  • How to pack a bug out bag. Survival skills and a good disaster preparedness plan are essential for survival in an emergency. I share my bug out bag contents and some must have survival gear suggestions. Having had to evacuate in the middle of the night twice before due to fire, I decided to share with you what I keep in my bug out bag in case of emergency.

Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were prudent. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the prudent took oil in flasks along with their lamps. Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the prudent, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the prudent answered, ‘No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. Later the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open up for us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour. Matthew 25V1-13

I have great sympathy for anyone who has lived through a home invasion . I sold all my guns when my daughter was born - flash Fwd. to she's a year & 1/2 old asleep - two men kicked in our front door . I grabbed a four ft. sword and stood in the shadow of a cut away where my daughter was sleeping & I started praying " Please Lord , don't make me have to take these guys lives . They came down the hallway & thankfully my simple brandishing sent them running . I served an entire enlistment no PTSD - that one event at home MUCH PTSD

    • @LiveReady
      @LiveReady  3 года назад +5

Hi Guy, this brings tears to my eyes. I know exactly. I still suffer from PTSD. I was ok after the first time. The second time I was home alone. By God's grace your daughter was too young to remember. I'm so sorry that you have to carry the burden. But it does make us who we are and I try to remind myself of 2 Timothy 1:7 - For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. I'll keep you in my prayers. I lived in SA for two years. What a beautiful country. I miss your accent too. I'm impressed with your loadout and the fact that you actually use it. It's a well thought-out kit. You have everything you need and nothing you don't. My bag weighs in at 25 pounds. Most people with little experience overpack without realizing how heavy a 40-50 pound pack becomes after an hour. I think 25 pounds is a bit much so I'm experimenting to figure out how to shave 5-10 pounds off. I'll get there. Thanks for your excellent channel!

    • @LiveReady

Hi James, thanks for your comment, whereabouts do you live now? I completely agree, don't take anything you don't need. The only hurdle is that we don't always know what we're packing for. We can take a good guess, but might end up cutting some important stuff. I love things that have duplicate functions and are minimalist. I think the best advice is for everyone to hone their skills, that way we need less equipment to do the job.

@@LiveReady Hoe gaan dit? I live in the U.S. now (in the state of Utah, just south of Salt Lake City). The mountains are beautiful here and right in everyone's back yard. In an hour you can be out in the middle of nowhere. Yep, the load challenge is real which is why I'm struggling to shed that last 5 lbs or so. I think the trick really is finding tools with multiple uses like your axe/saw. That is really cool. Right now I'm carrying a Gransfors Bruks axe and a Silky Gomboy saw. Effective, but heavy.

How fortunate that you're so near to nature. I have a special place in my heart for the Gransfors Bruks hatchet and I'm hoping to get one soon. And Silky saws are excellent quality. Unfortunately those are such critical items that we'd do ourselves a disservice by leaving them out, so I agree with you, keep the weight of necessary. I've been training with my bug out bag, carrying it on short day trips into the mountains to get used to the weight, that helps.

Two axioms of hiking......1) ounces (grams) = pounds (kilograms) & pounds (kilograms) = pain 2) Cotton is rotten (a synthetic material is much more breathable, wicks moisture away from your body better and helps prevent chafing; important for your base layer). I also feel like we missed out on foot care as well. I prefer 2 spare pairs of wool hiking socks and I often use a sock-liner to help prevent blisters. And don't forget moleskin and medicated foot powder type products (not sure what may be available internationally)....foot care is of critical importance when they become your primary method of transportation.

One painful lesson I learned with carrying a heavy bag was the dangers that comes with a heavy bag. I was on a 3 day loop in the Linville Gorge and on day 2 I broke my fibula down by the river simply by stepping off a two foot rock. The weight of the bag shifted to the left and carried me just an inch off my landing and I fractured my fibula. It was a long painful 14hr hike out of there. And since then I've traded in gear for more skills and lightened my load out quite a bit.

Hello, you have a really nice bag prepared there. I'm sorry to hear about the robbers that did that. It is detestable what is going on in SA. It makes me so mad to hear about that. I'm glad you were ok. As I was watching I noticed you have a big roll of rope that looks really heavy to carry. You might save some weight trading out the rope with a roll of microcord if available in your area it is very strong. Filtering water is very important. Maybe if you dont have one and you're able get yourself a sawyer sqeeze water filter and a couple of extra gaskets for it. I added a tube of antibotic ointment to my kit and a ace bandage. Superglue is useful too. You right about running out toliet paper however carrying a couple of washrags is not a bad idea you can designate one for you know what. If you can get the compressed hand towels they are small and don't weigh much. You can make soap out of natural plants ( see what trees and plants are available in your area ) or carry a tiny bottle of concentrated dr bronner's soap. Also you can shave off soap flakes and put them in a baggie. Thanks for the video. Look forward to seeing it set up in the bush.

