  • What Makes a Good Anesthesiologist?
When people ask me whether they should become an anesthesiologist, they are surprised when I ask them if they have what it takes. It may sound pretentious, but the question is necessary. This is because like many people, they have only a vague idea of what an anesthesiologist actually does, and what is required of them.
So, I’ve put together a list of 5 character traits that are essential in order to become a competent anesthesiologist. And to be one, you need all five!
Even if just one of these is missing, then I don’t think Anesthesiology is for you!!
The decision to become an Anesthesiologist is not a decision to be taken lightly, here’s why in the video!

The anesthesiologist is the right ventricle of the OR. Quiet and important. While the surgeon may be big and boisterous like the left ventricle, when he fails, there are many things that can be done to fix the situation. Inotropes, filling etc will help the failing left ventricle. However, if the right ventricle fails, it is a much more difficult situation and sometimes only ECMO can save the patient. So when the anesthesiologist is failing, it is a much more dire situation.

To have a good functional brain 🧠 one must have a good and functional heart .
So my conclusion for the ones who want to understand this metaphor, is that
You must have the brains to understand the science
And the heart to understand the patient .

Thank you for another great video. BTW- question on my exam for the 1st degree of specialization in anesthesiology 30 years ago- Cardiovascular monitoring. Answer- The most important monitoring is the smart anesthesiologist :) True, but now I would have too much humility to answer that. Regards.

Couple of days ago a surgeon said to me " In theater I'm a fighter and a fighter needs his back to be protected and the more I trust the anesthesiologist the more my back is protected in the battle ".
And what he said is the truth ...

I wish I had what it took, but fortunately I have time to try and obtain these qualities!! (I’m in middle school). Hopefully I’ll be fitting in all these categories once I am a junior. So far I’d say i have 3/5… but just because I can’t do it now doesn’t mean I won’t be able to in the future. Thanks, this motivated me a lot!! ❤

Of course! It takes time to be a pro at all these. Don't give up, study hard and try gaining as much experience as you can. We wish you a lot of success.

We are the ones who actually require an AI to assist in our work with the amount of information being fed from the patient, the monitors , the ventilator, syringe pumps etc and when something goes wrong we only get a few minutes to figure out the problem.
But the adrenaline rush is unparalled❤

Very good points Doctor. You could probably add Communication in your group of 5 traits. And after 22 years of practicing anesthesia. the stress, commitment and care have evaporated and because it's such a critical factor, it's time someone else take my place. God Bless
