- Scuttling (sinking) of decommissioned Canadian Navy Destroyer HMCS Annapolis on April 4, 2015 in Halkett Bay Marine Park on Gambier Island, British Columbia, Canada. After years of preparation and cleaning and with help of shape charges the decommissioned vessel embarked on its final voyage to the bottom of Halkett Bay to become an artificial reef. Divers as well as research will over the years witness life return to the bays desolate sea floor caused by years of log booming.

Was the first ship of my navy career in 1989. Lots of memories...both clear and foggy ;)
Rest Peacefully gracious girl. Sailed on her 1988-1991. “To Excel” ⚓️🇨🇦
I served on board her 1981-1982.
I salut you and reward you the Kings highest reward the Victorian cross
She was a sleek looking ship. She went out in style.
Steven u got my respect
@@skipstjoriarjeeling9594 For serving on a ship 1 year maybe less??? See it is people like you that like giving out trophies for participation.
Must have been tough to see her go down
Seeing the water rushing in, you can appreciate how much of a struggle it would be to abandon ship, pushing against all that rushing water to escape. Even more so in a listing ship.
Apparently, navies have a new job of creating reefs now...the Mexican Navy did it, the USN made the worlds largest reef with a CVN-34 and now Canada Joins in. But seriously, yes, this is much more honorable and respectful towards the ship then getting it cut up and sold
It doesn't matter if you sell it for scrap or sink it...
Iit's a piece of metal and not something to worship.
@@Xingmey Is that a pun?
@@Xingmey You have never served on a warship my friend or you would feel the sadness that all sailors do when a ship goes to a watery grave, whatever the reason.
CV-34 or CVA-34, not CVN.
Oriskany was an oil burner, not a nuke.
A heck of a lot cheaper. The sale of decommissioned ships is such these days that it is more cost effective to expend it as a target or sink it as a dive site.
The USS Oriskany is a prime example.
Sailed on her 71/72, aircrew in Sea King.
You know Maj. John Cottle?
A ship of her statue deserves to be sunk like this, the honorably way.
Not cut up and sold for scrap. Now the fish can enjoy a new reef.
I just saw this video, the ship is serving another great purpose. My compliments to all who made her ready. This was also a perfect scuttle especially for the excellent placement of shaped charges which resulted in the best scuttle I have seen. 👍
My dad works in the navy, I think he's been on that ship a couple times. Joined 1989 still in today! PO2 Larsen is his rank. Memories!
My dad served on HMCS Annapolis. I was on her a few times myself and served on HMCS Assiniboine, HMCS St Laurent, and HMCS Ottawa.
I forget offhand, but would be around 67-68.
You could imagine that as being a poor drowning sailors eye view. Pretty thought provoking and terrifying.
Yes that thought crossed my mind-I love the sea but she can be a cruel mistress
This is showing you how deadly it is to be on and in a sinking ship.
I wouldn't hesitate to have one of these ships as a home, and what a home. In Portsmouth I saw so many RN ships in the breakers, HMS Fearless, a famous troop landing ship along with sister ship, submarines aligned with each other, leaning on each other in sadness waiting their turn....
Fantastic video!
Congrats for a very good job
I love the views
Very cool...great job on this - Thank you!