Good morning Sparrow. Thanks for your feedback, those are some great suggestions. I think the items you've added to your bag will supplement your kit really well and ensure you've got everything you need. Antibiotic cream or anything with iodine in it will help you take care of wounds, good idea. I've heard of the Sawyer Squeeze as well as the Grayl Geopress. I think I'll add them to the gear recommendations on the Live Ready Website. You're right about plants for soap, there are a couple in SA and one grows in this area, it's scientific name is Morella Cordifolia (commonly known as the Wax berry or Wasbessiebos). I'll definitely start doing some vidoes on plants and their uses real soon. If you would like some more info and suggestions on survival and preparedness you can download the Live Ready Emergency Survival Guide from our website at www.liveready.co.za. Thanks. Survived two home invasions and now I'm hyper vigilant. Way too many people have a false sense of security because they have an alarm or a dog. If someone wants to get in they'll get through every security system you've got. You can take my word for it. Inside jobs are common.

I'm apparently hyper-vigilant too. I grew up in a brutal inner-city area and I can honestly say that I have been attacked with lethal intent (guns, knives, machetes, etc) at least 50X. I've been shot at 4X, but never hit.
In my younger days, I developed a method of awareness and engagement that specifically deals with doorways, people walking behind you, multiple attackers, and many other issues. The people behind me one has saved my life many times and at least 4X from the same guy. He was known for coming up behind and disemboweling people. Each of the 4X, he had his knife in hand, as I turned around. Eerie feeling to know that if I slipped up one of those times, I would have died a horrible death!
If we had the insanely violent types of home invasions you guys have, I would install a way to insure people cannot get in. I'd probably set some trip wires with flash-bangs on the doors. In close quarters, they are brutal! There are ways to trigger them remotely too. If a guy can't see or hear for 30min, it kind of throws off his game.
Please do all you can to make sure no one puts you in that position again!

You have a nice kit. I'd hate to bug out in the bush where you live with all the animals and snakes. Maybe I'm wrong but just being in the bush there seems like it would be pretty risky. I'm pretty lucky where I live there's really nothing dangerous in our woods besides a few kinds of snakes but even they aren't too bad. I use to have a few puff adders from Africa. Out of all my venomous snakes they were my favorite. But I wouldn't want to be walking around if they were about. Nice video! 😊

Hi there! Thanks for your comment. Our neighbour almost stepped on a berg adder the other day. They are all so lazy to move and would rather just bite you. It is risky with the wildlife, but honestly I've been in danger due to people more than animals. Amazing that you kept the puffies, they are truly gorgeous creatures. Enjoy the outdoors, glad to hear that you keep safe out there. C

@@LiveReady I understand about people being dangerous over there. I had a good friend living there and she had a few dangerous encounters. She actually had to shoot a guy that pulled a knife on her. Sadly she passed last year and I still miss talking to her. She constantly tried talking me into coming there but after everything she had told me I knew better. We have plenty of dangerous people here as well. She believed it was actually more dangerous in the States than it was there. It all depends on where you live really.
The puff adders I had weren't very active, they pretty much laid around waiting for me to feed them. That's when they displayed how fast they could be. They strike so fast you can't really see nothing but the blur.
I would reach into most of my tanks to change the water but not their tank. Most rattlesnakes aren't that fast and it's easy to avoid their bites if you know how to deal with them. Not so with the puff adders. If you are within range it's pretty much impossible to avoid getting bit.
I miss working with them, I'm kind of a adrenaline junkie. When I moved to Missouri I had to get rid of my collection because it's highly regulated here and I didn't feel like dealing with constant inspections.
I'd probably invest in a good pair of snake boots if I lived there. Better safe than sorry. Have a great day and take care. 😊

Although I think you find crime just about everywhere. The snakes have all disappeared now, it's a bit cold for them as we're going into winter. I've had a look at snake gaiters and they're definitely a good investment. Your stories about the snakes you've had are amazing, typical lazy puff adders!

Great ideas. But putting medical last, was not the brightest idea. Shelter, water, food, fire and medical. Add to it tools, food preps, like pan and pots, and even water containers. Expand from there. I usually carry 9 black bags, to use as shelter. Lighter than tarp, ans use with a emergency blanket, will keep you warm. You should show us your expertise in the field. That would be very interesting.

Hi Stefan, thanks for your comment. You have a wonderful plan to improvise and to underline your point a lot of people have made use of the insulating properties of plastic bags in an emergency. I'll do a separate video on medical kits, I work in the medical field and have dealt with my share of emergencies. I think we would be surprised to find how few people actually carry a medical kit in their car or in their bag when they're out in the bush. Keep watching for the next video.

Hi Anton, thanks for watching. No doubt being able to defend your territory will be important under certain circumstances, however there are people who prepare for natural disasters who will not need firearms. In that case the gear is important, look at the flooding we had in KZN. Carrying a firearm during civil unrest like during the looting would be wise, but that would fall under your every day carry, not really something to be stored in a bug out bag. Keep an eye out for a video scheduled to come up in the next few months called bug out system. In that video I discuss a more comprehensive system and I touch on firearms and home defense. @RobJ, A person is allowed to carry a firearm for self defense provided that the firearm is licenced for that purpose and remains concealed on your person at all times. Separate firearms may be licenced for hunting. However acquiring a licence of any sort is a frustrating process that can take years and there have been talks by government of revoking private firearm licences. This is met with resistance from a large population of people who do currently have private licences.
