    I honestly don't understand why people criticise his voice. It's so smooth and powerful. I love it.

      if u knew anything about singing you wld realise he has nowhere near as much control or power in his voice as Javerts in the West End

    • @agentrapper
      @agentrapper 4 года назад +7

      As Leo Evans is getting at, he's pretty amateurish when it comes to singing.
      Not very clean notes, almost no vibrato, flat and powerless rendition. Not that I could do it better, but that's just how it is :)

    • @alexwood4695
      @alexwood4695 4 года назад +9

      Yes while it has no vibrato it isn’t exactly flat it’s kind of monotone but to be honest it’s better than other actors in films

    • @agentrapper
      @agentrapper 4 года назад +7

      @@alexwood4695 It's flat in the sense of being boring and not being able to reach very far. Imagine him on a stage. The people in the back wouldn't be able to hear him without the microphone. That's what I mean by flat :)

      It is NOT supposed to be soft. The point of the song is to show the unyielding hate of his religious fanatsim. Knowing this is how he sees religion helps explain his suicide.

    Russell Crowe is so great at singing. This song is definitely one of my favorites. The whole story of Les Miserables touches my heart, but this song is just so beautiful and when you watch the movie the scene is just beautiful too. I'm absolutely touched by his performance of "Stars".

  • @cjm3246

    Honestly, I prefer Russell Crowe's sombre portrayal of Javert than the others, when he sings, you can feel his emotions and I just think that he makes Javert. It makes you feel a happy-sadness, that's the only way I can explain it.

    When I was 7, my mother would repeatedly watch this movie ALL the time and I fell in love with it! After she died, I decided to watch it again because since I was 7, I never actually understood the story until now and I love it. I sing it all the time at school, Natalie (my friend) and I always say "Rest in peace, lil' dude" to Gavroche, and I just......LOVE IT! I did watch the 1998 version. It was okay......I mean, I would like to see Liam Neeson sing but......GUESS NOT! ._. Anyway, my favorite song is Stars because it's so beautiful and I don't know, just anytime someone sings about falling from grace or just hearing the words, I just want to listen!
    Thank you for the lyrics, thank you Victor Hugo for creating this masterpiece, this beautiful work of art, and thank you Les Misérables 2012 cast for singing all the songs we love and know

      I like his voice too. I think he looks like Javert and acts like Javert. But he just doesn’t sing like him. Javert is a powerful and driven man. It’s a part made for singers like Terrance Mann with their strong baritone voice. The song is meant to be powerful. It’s soft a certain points, but it grows with volume as Javert’s feelings come out. “You fall in flames” is a deep conviction, a warning to himself and others. And the ending is his vow to find and capture Valjean no matter the cost. So while I do like Russel Crows version, it just doesn’t give me the same sense of power and certainty that Javert should have.

    I personally like when the actors in Les Mis aren't fabulous singers. I don't really see Les Mis as a story where we need to be thinking about vocal aptitude, I think it's a story about pain and perseverance. I'd rather have a great actor and a believable singer than a perfect vocalist whose acting doesn't capture the character well.

    I have to agree with Megan. Javert was a man of God that wanted to put the evil in their place, however he never knew how to forgive until the end. He realizes how terrible hes looked at people all his life and cant live with the heavy guilt, so he kills himself. I know it seems weird to think he went to heaven after suicide but if he was a true believer in Christ thats all that matters. Thats just how i look at it.

    Well it wasn't really focusing on him not being a true christian, it was about how he believed in the law, and everything was black and white. He believed in God and the law and the law was solid, but Valjean showed him that there is grey areas in life, and he realized his whole life going exactly by the law wasn't always right.

    my biggest issue with the film was that it tried to be a "film," not a musical. so it tried to use the subtlety that you get with film in songs written specifically with the required power of stage in mind, and the transition didn't work. otherwise, it might have been great.
    that said, this one of the few songs (the main others being "I Dreamed a Dream" and possibly "Do You Hear the People Sing?") that I feel made the transition well. this is a very contemplative number. so the more subdued quality of the film's versions fit with the song, despite the power being not quite there.

    Mh, no. Javert committed suicide, so it's supposed he'll go to Hell. For some (and for me), ''Valjean's soliloquy'' and ''Javert's suicide'' are parallel because Valjean and Javert are seen as the same soul which had taken two opposite paths.

    Quast just simple captured the correct emotions portrayed by the lyrics. Russell Crowe is a great actor and he portrayed Javert decently, this act is just not his strongest suit. Javert is supposed to be a hardcore law enforcer, the epitome of order, a man who stands firm in his principles no matter the cost, hence, the grandiose statements.

      +Joe Reynolds While your point is entirely true, the correct lyric is "Mine is the way of the Lord". Check the film subtitles, or a lyrics version online. It's meant to rhyme with "sword", but many singers don't emphasise the "-d" at the end, as it flows better within the song.

    Is this the album version? I know in the movie it merges into "Look Down" so I'm curious

    I realized while watching the movie over and over that the stories of Valjean and Javert are exactly the same. Both had pretty crappy lives, and both ended up leaning on God. In the end, though, if anyone noticed, the song that Valjean sang in the beginning after he met the Bishop, Javert sings before he kills himself. Its sad both end up dead, but both worshipped God in their own way, so they'll both go to Heaven(:

    This isn’t a perfect performance by any means, but Crowe did really good in this song, especially compared to his other songs in the movie imo. His emotions translate so beautifully into the song here and it sounds so natural

    Well no, now that i think about it, Javert probably never was a true believer because forgiveness is kind of a big part of Christianity haha. I now believe Javert represents people who truly think and claim that they are Christians but dont truly have a relationship with Christ. He also represents those who think they can gain salvation.

      I am not alone in hating her guts tbh...I am sure of this... She is one of the biggest problems in music today... Next to idiot Bieber... And yes i am a hardcore bieber hater... hes just a media publicity tool, and he doesnt deserve to get recognized... Then again perhaps thats what makes him noticed at all... his idiotic attitude toward life... anyways, nicki minaj cant sing comp to many singers imo... I dont consider her music to be talent music... but i am probably old school in believing in real talented music singers and groups... I am not referring of course to nicki... I only follow talented performers. ;) and in this song, russell crowe has an amazing rendition of this aria!! Beautiful song!