The fake "static" effect added after camera is turned on is extremely annoying.
I fast-forwarded through the fake static effects.
Yes, very much so.
Not to me, I like it. Adds to the drama!
You get a real sense of how fast a ship can sink its crazy how much time you'd have to try and get out.
Be a nice dive site in a few years
That is both terrifying and fascinating.
Old ships don’t disappear, they are reassigned to guard shipmates who never came home.
And to ferry them to the final port
So do sailors have this idea that when they die, they're gonna wake up on some Navy ship that transports them to the afterlife?
@@user-kg2jw3we6b no, to a 1930’s Singapore bar and tattoo parlor.
Now that was awesome
I have the nintendo that was in one of the break rooms next to the hangar on this ship, was where my dad worked, and he took it when he left waaay back in the early 90s' lol... i remember going on the ship a few times and being amazed at everything, i remember the galley looked like a 1950's diner, chrome everywhere... kinda sad to see it sunk...
This is Eco doing and good clean work
Just shows how fast a ship that size can sink and makes you think of the edmond fitzgerald seeing how fast the water filled the bridge is scary shows the 29 souls in 1975 had no chance , RIP
This was specially prepare to sink fast and clean. Under normal sailing conditions, it would take WAY more to get her down.
Finally got promoted to Submarine! :)
only if it catches fire.
She is still modern looking today -apart from the moss -and the holes of course ! Wales UK.
That's the funniest sounding water I've ever heard. Sounds like music. I wonder if the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald heard this water music rushing in.
Sad and tragic story of that ship and crew. Even a song was made in his honor
That music was perfect for that. What is it called?
anyone ?
It's called music. You want to know the title.
@@amblt1 idiot
@@amblt1 yea idiot thats not the name
The music was completely unnecessary. The raw audio would have sufficed.
This film is dedicated to the thousands of men who served aboard her during her lifetime.
Cool to see how ships sink
can we get to see the full videos from the rooms during the sinking :D ?
Hi nickpDK. I'm be putting together a video of exactly that. Check back soon!! :-)

My god, the was the last thing many WW2 sailors saw. Horrific!
Everyone salute Steven
Future Generations: Ah yes little Jimmy this was the great battle of Halkett Bay where the Canadians made a last stand against their mortal enemy, the Canadian Geese.
Outstanding editing and the musical accompaniment was perfect!
A little lesson in nomenclature- it is not acceptable to put "the" in front of HMCS, HMS, HMAS, etc. The ship's name is written and spoken as either "HMCS (name)" or "The (name)".
wow she sunk fast
Song plis. ?
Something about a ship going down, one. Intentionally, is sad.
I wonder at what depth this beautiful piece of Naval history is laying in? Anyone know?
115ft (35m) at the rudders
Love these videos ! .....this one actually feels quite "tragic" in a strange way. Is it possible to watch these videos and NOT take a gulp of breath as water submerges the view ???
Yeah, it is possible.
I swear people dont understand what an artificial reef is
I can see how it would really suck to get torpedoed now, that sunk pretty quick
My understanding is that they cut a lot of holes in the ship to make it sink faster, both internally to allow water to pass between compartments normally sealed from each other, and externally just above the water line so that once it sinks just a little bit water can pour in. Far from seaworthy, and much more vulnerable than would be in service. Prepared so just a few charges can bring it down quickly. Any merchant or naval vessel would sink far slower than this unless specifically made to sink fast.
A modern torpedo (not like what you are used to seeing in the movies) would probably sink something like this that fast. But outside of that, look at the damage to the USS Cole.
I live right next to the wreck
now run it in reverse with the Star Blazers theme synched up over it
1:10 Why didn't you dismantle the machinery?
Dmitry Jikharev
Well just an old transmission. Like someone going to buy that..
They didn't take it out because it would have been too costly and not worth the effort. Since the engine room is located below the superstructure (the bridge, navigation rooms, state rooms, etc.), they would have had to cut away all of it just to get access to the engine room. After that they would have had the massive job of removing the huge network of pipes, valves, pumps, boilers, and turbines. It's just easier to drain the system of all the toxic crap and then just sink her.
The fish are gonna call someone on the overside of the earth with the communication tower
cameraman survived
Почему топять корабли? Ведь там столько качественного металла. Не выгоднее ли его пустить на переплавку?
Dude it's flooding so fast
Do scuba divers have to social distance?
Only if they don't wear their masks
she kinda went down like Lusitania
Never Heard Of This Ship
did anyone find the diamond ring they hid on board for some lucky diver?
Aren't most of the Canadian Navy's ships sunk? This one is different because it was intentional?
Que manera de desperdiciar el acero.
There go a bunch of cameras.
I'm curious. Do they remove all the fuel, gases, and oils before scuttling? Is rust okay for the ocean?
TXejas19 TXejas19 Yes, everything that is potentially toxic to the sea is removed. All gases and fuels are taken out immediately.
They also remove anything that can be "recycled" for other ships in the fleet. They tear apart the large machinery, clean it thoroughly, remove cables, wires, piping and anything else that could be a hazard to divers. The process can take years. Yes, rust is fine, it's a natural reaction anyway.
They drop old cars to form new reefs so rust is great.
Rust is actually very good for the ocean floor as the organisms that start up coral swarm to it
how do you get the procam out of the angineroom
They were all GoPro's. Easy to retrieve after the sinking.
Get the hammer and wedges lads...
And lots of oakum!
Music

