Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary in foul-mouthed rant at UK air traffic controllers' 'bulls**t'

- The UK’s air traffic control (ATC) system is the worst in Europe, the boss of Ryanair has claimed.
Michael O’Leary made the comment as he launched a tirade calling for National Air Traffic Services (Nats) chief executive Martin Rolfe to be sacked.
The news comes just a day after Ryanair launched a flash sale with cheap flights to destinations like Spain, Italy and the UK from as little as €24.99.
According to Ryanair’s website, the discounted flights will be available at Dublin Airport, Kerry Airport, Knock Airport, Cork Airport and Shannon Airport.
The discounted flights from Dublin include destinations such as the UK, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Cyprus and Bulgaria.

The revenue tired to screw a million out of JP a few years back and so he moved. But that little fact is of course left out of the story. They did the same to several high profile people in Ireland. When my dad inherited the family farm they sent him a tax bill for 20,000 pounds in the early 80's. Revenue are scam artists and I'd only ever deal with them via a solicitor or an accountant.
At least JP actually does give money to charity and sporting organisations instead of pretending he does like Sean Quinn did.

As an American living in Ireland for some time, Michael has been a hero of mine from shortly after arrival. Its surprising that more Irish folks don’t hold him in high regard.

I flew to Ireland for £14. AND £3 return with Ryan air in 2007 I love this man he is revolutionary in the airline business.

At age 19 in 1980 I bought my first return ticket to Ireland. Aer Lingus APEX fare (advanced purchase excursion). You booked it three months in advance and it was a use it or lose it deal. It was £73 - a very high percentage of my take home monthly income at the time. I'd feel annoyed with myself if I couldn't fly for less now - 43 years later. Imagine how much Aer Lingus (and the rest) would be charging now if Ryanair hadn't come along? They needn't bother trying to suggest they offer a more standard (as opposed to no frills low cost) service either. They all charge for bags, booking seats, using credit cards, service fees (??), non standard hold items, in flight catering etc.

He's a proper CEO. His brilliance has led to Irish people enjoying cheap travel. Yes, there's no frills but I'd rather a half price flight without the "free tea". Well done Michael. How I wish you could sort out the inefficiency that plagues our hospitals and civil service. NO BS, straight to the point, how refreshing. Long live the King. (ps and i still say that after being delayed 2 hours 30mins in Luton on Sunday night)

It's not half price. A flight to London wasn't from about 1000 Irish pounds (1720 euros) to about 20 euros. It's just that he made the whole industry cheaper.
@@jimmyryan5880 I am 70 y and my memory is of a flight to London from Dublin costing around 200 punts one way back around the early 80 s with Aer Lingus .A huge sum in those days .My weekly wage in London in 1984 was £60 as a barman in a Hotel living in .

None of this is correct. I work in the industry, and all he is trying to do is scare people away from booking easyJet from Gatwick in the hopes they book Ryanair from Stansted. It’s 100% about business. NATS also run the tower at Stansted but I see he didn’t mention that once. O’Leary is very clever at spinning the media into a massive advertising machine for his company and unfortunately it looks like you’ve been drawn in

As a person with a business back ground you have to admire his straight no nonsense talk , those who seek to protect the status quo obviously don't like him-this includes inefficient organisations/ management, unions that don't like change. Private enterprise is very different to the inefficient state run bodies, hiring a bunch of people from state run companies smacks of cronyism. I will say the one negative about him is he drives shareholder value a little too much at times to the expense of employees.
He has won me over many moons ago. I love his no nonsense approach.

That airline was caught deliberately keeping passenger groups apart to get people to pay to seat together. Thankfully I have and never will grace that piece of .... with my custom.

@@fergie1910 Not sure I understand. 15 minute city doesn't mean you don't have the freedom to go anywhere, it just means you have all the amenities you need within a 15-minute walk. This is really common in Europe, where I live, but in America - a nation which embraced the car industry, you cannot walk anywhere in many cities.

The thing is, if he became Leader of Ireland he would have to sack ALL the civil service and make them reapply for their jobs on new terms. Private pensions, sacked if not performing etc. All ex TD's would need their pensions "shaved" ... in solidarity 😀. Better still, just give them all the state pension. This crap with a top heavy ineffective civil service and then a private sector with many people having feic all rights to sick leave etc needs to be equalised. A report just out said as much, the most attractive jobs are semi state and civil service -> because you don't have to work
I recall a chat I had with a trainer in the State training agency back in 2009. He found that the biggest drawback in the job was the waste and the number of his colleagues who did the bare minimum, sometimes nothing, and were not sanctioned for this non performance. In stark contrast I worked my entire life in non-unionised private companies which had very strict KPI's and accountability and pay for performance. This system only partly worked in that favourites and cronies could game the system and pull ahead of genuine hard workers. Also taking credit for others work was rife in those places. Responsible trade unions are needed in the workplace but also responsible management to stop corruption and cronyism.@@DodgyTodger

I worked with a guy with similar work ethic and abhorrence for slacking and incompetence as MOL. On his honeymoon he cut the time short and returned to his job because he couldn't stand the idea of 2 weeks idleness. Luckily his wife had the same idea about work and money and they ended up with a chain of groceries in my home town.
Imagine how quick he could turn this country around if he got a chance.

Good question. I'm an ex NATS air traffic controller. 5 % Ownership of NATS by staff, but virtually no staff voice or representation. I attended an AGM after jumping through many Monty python style hoops years ago. Fun but farce at same time.
A relic of the 1980s with a few expensive rebrandings. Front line staff great...otherwise a flawed set up and culture at the top..

He’s a bit of Bollix but God you have to love him. More of him is needed.
Sometimes a bollix is needed to get things done and weed out inefficiencies and downright corruption, price fixing and cronyism in the modern workplace, not to mention the politics, back-biting and bitterness lazy mediocre people have for people who actually do the work. People might hate MOL, they may even fear him but things will get done and moved mostly on time and in budget.
I recall a recent conversation I had where a lady aspired to be a hostess with the National Flag Carrier, Aer Lingus, She was turned down because of poor marks in Irish. This is the way State Sponsored companies think, turning down good candidates because of lack of knowledge of a near dead language which would be totally irrelevant to their job. Ryanair do not engage in such nonsense, hopefully they pay their staff while on the ground during turnarounds as I hear some low-cost US airlines only start the pay clock when actually flying.
If Ryanair had any decency they would "F - OFF" and shut up shop. Has a frequent flyer i would never use Ryanair again no matter what extra cost was involved
