Love the Bigfoot series Cliff. I believe that most stories have truth in them somewhere. Me, myself, I think there is something to the Bigfoot stories as there is just to many sightings. Can everyone of them be fake?

A friend once said that my walks in nature's parklands and forests must be much like deep sea diving. I had to agree. I dive in and do my best to deep see into the world(s) around me.

I think Yogi and BooBoo were stealing pickinic baskets way back when, and the story changed into sightings of a Bigfoot creature.

    Cliff,
I love Cryptozoology knowing that many species of plants and animal that existed
within Human recall have gone instinct for a number of reasons, but mostly us.
so, there is always a possibility, no matter how unlikely, that some small humanoid creature lived on our Continent.
Bigfoot, not so much, they would need numbers to survive, so with modern technology, where could they hide, especially with sightings close to modern developments.
I really like your thoughtful and studied approach to this mythology.
I live in the Upper Pacific Northwest, the home of "Bigfoot" sightings since 2013 and have
never heard of any ape like creatures, of course they have the "Bigfoot Restaurant", at Seatac INternational Airport:)
    Best Wishes,
    Frederick "Rik" Spector

I'm not saying there are or aren't such creatures here. But as a point of comparison, there are over 15k black bears in PA and how often do any of us see them besides those who foolishly actively feed them? I find their scat in my yard on a regular basis, but I've only had maybe a dozen or so sightings over the past 40+ years, most of which has been spent living in rural woodland areas where these animals thrive and are highly active and not particularly shy about humans.

A statement I find humorous is, "Mention his name and his aura lights up." Judging from my past experiences with natural phenomena: "Do not forget your sense of humor." What truth could lie beneath? "There is nothing to fear but fear itself."

No reason why it wasn’t there. Lots of bush where they could live. So much out there we don’t know. If the Native Americans believe in them then I would go along with them. Thanks for taking me along, please stay safe and take care

Nice walk and story of a creature. I would think the native Americans had their legends/stories to tell the children just as Germans, Italians, Irish, English, etc. have. I think this is just a story about a cub/bear that lived on/in the woods that stole food if you were not alert. It probably was meant to teach the children to watch and protect food as I think there was little of it. Handed down and embellished by others who came along later they live on. You know, the old "Once upon a time, long ago"................story we all loved as children but had a life's lesson to be learned too.

I went on a picnic there, with a then-girlfriend in 1986. I remember us joking about seeing a Bigfoot while there. No sighting, just a pleasant time.
I still live in the area.

So, my nephew had 2 sightings very close together, my brother was there for one of them (they are not Bigfoot fanatics), of an upright creature that was splashing in the creek that runs thru their farm. Vegetation blocked some of their view, but it was not a deer, and not a bear, and was not human either. Shortly after that, 2 of his friends were further down, different property, same creek towards evening time-no one would have been down there, not an occupied area-and for fun they did a "bigfoot"type call. Something very close answered back....it was definitely not a human voice, not a coyote either. This was in North central Ohio farm country. Since then, no other sightings, so its possible it was wandering thru.
Does Bigfoot exist? My opinion is yes, a distinct possibility!

Maybe in pre-settler times, but too many people after that. Growing up in York County some of the old timers used "Arbatrotch" as a catch all term for wild animals that robbed gardens, hen houses, did boogeyman type stuff, etc. I think maybe a PA German folktale along the lines of The Long Lost Friend.

I think I saw an albatwitch up in Tioga county. It was like a sasquatch, but only about 4ft or 5ft tall and of a very slender build. If a sasquatch looks like a gorilla/man cross, this was like a monkey/man cross. I assumed it to be a juvenile sasquatch, but it may have been an albatwitch.

It’s fun listening to all your info on the old lore. You forgot to bring your apples! I think the first wild man in literature is Enki-du from Epic of Gilgamesh c.2100 BC. I’ve always imagined that these stories are a blend of boogeyman tales and attempts to grapple with long passed down stories of prior hominids that became extinct during evolution.

There is a medical condition where a person's body is covered by hair completely. There were brothers that were called the Wolf Boys that were stars in a Mexican Circus. CSI did an episode about a brother and sister that had the condition. Back a century ago a person with this condition could of lived in the area shun by family and others.

It seems logical that a population of some size would have to exist to keep the species alive. An odd sighting every few years in such a small area doesn't really support their existence today. Did they live in the past? If they don't live today, and yet there are contemporary sightings, then people are seeing what's not there. In which case the chreatures were probably never there to be seen in the first place. I'm skeptical on this one. But I really enjoy the series. The trail was beautiful..

I think that these small or large people were humans BUT had physical defects and were ostracized by society and their only option was to live in the woods. To survive they had to steal etc.

That makes sense. There's always a small %age of babies born with deformities. Centuries ago this type of thing wasn't well understood, if a baby was born mis-shapen in some way, or had certain behavioral problems, they'd often say he was possessed by a demon or the mother was a witch and cast them out of the village; especially if there was something like a drought or natural disaster happening around the same time. I bet a lot of old 'stories' about "giants" , "ogres", and "bridge trolls" etc come from these kids, all-growed-up, living ferally at the edges of towns and villages.

Another thought-provoking subject during a relaxing walk. Again where are the archeological signs that this species existed? fossil remains or skeletal would support such a species like this. Or lore that was inspired by the Indians of ages past of a young bear in low light seen standing on its hind legs after climbing down a tree stealing food that was left unguarded.

I believe that there is some truth... but again when I was a teenager living between Elizabethtown/Bainbridge/Rheems area , I believe I saw a bigfoot while hiking deep within a wooded area not far from where Timber Villa is today.. and the fruit orchard is near Masonic Village. In being a teenager, and in hiking by myself when I saw what I believe is or was a bigfoot, I took off running in the opposite direction... What I remember is that it had dark hair all over its body... was standing on 2 feet and was loping towards my direction which was downhill from its original location that I saw it. It was tall .. over 6 foot from appearances compared to my own height which was barely over 5 foot tall.
No I do not believe what I saw was a black bear although black bears had been seen relatively in that area as well... The reason I believe it was a bigfoot and not a bear has to do with speed in which it loping down that hill towards me on only 2 feet. while bears can certainly stand on 2 feet and perhaps even walk a few feet on their hind legs and not on all 4.. I have sincere doubts about a bear loping in a jogging or loping downhill on 2 feet when it would have been much easier if it was a bear to be on 4 legs and not 2....
