Don’t say that you are to old for this. You are young and full off energy. When I was building my boat I started at 50 and finished it after 13000 hrs at the age of 63. Just winches out the motor to repair my shaftseal yesterday. Still going strong. You already did what I am going to do the next 3 or more years. Sailing the world.
Love to see that you love your (small) boat “Uma” and keep on rebuilding it to make it your HOME again. That is dedication in stead of get a new and bigger boat build.
I started as you did. !!
Thanks for doing this refit instead of buying a giant new catamaran. This is much more interesting and helpful. I admire your commitment to Uma.
no they shouldn't. it's a huge waste to be putting so much money and time into this. They're only doing this is for no other reason than to earn money making youtube videos. This project makes no sense at all.
@@junkname9983 If you don't like it, don't watch. I think what they are doing is awesome and I'm thrilled to learn. Please consider removing your negative comment.
@@johncolton consider other people have valid opinions that could be different than you. If YOU don't like what I have to say, you can go away and refrain from reading it.
@@junkname9983 How would anyone know what you're saying if they don't read it first?
@junkname,
Have you considered that they might actually LIKE doing this, and NOT doing this for the money….?
Living aboard is certainly not all about the money….
Making some money by the video’s might be a nice compensation for the costs involved, taking on a project like this.
I suggest, that if you have nothing supporting to say, than keep quiet .
There is no point in talking people down.
…’ Have a nice day 👍🏻
Pretty sure that "Pearson" is no longer a valid qualifier for Uma. She's 100% a one-off at this point! Impressive work Dan & Kika
A regular Ship of Thesesus lol.
It’s ironic how firmly the headliner was attached vs how poorly the bulkheads were. Admire your perseverance 😊
This comment right here!!!!
If the entire boat was made out of headliner, they'd have never needed to do this project. 😂
😂
Still would have had the condensation issues did you not watch?@talyrath
To bad that at the Factory the headliner personnel did not install the keel and the keel workers install the headliner, would have produced a much superior vessel
Great idea to remove the headliner and clean out all of that mold.
Funny thing, my Yorkshire Terrier gets so excited when he hears the end of your videos. He jumps up & starts dancing around. 😁 🐈 ⛵ 🐬

I can’t think of anyone else who could make a story about grinding as interesting as you two ; )
Stormy Dan(iels)?

To stiffen the top you should do a grid similar to what you did on the hull. It doesn't have to be a very tall grid, but even a 25 mm high grid would do a lot. Make it about 0.6 meter grid squares and that flex would just about disappear. The grid would also give you something to mount your removable sections to. You could also run some plastic flex conduit to route the wires for lights and the like.
I totally agree with you. The extra space would allow for a wiring raceway system which would be great for flexibility and future wiring replacement/modifications. The added deck stiffening is icing on the cake!
hmmm, a tasty possibility...
I was thinking the same. One can use some hidden mounting points. Similar to how a swans floor boards come out
Absolutely!!! A must
This is a really good idea. It will be a chance for you to flex your architectural muscles. You could even make the structural ribs triple duty as a cable race, structural element and design statement piece..
Never ever say "It should be easy" while standing in, on or near a boat. You guys are kicking ass.
Let the ceiling ribs be thick enough that you can armacell/flex insulate the ceiling, it will make a big difference both in the hot and cold climates, and it will lower outside noise.
Great work guys!!!
exactly my thought too, I strongly concur- now You have the chance to fix all this in one sweep !
A lot of that damp could well be condensation.
_Spray foam for the WIN!_ If it's within the budget.
Also my suggestion: I would prefer a spray cork insulation if this would be in a budget - cork is naturally resistant against mold infestation. Really admire your energy and stamina. With you two, one can experience that 1+1 is not two but a multiple - wonderful to see how beautifully you interact as a couple. Good luck with your big project: if anyone can do it, it's you two. Sailing greetings from Berlin
@@t.p.2811 cork is also naturally resistant to fire and does not absorb water, but can absorb some oil.
As much as I hated to sell our 50+ year old boat, I'm glad I didn't end up doing what you are doing. I remember the squeeks and groans while sailing her and bringing a boat that old to modern is way more than I wanted or needed.to do. You are doing a fantastic job.
Behind the headliner you found moisture and mold ofcourse .
This means condensation, how are dealing with that now?
Are you going to insulate the hull above waterline and the ceiling?
Insulation makes a huge positive difference when you live on a boat where ever you are!
By the way, amazing refit you two are doing with an energy and enthusiasm I can only dream of and than i still will be tired 😊
they're basically building a whole new boat out of Uma's basic structure!
I’ve been watching this whole project……. Dang you two are hard workers!
