Alex being overlooked wasn’t his wardrobe. It was partly the spectacular skills of his band mates, and while Neil is rightly recognized broadly as being among the greatest ever, Geddy got attention as being the frontman with the “rather unique” voice. Even Alex himself said he considered his playing skills more suited to the typical role of the rhythm guitar but that was not their band…plus he can play the shit out of everything. The rock press ignored Rush for so long because they were anachronistic as progressive artists in the then-emerging punk era. The fan base was disparaged as geeks. And since the highly influential “Rolling Stone” view of current music was always how it served the ongoing cultural revolution, acts of rebellion, and general defiance of authority, a band that wrote fantasy inspired by Ayn Rand had to be ignored, no matter how skillful the musicians themselves were. That rag’s review of A Farewell to Kings, which is the album on which this song debuted, was totally dismissive, saying it was an album “that should have never been made.” Alex was overlooked, and the entire band was often deliberately overlooked by everyone except their fans. Thank goodness all those three men ever cared about and needed were their families, their music, their fans, and each other. That’s why we could not love them more. I grieve that it’s over, but I still have tears of joy because it happened and that is renewed every time someone like you discovers them and shares it here.
Thank God the Ayn Rand period was relatively short-lived. what a hack. It's hard to believe somebody as obviously intelligent as Neil was taken in by that talentless charlatan. have you ever tried to read one of her books? Please give that lady an editor lol
The Rock Press may have ignored them but in the 80s the radio did not. The MUSICIAN Press also regularly had ALL THREE of them in the top 3 in reader polls.
@@mattphillips538 Yeah, by the time the 80s rolled around they had gained a strong following from constant touring and earned wider respect, plus they moved away from long-form prog compositions to more “radio friendly” songs without losing the hard edge they had from the start. From Permanent Waves through Power Windows, they enjoyed modest radio hits with Moving Pictures giving them two of their biggest in Tom Sawyer and Limelight. But they never changed their highest priority of constantly playing before fans until Neil’s life took its hits.
@@mattphillips538 Yes, they put effort into early video to help and no doubt MTV was a huge boost for them. I never really saw those until much later because MTV wasn't on cable where I was at the time. Their concert videos-that is, what they showed on stage while performing-were also better than most bands.
Lol. I fell in love with Rush because of their fashion sense. Lol. You should check out Dave and Taylor induct them into the RRHOF. Dave talks about the kimono wore for 2112. The whole thing up to and through Alex's speech is worth watching on repeat. Blah blah blah
Your comment on Alex's dressing style is pertinent! I think It makes sense... He seems not to care about his outfits 🤣 That's been said...He's a Virtuoso!! One of a kind!! And the song is awesome 😍
This is my favourite video of this song. They really did some cool editing. Closer to the Heart is off the Farewell to Kings album from 1977. Hey, I like Alex in his leather pants! I used to have a couple pairs of those back in the day. Yes, they are kind of dorky but that is what makes them so lovable especially when you are a bit dorky yourself. 😀
Nice Canadian boys. The 70s were the greatest time for music, musicians and to be alive.this song came out in 77 these are the bands I saw in 77, Queen, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Supertramp, Yes, Bob Seger, Greatful Dead, Billy Joel and Rush. Total cost for all shows was $97.00 and all were great seats.
Yeah, I remember those days when I struggled to come with even that much. Early 80s I saw The Police during their Synchronicity tour for $13.50. By the time I had worked enough to have money, I still couldn’t afford concerts.
Oh I agree a hundred percent they were total dorks! Lol! In the second half of the clockwork Angels tour Alex actually wore a suit with a tie!!! I mean reading in their hotel room after the show need I say more. 😂
When they were in their kimono stage Rush toured with UFO, and they nailed a pair of slippers to the stage to taunt Geddy. They said they needed slippers to go with their robes.🤣👍🔥🤘🏻🎧
😚 Watching you watch this was fun! 😂 I hated their "MTV" look! 🙄 Don't get me started about the "Bad Haircut Tour" 🤣 which lasted about 10 yrs. 🤭 The Geddy ponytail! Hey Justin! Thanks for doing my request! I knew you’d dig it!! This so one of my favorite video compilations! This was a video promo for their Live Different Stages album in 1998. Original released on Farewell To Kings in 1977 and co-written by Peter Talbot. It just shows how consistent they were thru the years! As far as the outfits.. I get it, but it’s part of their charm!! The leather pants were HOT in the 80’s David Lee Roth and Motley Crue were often seen in leather pants with no asses in them!! LOL!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
They tried to have a unified "look" during 2112 with the kimono's. But it just became whatever wear from 1977 onward.. It really never was about their onstage "look". It was about the music. When the backdrop was brought in that made the show much more. Geddy oversaw a lot of the video that was on the backdrop which was taken from content in the official video releases. Some of it had to be created though. There's was a team. They had a bit of a new wave look during Signals, GUP, Power Windows. Alex looked like someone from the band Duran Duran.
Wow! I hadn't seen that video before. I'd seen so many performances of that song, my first time seeing them being the release of that album, but it was VERY cool seeing all those clips from over the years cut together.
Cool, I've never seen this video before. This is the only song (that I'm aware of, at least from that era) where Neil collaborated on the lyrics. Also, I'd heard that the little bells interlude after the first verse were inserted so Alex could swap out his acoustic for an electric (on stage, of course). Great review, thanks.
The 1st time I saw them in 78, they were wearing those Chinese robes like 2112. they just seem larger than life…, and they were. They made fun of their appearances over the years in the later shows…, was pretty funny. They just wanted to entertain their audiences…, and no one did it better.

