I can relate to your comment so much! I was obsessed with drawing in high school, I was the most confident I'd felt about my progress back then. I now have two children, and really feel like getting back to my old artistic self again. I just really wish I kept all of my art from when I was younger, but I sadly lost it all :(

Something that has greatly helped me is to make an art journal and just shit sketch it. It still takes me a long time and it still bothers me to see mistakes, but setting the intention of drawing without it being perfect helps before I start drawing. I just shit sketch something that happened in the day and that's it. No good anatomy, no perfect lines, nothing. Just sketch.

Honestly, this made me consider trying to finally beat the writers block I've been fighting for months now. Sometimes I get too frustrated when I see people write better things than me, when i read stories I compare myself to them, but just recently I took it as a lesson, that if I wanna become successful, I should continue doing what I do until everything comes naturally and- of course- with time!

As an artist I’ve always had trouble with comparing myself to other creators. And when I do that I find it harder to create art when I constantly worry about every little detail of someone else’s work. I’ve learned that experimenting and putting assets of other people’s work into your own can really help you improve your art, and more importantly stop comparing yourself to others.

When you're a perfectionist you view drawing as a scheme and try to operate with your neocortex. Which tends to analyze, think through and create patterns and schemes. This can include ocd which makes you to control every detail of your drawing process.
When you have a certain set of drawing skills operating via neocortex creates a disfunctional splitting in your thinking process. Because those skills come from another part of a brain than neocortex. You can even physically feel this splitting sometimes.
Basically there's a physiological reason behind this kind of an art block.
Operating with your "creativity zone" of a brain creates a fluid stream of drawing without perfectionist blocks. Trust this part of you. You don't have to control it.
Turn off your neocrtex while drawing. Another part of your brain where all visual library and creativity sit knows what it's doing.
After a piece is finished ONLY THEN you can analyze and think through all the mistakes with your analytical part of a brain.
I noticed only highly empathetic people struggle with this kind of an art block. Because we all have high levels of self reflection. That can be a pain in the as%. By overanalyzing you limit your creative self. Drawing is not a scheme. It never meant to be.
This realization helped me to get rid of this problem. Hope it helps you as well.

im dumb and only understood until neocortex but i stopped drawing for a very long time because i was to much of a perfectionist to start bad and get better at drawing, cause i would draw from videos and it would be pretty good but as soon as i draw from a picture or imagination it was really bad and i would grt frustrated and just quit but im getting better at being patient now ans got back into drawing

this video really got me out of the mindset that i have to make it perfect. i have been searching for this video for a while bc i wanted to make a comment to tell you that this really helped me. i really wasnt liking my art for a while and was struggling with art block because my drawing wasnt enough like the reference or it wasnt stylized enough but after i saw this it took me out of that mindset, and i loosened up and didnt obsess over the tiny details and i am loving what im creating a lot more. thank you :) it really cured how i viewed my work.

Yesterday I was having a really hard time, I broke down because I haven’t been able to draw lately. I threw my entire sketch book away. So what’s amazing is I am awake here at 5:41am scrolling through shorts, and I see this. I realize for me it’s when I get to a place in my drawing where I get stuck I don’t push thru it instead I avoid it. I think personally it’s also from before with ppl in my family trying to take up my time with my art goals and maybe it is a stress now to where it’s like why finish ima keep getting interrupted. Now I have maintained space with family. Sad that family will keep you from flying high to your goals.

You have to learn from your road blox, as an artist I see to many people focus on the details and it gets hard using a reference and learning from it. Now we all just so dependent on references and when we don’t use one we draw the same thing. The main idea is to simply and see the bigger picture. so don’t take those road blox as a way to give up. Use it to learn and grow.