It’s great to see that you are resetting the hatches and port lights while you’ve got down this far into a refit of Uma ❤
I don’t know if it’s happening to you two, but I’m getting flashbacks to when you first tackled Uma so many years ago. I’m continually impressed with your perseverance on these difficult, and probably boring tasks. I’m sure that Uma will once again be a beautiful sailboat and a testament to your tenacity and skills. Thank you for sharing your amazing journey. ❤
Fascinating post-mortem on a Pearson 36! It's too bad Pearson is no longer building these boats. I bet they would have learned a lot!
I have a Pearson 385 I'm refitting. You're videos are giving me such a good insight into how they're built and whats under all those hidden areas! It's so helpful, thank you!!
My 1966 Pearson Vanguard got a huge two year makeover before I left CA for two and a half years. Watching what you are doing makes what I did small potatoes in comparison. Very happy you’re giving this boat the new life it deserves! You’re both to be commended for your tireless effort! Bravo! 👍🏼👊🏻
Rustoleum 9100 has proven by far to be the best two part epoxy paint to use for the boat interior, including the bilge. It has various activators that allow for total immersion applications (bilge) as well as low temp application. It's used on oil rigs and other industrial applications. Does not require sanding between coats.
Thanks for the tip!
I had no idea how much I've been missing you two doing boat work, thanks for sharing.
Gah, so much fibreglass dust. THE worst! We’ve been there and empathize! Really admire your determination and perseverance! Keep it up guys, you’re rocking it!
Re the roof just behind the bow, maybe add some ribbing to the ceiling so as to ensure it won't buckle when a wave washes over it in bad weather. Water is heavy!
It’s always amazing how many trapped cavities there are in a boat where rot can fester. Always good to keep that in mind when rebuilding and avoid that issue.
I've got to hand it to you guys being prepared to pull apart all of your previous hard work to make what is obviously a very emotional journey considering where your boat has taken you over the past few years. As I had to rip out quite a bit from my much smaller 5.5 meter trailer yacht when I restored it 4 years ago, I can understand what it involves. It is this dedication that induces me to want to keep financially supporting you so keep up the good work and I'll keep supporting you, even in the small way that I can afford on my retirement income.
Loving this series, can't wait to see how Uma turns out!
To anyone who is about to tackle a glass project like this, I highly suggest getting a full-faced respirator. you will thank me. One other tip from a shipwright, is after taping your gloves to your suit, you put another pair of gloves on. , so to avoid having to keep replacing and re-taping your gloves,. Just wear a secondary pair .
your "Brief Construction Montage" was great!
Watching your project while doing a "light" version on my boat it great. If the boat you have is a good design, meaning the hull shape created a boat that is sea worthy and sea kindly and good sailing, a project like this is well worth it. We know from watching hundreds of hours of video of Uma sailing, that Uma is just such a boat. Looking at the hull inside when completely empty, can also see that Uma sports a lot of interior space as well. The fiberglass hulls of that era were way overbuilt... seeing Uma now getting a structural interior that will keep the hull from working and will protect the integrity of the aging glass hull... we know she can last forever and being what she is she is worth the effort. Deep congratulations.
dont forget to reinstall conduit - to allow wire runs.
Now is the time to put in reinforced chain plates.
Uma is the newest old sailing boat around. 😅
Idea, you could do a small profile grid under the deck like you did on the hull. Then you’d be able to hide wires and maybe insulate. Then it would give you a place to secure a headliner to.
Even just laminating PVC conduit pipe ( 5/8”) with a 6” wide band of glass will do both stiffen the deck and provide a route for cabling…
I hope you take the opportunity to insulate the hull and deck with som foam befors you close it with a final layer of glass. That will definitely have an effect on avoiding condensation in colder climate. Keep on the good and hard work. Interesting to see.
This is one of my objections to glass instead of wood as a building material.
I vote for the truck tour.

I'm 65, and have spent many hours in the boat yard. And after watching you doing all that grinding, my body was aching.
You two deserve a full massage!
Uma is looking good! Can't wait to see the finished product.
It's amazing that you were able to hide all of that noise from getting onto your videos for all those years.
All the metalworkers blinking at the idea of a flap disk lasting an entire day!
Love watching these projects
Two projects at once! As a LR devotee, I love getting snippets of that fit-out too. I am also thinking back to when Uma had that "swing keel". Dan & Kika - you have come such a loooooong way.
Removing the headliner eliminated another design constraint and I can’t wait to see what aesthetic and practical solutions you come up for the new cabin. This may be the most interesting boat renovation project I’ve seen.
I know you may not like doing this project, but we love it! I’m excited to see how this turns out!
It’s almost like they secured the ceiling of that boat with the the perfect glue vs the ribs and bottom structure with Elmer’s glue. What a big difference. Glad you guys pulled it down because those leaks are concerning.
Hopefully your lower back recovers. Grinding a ceiling like that with your arms above your head just wears you out like a marathon.
