The plane had gone missing the morning of June 10 after departing from the capital city of Lilongwe, and was found in the hilly terrain near the city of Mzuzu after a 24 hour search. Chakwera said that everyone on board died immediately upon impact.
Chilima had just returned from the 2024 South Korea-Africa Summit. He was in his second term as vice president after serving from 2014-2019 under former President Peter Mutharika.
