Kharon and Tween are such appealing characters in this otherwise implausible story. They are what make this one of my favorite X Minus One episodes. Blasting just 2 people in random directions out into space is an obviously unworkable plan for colonization - a ridiculous waste of costly spaceships and people. I doubt that Sturgeon's original short story was so farfetched. The human drama make up for it by being believable and heartbreaking.

Interesting observation. I wonder if the author had that in mind or if it's just a coincidence.

Volume is fine on my Moto android phone. Are you using the same headphones or speaker subsystem with all of your devices?

    SPOILERS ALERT.
Charon is a despicable character. He had months to encourage Judd to talk to Tween or let Tween know about Judd's feelings for her, but Charon's own jealousy (and lust?) stopped him from intervening. Not to mention he murdered Wald in cold blood and covered it up, instead of letting the proper authorities deal with Wald.
Also, the story's premise is implausible. One-way spaceships designed to carry only two (untrained) people? Emigrants who didn't know until after they left Earth that they would need to have a mate in order to be certified? Spaceships so unsafe that only about half reach their destination? Spaceships so insecure that anyone could go aboard and launch?
How was the all-important certification requirement -- that only two lifemates would be allowed to depart -- forgotten at the end?