Wonderful! You’re an INSPIRATION to us all.
Keep at it kids!
The hull is looking SO clean.
You guys look so much happier when Uma is involved than you do when you're just in... the van....
I'm biased. I enjoy Uma vids far more but you're working your backsides off and you still have huge smiles on your faces. Looking forward to the finished product and dropping her back in the water.
Good job, you two!
Getting rid of that overhead liner is a damn good choice, going back in, I would take 1" thick foam board and glue it up to the overhead and house sides, it will help keep the boat much more comfortable in the weather extremes and it won't condensate.
You could either glass over it, or even better put a headliner in made out of vinyl that will not condensate, could do some nice wood on the cabin house sides and have something really beautiful.
Also I suspect with taking that liner out, and the floor liner, that you have removed close to the amount of weight as you have added, not quite, but close.
Watching this episode, I was also thinking about insulation & condensation. Sandwich boats have much less condensation. Since you've stripped it naked, you can add a layer of foam and glass on top of it, or any other insulation solution. I wouldn't leave the outer shell naked like this. I've been watching your work for years. Love your energy and mindset!
I had the exact same thought when I saw this and it shouldn’t even take more space and there was lots of air behind the headliner’s
A lot of Euro 4 season boats especially live aboard Al boats use sprayed on recycled cork granules.. very effective light anti mould bacterial and fire retardant no off gassing .. also rot resistant.
It also seals away the GRP from shedding fibers. You can also add a foam.
That ground GRP is dangerous stuff .. in the environment or in the body.
Yes, insulate now, it will be great for reducing the weather extremes above deck.
@@janbennetsen7292 yeah, that was actually quite cringe seeing that because to me it just looked like a big mold trap!
You two are my heroes when it comes overhead grinding. It is hard work and taxing on the muscles.❤❤
When I was watching the video, I was thinking "oh, the joys of being young without the pain". When we got to the end and you were talking about the pain, I felt for you. I know that pain and I always hate having to work above my head.
I like how your tone of voice changes dramatically from the filming at the end of the day to all happy and upbeat in the morning filming. You’ll be so happy you tore that nastiness out.
Hi there!
I’ve been following your adventures from the beginning, and have very much enjoyed them.
As for your current project, I’ve been there and done that!
We have a Goman Express 30 sailboat we bought new in 1982.
By 1987 we realise that it wasn’t quite perfect, and after exploring many bigger boat options, we decided to to modify it.
So we took out the entire inner liner, both hull and deck, redesigned the interior, made a mold on top of the old deck and layed up a new cabin top.
We put in a quarter birth on starboard, moved the stbd settee back towards the hull, and many other mods.( improvements.
When it was all done we were delighted! But during the process, I often questioned my sanity.
If I recall we took out 80 lbs if dust from removing the inner liners.
I am very much like your first redesign!
It’s an interesting problem optimising the use of space in a given hull shape.
Best of luck!
Cheers😅
Charley
I would love to see a tour of the Defender as well! It's so nice to see the back turning into a home!
So glad to see you finally rip those windows out of there, not my boat but those old windows should have been updated years ago. Now, I hope you will update that companionway as this would drive me crazy if I had to open and close it as often as you guys do.
Wow! Down to the nuts and bolts … and beyond ! Love the channel and look forward to watching your progress and adventures !!!
Removing the overhead liner makes perfect sense to me. It squeaks, makes bedding deck fittings difficult, and when Dan pulled the large panel down, the dust that fell would be slowly filtering out for years ! Bet you will be much happier with it gone. Meanwhile you probably itch like a pack of stray dogs!
Yes, imagine what that microdùst is doing to the lungs!
You guys are getting closer to the splash. Keep the grind going.
I'm pretty sure at this point you hold the world record for being the cutest couple for the longest amount of time.
Is it just me or is peeling off peel ply as satisfying as it seems???? Don’t let the work grind you down team :-)😊
Inside looks amazing. Clean slate. Interested to see what most innovative boat interior designers come up with next.
so excited for Uma to be all done up and sparkling again... that day is coming! Just keep at it, Dan and Kika!
That drain hole that Kika drilled is really getting a workout.
So nice to see you converting Uma into a non-liner boat.
Grind for 30 seconds, shake it out. Yes. Similar to the joys of longboarding the hull...sand, rest, sand, rest. Being an old man, I get one good hour, one reasonable hour, and in the third hour I'm just kidding myself. But the hull is fairer and the boat is faster.
Great job as always you two! You are making a great foundation and clean slate for your designs! Can't wait to see what is coming up! Take care and be safe!
17:46 story of DIY. I've been renovating my girlfriend's closet... Was gonna be a week project... It's been... 2.5 lol.
