Hi, Chika. I'm one of your Korean viewer and I'm glad to see that you mentioned both sides of the history regarding this island. Every history has both good and bad sides inevitably and I think we could make better history in future by pondering upon those aspects all together. By the way, as a student who studies both English and Japanese, your videos are very informative and helpful to me and please keep up with your good work! And again thank you!

JH Ryu I'm so happy you commented! I completely agree with you on making better history in the future by understanding the different perspectives to all of the things that have happened in the past. If we keep thinking that only one story is right, the conflict is never going to end. I wish the countries would start to see that someday, I know we do at the individual level :)

What do you mean you're Japanese president always try to a void comfort women and other things such as nanjing massacre in China but you know what no Koreans and chinese will never forgive unless Japanese nations is truly sorry and if you're nation is not sorry and try to attack Korea (North and South) Japan will cease to exist because of their military might and btw Don't mess with China or else their will be a probabilty of your countries extinction.

By the way, there are tours that take you on the island. Access is quite limited though (I believe there are only 3 small areas where tourists are allowed) and you can't freely walk around, but you get a closer look. Unfortunately when I went, a typhoon had hit a few days before and they were only allowing people in one of the areas, so instead we decided to take a boat tour that went around Gunkanjima giving us a 360* view.

Great video, Chica; thanks for sharing your experience, and also for providing a balanced perspective on Battleship Island's history. One of the things that struck me most deeply while watching it is the fact that nature erodes the works of man very quickly once people are no longer around to maintain their physical integrity. Anyway, both the island and Nagasaki are interesting places, and this video makes me want to visit them all the more. As a Japanese person might say to you at the end of the day: "thank you for your hard work" (I also hope that your books are selling well, because you deserve to be highly successful! :)

Robert Ryan I know!! I can't believe that just after 50 years a city can look like this! Granted, all of the waves crashing against it and all of the sea breeze is probably the major factor in such fast erosion. Thanks for the お疲れ様 :) and the little bit about my book. That means a lot!

Hahaha, when Chika first mentions getting on the boat, I saw the cruise ship and my eye widens...followed by a slight frown as she board the small boat xD
On another hand the island is awesome! Although it should have been called Koubojima, since it looks more like an aircraft carrier from top-down.

I was a bit reluctant about uploading this video because of all of the conflict regarding the "truth" about what happened at Gunkanjima, but realizing that it's all truth from a different point of view, I decided to share both sides of the story. If you guys like to know more about Hashima/Gunkanjima Island from the Korean perspective (which Chika mentioned a bit ^^), you can check out the latest episode from the Korean variety show "Infinity Challenge" eps 445 (or 97 if you watch it on DramaFever). The focus on Hashima Island starts from about 30 mins into the episode.
I, too, believe that there are always 2 sides to every story and am just sharing just to let people know what goes on around us.
FYI I'm neither Korean nor Japanese, just someone who loves the culture from those 2 beautiful countries and love sharing my knowledge about them. Have a good day! :)

I had no idea about this island! It sounded like an amazing place to be at the time. It's really cool that the people there were living with more luxuries than the bankers! It's really sad about the miners, though. I kind of thought it'd be that way after hearing it was coal.

Thanks for the background. I was going to ask about the working conditions in the mine, since even in the US the coal mines of that time were not the safest. On the flip side, if you could afford luxuries, that means you had plenty of food to eat, ie: a large assortment of side dishes to go with rice.

I was very glad to hear you say that studying the history gave you new things to think about. That's true of a lot of history. But history doesn't "come alive" for a lot of people until they "touch" it so to speak. That's why it's important to visit these places. I plan on visiting Egypt, Greece, and Israel (and Japan!) so I can "touch" the history I've read so much about. Lucky you you're already there! It is just what talking by a photograph and the explanation of this animation. In this island, much coal was mined before a war. After the war many Japanese worked diligently. There was much Japanese life in the house which became the ruins. Because it was the times of the oil after high growth of the economy, it was with remains with a state of the life being left. It became the significant historic spot which showed an initial stage of industrial development of Japan.

Japanagos(ジャパナゴス) Now there is a park, all over. Would be great if they cleaned up some of the buildings, and also built a small shrine with a garden and reflection pool

Japanagos(ジャパナゴス) Could you imagine walking among the ruins of this once living city, hushed by the deafening silence of the past? I'm sure if you listened carefully you would hear the lives of people on the streets, the laughter of students in the halls of the now empty schools, and the conversations at the diner tables of the families who departed long ago. Stuck between the past and the present, you walk down the once busy streets as an eerie chill travels down your spine and goose pumps rise on your skin.

Thanks for some of the old photos of the island. Do you have any photos of the shafts and loading facilities? I will not wade into the argument but I will say, regardless who is in the coal mine, it is an absolutely horrible job. Coal gas explosions and black lung are just a few things that could kill you slowly or quickly. Coal mines are dark ,wet, cold and deadly. I live in an area where coal mining was huge and many died. If anyone tells you how great it was to work in a mine they are either lying or nuts. Go for a tour into an old mine, turn off the lamp and listen to the water trickling and the creaking ( tommy knockers) you will quickly change your mind.

You are probably talking about late 20th century.
Life was tougher in the first half.
Wage slavery, racism, famine, war, poverty and crimes.
      nobody’s life was easy.
Coal mining surely was a risky job but it was at least high income.

@@KD-ee3vq Nanaimo mine explosion occurred on May 3, 1887, in Nanaimo, British Columbia killing 150 miners . Wages and conditions were very poor. This all worked toward unions and strike for better wages and safety. Much, much later did the job pay at least decent wages.

This island played a very significant role in Japan's industrialization and helped Japan's economy grow during the Meji period. And the Chinese and Koreans died in harsh environment. Then large amount of what Japan is now is built on the blood of these people.
Anyway, right now, it is a very important historical location.
Teach the history truthfully so that we don't repeat it.

Give the lady a break, she is not an historian to feed us some history facts about the island, this are for tourists interested in nagasaki. All this hate for someone who has nothing to do with the war of the past is useless. She is trying to enjoy her trip.
