Thanks Chris, great advice all round. When I bought my trumpet last year I was sure I'd been sold a pup - turned out the seller had cleaned and oiled the instrument (and boy, did he oil it!) and reassembled it incorrectly. I guess he felt a valve is a valve and so just stuck them in anywhere and anyway. As a complete beginner it took me a while to figure it out but not before almost blowing my eardrums inside out thinking I just wasn't blowing hard enough! I really could have done with this vid a year or so ago! Cheers mate and thanks again.
It’s funny how the valves on my student models click when they’re in the exact location they need to be, but my 2 professional model Bach trumpets, you have to actually check if they’re lined up. When I first got my Stradivarius, I went to oil the valves and I went to play and nothing came out and I had to sit there and figure out what valves were in backwards and which ones were correct
One time I oiled my valves just before the show started and when it was time to play, in front of an audience, nothing happened! 🤦🏾♂️ wait, that was last month! 😅
Most of the time they would face you. Depends on the make/model of the trumpet. If that doesn’t work, turn them toward the bell. If that doesn’t work, turn them to the side. All valves should face the same direction.
My trumpet sounded so bad even though I did it on the mouthpiece and since I am in beginning band, she tried my trumpet herself and it sounded strange so she moved the valves around and she played it again and it sounded good, but when I played it again it sounded bad again

Yes! This is the reason I created this video. It can be scary when you first get your horn and you think that it’s broken already but it really isn’t.

My Bach has brash valve locks. You can hear them
Thank you! You helped us figure out why our beginner player could not make any sound in his horn. The valves were out of place.

Hi Chris. I have a problem with my trumpet valves. The numbers on the valves which way should they be facing

My trumpet is not working still
This probably won’t happen to most people but if a hole or leak develops anywhere on the horn it can make that kind of noise too 🎺
yes, very true!
