shoot ive done well on ozark trail lipless. if they are super finnicky i switch to minnow style pencil suspending baits.
I’m with you dude. Love this guy but I was literally just using a lipless today and guess what…… I was doing wrong. I caught pike here in Michigan but no Bass.

I stayed at a house on Watts Bar while fishing an Open on Chick. I like that lake. Hey man I would really love to get you a bass hat. I need to get your address somehow
@@BassFishingHQ Just sent another one to your FB messenger , Watts Bar can be tough at times but its only 30 minutes from me so I roll the dice on a skunk lol
Nice video. I like to fish the spro Aruku shad similar to the way a blade bait or a spoon is worked (vertically). I have had quite a bit of success fishing it around suspended fish in deep, cold water.
I need to get my confidence back with the lipless. I usually have them in the boat but always choose something else to throw. Hard to beat a black and chrome lipless for busting whites though. Something I do with trebles is set my drag looser than needed for the line. Smaller the treble looser the drag. My number of lost fish went way down when I started giving them more freedom to pull drag if they needed to run especially close to the boat. When I see people crying about losing fish on trebles I look them square in the face and say "loosen your drag because it's a little different from that big single jig hook". And I also mention the more parabolic rod to them and the importance of line stretch. Yo Zuri Top Knot in 12# is my line of choice for most chunking and reeling and even for jerks due to its smaller than standard diameter plus it does have stretch.
Tyler you never talk about how you attach the lures to your line? Do you use snap swivels or not? What baits do you or do you not use a swivel? Last what knots do you use when attaching your lures to your line? Love your channel bro!!
I should tell you the type of water I fish. I live in Yakima county in Washington state so ponds, rivers, and smaller lakes are my types of water I have to fish. The Columbia river is 80 miles away so I don’t fish it a lot and I fish from the bank. Thank Tyler
Another great straight to the point video. I have some good days mostly late fall & winter vertically jigging or yo-yo. I have found the rattle rap has a better action or fall for this style. Do you have any thoughts on when to throw blade bait vs. 'rattle trap' on deep water bass with rocks? What is your cut-off water temp for winter fishing? Keep em coming!
Thats a great point. I used to yo yo a lipless crankbait a lot to catch fish in cold water, I tend to start using the blade bait more when the water temp is below 50. However I do think that these are interchangeable at times. As far as cut off. I love the lipless but after a while the bite started to die off in the body of waters I fished so I went to a Glo-Pro soft body lipless that I got in a monthly subscription tackle box and it obviously it was silent and it destroyed the fish the rest of that year and the following year in those bodies of water.
I fish lake Seminole, I have a very hard time fishing a lipless in the grass, it constantly gets bogged down no matter how hard I try to keep it out of the grass, most of the time I just give up and tie on a chatter bait.
Tyler, one thing I think you forgot to mention as an important point....was color. The importance of fishing a bright colored, dark or red colored lipless in dingy or muddy water. The importance of fishing a chrome, silver, gold or other reflective/flashy lipless in sunny conditions. As well as why red seems to work well in spring, better than in the fall. I think it is just the nature of the subject matter combined with the number of folks attempting to create content. I couldn't tell you how many friggin Inu-Rig vids have I watched in the last two weeks. Don't let it get you down, Tyler. I think you are putting out some excellent content that is very well produced. Your channel quickly leapt to the top of the my favorites. Keep it up brother!
@Nathan Cross I REALLY appreciate your kind words man. It means more than you know. Like you said there is a ton of overlap but I have never copied someone’s video, honestly was dumbfounded when I heard that. Again thanks so much Nathan.
Thanks brother!
I caught my best snook on a lipless crankbait. 41 inches and easily 25 pounds. They aren't just for bass.
I know you don't promote 6thsense but that flat 75x gets bit a lot... & there paint schemes & hooks are ready to throw outa the box.. My problem is my home lake is stumps galore & losing them can get pricey
I fish from the bank most the time and the lipless is my #1 comfort lure I’m almost guarantee to get a bite
when you say "parabolic" what action is that?