Pulled off panelling. Laid hardwood. Mudded the drywall that was behind the panelling. Primed. Painted (walls and ceiling). Struggled with floor finish for days (still looks like crap) and still gotta paint the patches and install moulding and the actual closet lol
OK, that is probably the best informercial you have ever done for those power packs!
oh yeah, milk it like you were actually old timers. ;-) I have done that over head work and do feel your aches, pains and cramps.
thanks for the video.
You two are working SO hard on your boat. I am amazed and proud of you two, your work ethic is an inspiration for any person no matter what age they are. I wish you both all the best as you continue to the goal you hope to reach. You basically are building a whole new boat, you will KNOW so much more by the time you are finished, and there will be nothing you don't know about boats and sailing by the time you are 50. I can't imagine too many people will have as much knowledge as the two of you will. All the best you two.
With all that headroom now, makes me think it might be nice to design new skylights, windows, vents, and cabin top.
What a great journey🎉
LOL Love Dan's closing statement ( Getting to old for this ) I use that all the time great work guys and pls wear fall protection when working so close to deck edge
that first step is a big one. trust me been there done that did not end well. Be safe we all look forward to your videos from the boat not the hospital.
Yes! I'd love to see how you are fixing up your truck!
That was CRAZY. I was sure there was nothing else left you could possibly find to strip out. Certain. I'm wrong again! You have such courage, and such confidence.
3 weeks demo, 5 years putting her back together! never give up!
Well, it's a great plan and a terrible process at the same time...I hope you have also checked the humidity of the deck since you got that deep. I feel your pain as I've been in a similar process with my boat. I'm sure that you will find your way, I want to say once again, please do it right this time:), you and your boat well deserve it...
Proper job guys 👍🤗🤗 That headliner was just naaaasty!!!! Well done, she's coming along! xx🤗🤗
What a hell of a job
Glad you removed the headliner. Lot's of crap up in those nooks and crannies, that would always come down as dust. And yes, the weight reduction.
A bit late now, but the tool I've found that makes short work of removal is a flat scraper blade that attaches to a sawzall. It removes tabbed fiberglass or separates dissimilar materials with ease. Used mostly to break up floor tiles and remove glued down carpet.
I love that you've integrated your design backgrounds with physical production, and done very well at it.
She looks so strong now. Impressive work!
When you do such a rebuild make sure you swap out every thru hole in the boat. And take your time ensuring it is water tight. Just swap all port holes including the framework around it to ensure it will be water tight for the next decades to come.
Love your Spotify play list. Listening to it while I game out with buddys
Loved it great job. can't wait for the next video
I'm sure glad you did this. I wouldn't have expected the "stuff" hiding behind that head liner. 8 - O
Love watching and can’t wait to see the progress.
Ahh, the peel ply. ASMR that I wasn’t expecting, but greatly appreciated.
Man I hate that smell of grinding fiberglass. You guys put in WORK this week!
Y'all have integrity. And a terrific work ethic. Sure do admire what you do and how you live ... cheers!
Great episode
One idea for the new headliner: use a stretched fabric solution like Whisper Walls. It's lightweight and provides easy access to the underside of the deck if needed.
I feel for you guys, been there and if I never have to revisit it again I won't complain. Keep up the good work and remember one day in the distant future YOU will look back with fond memories.
You have done an amazing amount of work. Kudos!
That moisture is shocking. Looked like black mold. So glad you guys are clearing it ALL out.
Great feeling to see the liner come down. Amazing solid and clean platform for you all to build on.
To get a sense of how quiet Uma will be Far Reach Voyages did a similar refit. The difference is astounding. Highly recommended sailing channel. It is so quiet.
I am amazed of all the hard work you've doing on Uma for such a long time ! You can really be proud of your team work ! Have a wonderful day ! 🥳
One doesn't need to many excuses to remove a headliner.
Now you can finally run those wires, radar stuff, HDMI cable from Chartplotter to TV all that.
Way to go!
When you said it'd taken two days to pull the head liner, and you expected it to take just one day to grind, I knew that was a crock.
Oh glorious sanding always takes twice as long as all the rest of the work you're doing.
I feel you so much! I also got everything out of my 44 year old boat and i'm building it up at the same time as you. But unfortunately alongside work, which slows things down a bit. I wish you lots of energy for your project
I have to take a nap after watching the two of you work so hard. Uma is going to look beautiful when your done. God Bless !!!
Enjoying the rebuild, looking forward to the completion.
Glue some foam all around the inside. Glass them all after that. This gives enormous strength and excellent isolation and prevents condensation.
That interior is really shaping up to something beautiful. Great work you two!
Sweat equity lol. Been watching since step 1. What an adventure! This is going to take awhile. We'll be watching! ❤
the anticipation of this build got me glued, i cant wait to see more🙃
This is why I watch. Thank you!
