Nice reaction, I'm British and played Basketball for my school team and was the captain of my team, but it was nowhere near the level of High School Basketball in America. In regards to your question as to why Magic spoke trash to Mike for the first time, I think it's kinda obvious. They were all on the same team for the Olympics representing the USA. Sure they had games against each other, but it was still the same team, going for the same single goal. However, even in this Jordan is always so competitive when pushed. I'm sure they had banter all the time with each other as well
There's actually another guy, Corey Benjamin, who while a rookie on the Bulls talked trash that he could easily beat Michael Jordan one on one after Mike had retired. Well that news made it's way to Michael. So he stopped in Chicago, went to the Bulls practice and played this guy one on one. The video of them playing is on RUclips.
Magic and MJ were / are really good friends. Magic started talking trash to him to push his buttons because it was MJ. It seemed to be more friendly trash talk than anything, but he wanted to see what MJ would do. Most of the Dream Team have gone on record saying those practices were some of the best basketball they have ever played.
Jordan is a straight killer, you want to win you want him on your squad and if he's not performing just talk some shit lol players today would start crying or blame the coach
I can’t help but wonder if the trash talking lit a fire in him, and it reminded him of his youth losing to his brother Larry. I’d love know if there’s a psychological link between those experiences.
I've heard this story from Magic before about the only time he talked trash was to Michael Jordan during one of their Dream Team practices in the summer of 1992. You raise some good points on it but I have also heard Magic say that when he first met Bird during their college days he wanted to be friends with Bird and went up to him to say hello but Bird gave him the cold shoulder and wanted no part of it. So Magic said ok then I don't want to be friends with you either then. 😆 So Magic said they never talked to each other until like 6 years later during a commercial that Bird and Magic agreed to do together for Converse shoes in like 1985 I think. They shot that commercial at Birds house or at Bird's parents house and after they finished shooting Bird invited Magic up to the house for lunch that his mom had made for them. Magic didn't know how tensions would be for the commercial or how it would be going up to the house to eat lunch but when Bird and Magic sat done to eat Bird asked his mom .." Do you want to tell him mom or should I ? ". Magic heard that and was a little confused at first but then Bird said to Magic...." you are my mom's favorite player. " After that Magic and Bird and his mom started laughing and the tensions dropped and ever since then Bird and Magic became friendly. I say that to point out that maybe it is true that Magic never really trashed talked to Bird before that because they just didn't speak. Bird later said the reason he refused to speak and be friends with Magic before they shot that commercial wasn't because he disliked and didn't respect Magic. It was because Bird really did respect Magic as a basketball player and Bird always wanted to keep an edge over his opponents. That's how Bird always was with any opponent growing up playing basketball. It's a cool story that I first saw in a documentary that came out a few years ago about Magic and Bird's relationship and history as rivals and friends. It's a cool film. As far as trash talking MJ in 92 you have to remember that Bird had been plauged with back injuries the last few years prior to 92 and had just announced his retirement that year but right before the practices for the Dream Team started and Magic had been forced to retire too early the year before after losing to MJ and his Bulls in the 1991 NBA Finals because of testing positive for HIV. Magic was only 32 years old at this time and probably could have kept playing at a very high level in the NBA for the next 5 years or so because he came back just to play in the 1992 NBA all-star game after he retired and had a great performance being named the MVP and proving he was still the old Magic. MJ had just come off back to back NBA Championship wins in 91 and 92 and everyone could feel that the torch had been passed from Magic and Bird dominating in the 1980's over to Michael in the 1990's. During the practices with the Dream Team I think Magic knew this but wanted to remind MJ that he was still there , still around , and still Magic. Or try to at least. 😆 In the end as the story or legend goes.....MJ forced Bird and Magic to understand that their time was over and their was a new sherrif in town.
To answer your question, I would guess Magic chose to talk trash to MJ because he didn't expect MJ to respond that way, so it was an attempt to have fun like, "Hey this is the one time I can talk trash to Mike and he won't care." haha. They had a lot of fun on the Dream Team, so I think he expected MJ to take it as fun talk, and mouth back to Magic a little; rather than throw it in his face through playing hahaha.
Magic chooses to do that because he wanted it to be known that he was the top Alpha Dog on the Dream Team, but in actuality he wasn't. Jordan had passed him as the top dog in the league. It was an ego thing.
9:58 If Darrick Martin kept his mouth shut, the Bulls would have had 71 wins in the 1995-1996 regular season instead of 72, and the Bulls would have gone down in history losing to both the Raptors and the Grizzlies that were brand new teams in the year when the Bulls made their legendary 70+ regular game wins.
That next year in 97 the Bulls won 69 games. One short. Still great though. I think they won 62 games in Jordan's last year in 98. They only lost 43 games in 3 regular seasons. 😮

After the KG/JR Rider story, I love the “Shut up, you little B*tch!!” MJ was savage!
Because it was Magic and Birds league. Jordan was the new giy taking over....Magic was trying to hang on to control!
mj stared down coaches man thats feared
I enjoyed watching this with you. Memories shared - so much better.
Love when KG tell the story laughing all the time
Jordan is a straight killer, you want to win you want him on your squad and if he's not performing just talk some shit lol players today would start crying or blame the coach
Magic did it because he still wanted to prove he was still the man. And because his team was winning. It sort of backfired 🤣
I can’t help but wonder if the trash talking lit a fire in him, and it reminded him of his youth losing to his brother Larry.
I’d love know if there’s a psychological link between those experiences.
Your question about Magic. He was never challenged like he was with Jordan. He needed to know That Jordan.

MJ 🐐 so he can trash talk
♒Me and MJ! February 17th!! ♒
Understand him and Jordan was competing against each other the whole trip
Wasn’t first time Magic was talking trash. It was first time he trash talked MJ tho. But he was trashing talking other players throughout his career.
Magic chooses to do that because he wanted it to be known that he was the top Alpha Dog on the Dream Team, but in actuality he wasn't. Jordan had passed him as the top dog in the league. It was an ego thing.
MJ teammates said he made their practices very difficult.

Everyone says Lebron is better than Jordan. But Lebron isn’t even better than Kobe or Tim Duncan. Let alone the GOAT 💯
Everyone doesn’t say that, only LeBalco fans.
How is MJ the ultimate trash talker when he said he learned how to trash talk from Larry Bird. Bird is the #1 player of all time and the best talker.
So you think students can never surpass their teachers? Trash talking is purely subjective, get Bird's duck out your ass and start using your head lol
Ummm. Not even close. MJ is the GOAT.
He learned TO TALK from Larry but he didn’t learn how to talk and what to say.
Sir, delusion lol
Bird swept Jordan in back to back years in the playoffs...Nuff said!
@@bronsongetseven7326 It was 5 Hall of Famers versus one... Jordan was still the best player in the series. Nuff said!