Usually rods that are parabolic have a “moderate” action
6th Sense has a great one!!
I have added a spinner to a rattle trap for the last 30 years, I have caught thousands of bass on this lure
I use a blue silver lipless to start. I'll let it hit bottom then reel it up let it sink change the speed and pay attention of what depth then fish there. All year long I catch vicious fishes.
I have an original Rat-L-Trap in Chrome/Blue tied on just about every time I go. All year.
I tried some other variations/brands... but the original still works for me. One rod is set up for this bait pretty much 365 days a year.
I was just thinking about that chrome blue today. The joker catches them everywhere no matter what type of baitfish live in your lake
@@BassFishingHQ yeah, the others are great too... but I seem to default to the old reliable, lol.
The Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap isn't the original lipless crankbait, the Cotton Cordell Spot is.
@@AC-mr7is well, may be, but I was saying the original chrome blue rattle trap is what I have tied on... the 1st color.
Interestingly, I was taken to Cotton's house as a young boy, wide eyed about fishing...I left with a couple of Cotton's hand carved wood lures (thank goodness I still have them) and a signed Cotton rod - a 5 footer, lol.. that was the way they were back then.
I got a few Spots but lots more Rattle traps around.
@JesusLVR OH Ok gotcha. Can't go wrong with chrome/blue, that color slays bass for me aswell.
What lipless crankbaits stands up on bottom?
Aruku shad
Bring back the Black Kryptec Camo hat!!!🙏
I've never had a great day of fishing. I live in ohio and I don't know where the great spots are. I fish from the bank. Maybe I can try this lure next time I fish.
Ohio can be difficult but it has some good fishing. Some of the creeks around here are great for smallmouth and some neighborhood ponds can be great for largemouth
@@BassFishingHQ I never caught a smallmouth bass before. So maybe I can catch them in the local creeks
@@sasquatchsam987
What part of Ohio do you fish?
I'm in northeast Ohio, 15 to 20 min from Cleve
@@sasquatchsam987 I live just East of Cincinnati and if you've never caught a smallmouth I'll help you catch one for sure!
Just scored a free Strike King Red Eyed Shad from Dick's today. Can't wait to try this whole lipless crankbait thing!
Awesome video, man. I thoroughly enjoy your content. You're a hell of an angler. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Joshua, I really appreciate the kind words!
2:12 which one is that?
That is a Strike King Red Eye Shad that has lost it eyes from a couple of fish lol
@@BassFishingHQ I thought so! Must be either an older or newer style bluegill color cause I have that same one but it looks different
First keep doing your thing LEGEND.
Thanks man, I really appreciate the support and for the comments. You rock!
Thats one of my favorite baits to catch some bigguns with. It does wonders
You are absolutely right! It catches the big girls and tons of them
One word EVERGREEN
Eff that noise, everyone in MN is going hard finesse and I've been pulling em in power fishing cranks, squarebills and lipless. All about being different!
Blades are good for a ton of baits
Blade bait vs lipless?
the video could have been 7 minutes if you just said lipless
😂 that’s the truth
Uncle Todd !! What you call me? 😁
Wats your favorite lipless crank bait?
There are really so many good ones. The original Rat-L-trap still gets it done and I am also a big fan of the Strike King Redeye Shad
I’ve used the remove the rear hook and add a spinner trick a bunch. It doesn’t work so you shouldn’t ever try it nor should anyone else reading this comment 😂
Hahaha I sense some sarcasm in this :)
👍
I want to see how you actually fish it, not just talk about.
This was my best year on the lipless. Burn it and let it pause.
I never watch videos that start with "STOP"
These videos are shallow just fish how you want to fish. There is no right or wrong.
This dude is annoying. He jabbers way to much. I can never watch more then a min. or two
Why comment just leave!
Pretty much copying fish the moment.... holy crap
Explain to me how? I don’t copy any one
@@BassFishingHQ titles, thumbnail pics, extremely similar to fish the moment
There's only so much to talk about on a lure, of course there's going to be overlap .
Let me guess. Your personal preference is a fast retrieve in the summer and a slow retrieve In the winter?