Love that video! Yes... the dorkiness is endearing to the fans. They laugh at themselves about their lack of fashion sense. They just don't care and have me very cared about look. I agree with you, it's one thing that kept them from being bigger, but it's so cool they never did what they didn't want to do with music or fashion. They're just who they are :)
Personally that dorkiness made me love them harder. Early on, it was Alex who really most looked the part with his straight long blonde hair and jeans, but he started wearing jackets, mmm probably early 80s and cut his hair (soupbowl!) when he started losing his hair. P.S. I honestly think Alex did that on purpose. He was always the "card"/funnyman of the band, so he probably had that look just for comedic effect.
most people back then didn't really know what musicians look like, I mean if you didn't have the album with any pictures of them, how would they? This was way before MTV or RUclips lol

They joke about their kimono phase, or Geddy jokes about his "Davey Crocket Racoon Hat" hair in the 80's. Regardless, they're a great band and truth be told, can't be fully appreciated unless you have seen them live... video's don't do them justice. I understand your opinion about looks... but what does a rock star really look like.. I would submit that when you are an inspiration to many rock stars to come along... when you have the talent on instruments RUSH has.. when you have bank accounts very large like these guys... and when you are in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame... When Dave Grohl and Eddie Van Halen call Alex Lifeson a Guitar God..... you must be looking ok ? ha.. anyhow I enjoy your videos and opinion.. and as for Rush.. they have meant so much to me over the years... 40 years basiclly all together....They look just fine to me... Long Live Rush !!!!
Their fashion sense was always a bit off. Even later years you can tell the era that influenced their look, but it was just not quite right. It wasn't until their last years they settled into a look that worked...they finally grew into their awkwardness.
Ha ha, both Alex and Neil never really looked like rock stars, even in their long hair days. Geddy is the only one that pulls it off. They joke about how they usually misfired on their look through the years..
Google rock stars who wore leather pants on stage ...there literally hundreds of famous artist wearing leather pants including Robert Plant...just saying.
alex doesn't know how to where them and look like a rockstar, Plant does.. thats the difference. Alex only knows how to look like a dork. Just cause you wear something someone else wears doesn't mean you have style.
6:52 Look like dorks. ROFL. Fair point . So funny. They didn’t do drugs or band sex either. So acted like dorks too 😅. No kid looks at alex and wants to be him rofl 😂😂. It’s a good point. Haven’t heard that said. But fair. Lol
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ thats not what im saying wise guy. Never seen a ‘rock star’ wear leather pants and look less like a rock star. Baggy leather pants. He looks like a dad up there, not like a guitar player for a huge rock band. Guy looks like hes having a mid life crisis and nobody is around him to at least guide him on what looks good/flattering or not.
I guess if they would have been going on one night stands ( which they didn't) they could have worn the blouse or top from the last girl from the night before .. as per ROBERT PLANT.. 😅 just saying.. 😅
Isn't this one of the things that separates Rush from most other rock bands? That they were not the typical intoxicated "wreck the hotel" Or "fuck every girl I can get on tour" type of people, even when very young, apparently. That and they were humble and nice family men. And did a lot of charity work as well. Especially when looking at Neil Peart.
@@scottzappa9314 yes that is precisely what I meant by my comment. over 40 years together without any problems. except for the tragedy of Neil's first wife's and daughter's loss of lives within a year of each other.. RIP NEIL 🙏

🧖🧖🏻♂️🧖🏻
1977
funny when I was a kid in 70s the music mattered more than the look, weird perpective.
@@JustinPanariello I don't think he looks like dork...thats my opinion.. I just know he kicks ass on the ax...
6:52 Look like dorks. ROFL. Fair point . So funny. They didn’t do drugs or band sex either. So acted like dorks too 😅. No kid looks at alex and wants to be him rofl 😂😂. It’s a good point. Haven’t heard that said. But fair. Lol
Wow you are right, never seen anybody in rock or even in pop music for that fact wear leather pants.
the Percy side...
RIP NEIL 🙏
@@cecillegravelle2590 Yes sir, Neil went though far too much for one man.
this band was not overlooked
zep never had the career rush did
Never heard this? 😕
