  • What is amoxicillin used for
Amoxicillin is a popular antibiotic used in many countries and it is popular because it is a broad-spectrum antibiotic meaning it can get rid of a wide range of bacteria. It belongs to the group of drugs called penicillins
It is used for a wide range of infections such as chest infections, ear infections, dental abscesses, throat infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, ear infections, skin and urinary tract infections
Children are normally prescribed the suspension and the dose is based on the child’s weight. Amoxicillin is taken every eight hours in adults and children, so within 24 hours, you are meant to take it three times.
    Common or very common
Diarrhoea; hypersensitivity; nausea; skin reactions; thrombocytopenia; vomiting
The most important side-effect of penicillin including amoxicillin is hypersensitivity which causes rashes and anaphylaxis and can be fatal. Allergic reactions to penicillins occur in 1-10% of exposed individuals; If you have a history of atopic allergy (e.g. asthma, eczema, hay fever) then you are at a higher risk of anaphylactic reactions to penicillins. If you have a history of anaphylaxis, urticaria, or rash immediately after penicillin administration then you are at risk of immediate hypersensitivity to penicillin; It is advised that if you fall in this category you don’t take amoxicillin.