if theres one thing I need to say on this video: Poor Go Pro

Scuttling of* HMCS Annapolis. There should be no “the” there.
It's been 5 years who caaaares

Could have been more dramatic. Why so many explosions ?
7 openings on each side were cut by shape charges to sink the ship and timed slightly apart..
Lots of cameras
we dont say " the HMCS"....
They should have put hundreds of fake skeletons in the ship to scare the shit out of the scuba divers.
Так и засоряем воду и природу!
Ты идиот
Almost like the titanic
its not
the ship went down more similarly to the Lusitania, minus the heavy starboard list.
what is this aM NOT UNDERSTAND
I think that these honorable and beautiful boats should not sink them, it is an insult to all the work they did for the country, they should restore them and turn them into luxury yachts or exploration yachts and leave them as new so that they continue sailing and being pride for those who served by his side, when I have enough money I will.
Clearly you have never served in the Navy of any country. Ask any REAL sailor and they'll tell you that a warship is better sunk (either as an artificial reef or used as target practice in a SINKEX) then to be cut apart by a scrappers torch. My first ship, USS Constellation was scrapped and I can tell you this, I cried my eyes out when she entered the Port of Brownsville in Texas. My second ship, USS Nimitz will be decommissioned in a few years. Her "recycling" will take over a decade because she's nuclear, but her fate will be the torch in the end. You'll go broke on upkeep costs alone if you think you can restore and maintain one.
Greenpeace will deal with this issue!!!
omkar
What a waste! I would have loved to have her. I would have repainted and repaired her to be fully operational and use her for tours of historical war sites/ dive expeditions
Brandon Nance shut up😂🤣😂go paint your nails
so why didn't you make a buyers proposal when it was for sale?
That ship would cost millions to maintain every year
How much money do you have to spend on that idea?? Would take about 2 million bucks at least, if not more.
@@johnfranklin5277 add another 0 and your in the right area
Could do without the music
and like that, the canadian navy was totally defeated
They apologized for being in the way and took a swim.
We never seem to have any trouble finding junk to pollute are waters with
this isn't polluting
its called a reef
Doesn’t occur naturally, so it’s basically polluting the waters with unwanted trash.
It doesn't really do any bad as it is cleaned from harmful substances and small things a fish might swallow
Away the damage control party away.
Ummmmm… gonna take one helluva DC party! LOL!
@@jefflanduyt6750 yep. I'm already heading for my abandon ship station.
А потом они его обратно достанут и утилизируют, или оставят гнить на дне и отравлять воду..... 🤔
You can see all the asbestos fibres from the piping shower down when the explosion happens :/
Oooo::
so much for recycling our planets limited and precious resources
Seems like Russian singers 😂😂😂😂
These ships would better serve as Homeless shelters after modifications and removal of a lot of equipment.
A billion places out in the open oceans and seas and they scuttle it in a beautiful cove?
I wish that it was cut up!
Edit: Why is this highlighted?
Why anybody thinks that disposing of all that metal at the bottom of the sea is a good idea is beyond my comprehension.
Παν καλά γιατί το
Thousands of hours of preparation and then they forget to mount powerful underwater led lights to the cameras. WTF
How did a British ship get the name of Maryland's state capital?
Why they scuttle these ships on purpose? Why to the ocean? Why not dry dock and dissemble them? Why sunk them into the bottom?
Because it helps start up coral reefs, the organisms that grow coral are attracted to rusting iron, the fish are drawn to the ship as a place to hide, those things intermingle and give it some decades and boom, youve jumpstarted a reef
The fake static is annoying.
Could've melted the metal down and recycled it.
