  • Husband and wife team, farmers Mike Guebert and Linda Bangs live on 10 acres of land, raising and tending to a variety of livestock. Currently, they have 2 Jersey cows, and 40 goats that provide raw milk; about 250 laying chicken hens for eggs, and 800 chickens for (meat) broilers; and 5 turkeys: 4 hens, and one happy tom. Oh yes, and not to forget, 2 heritage breed pigs, and just the day before we arrived this spring (2012), they picked up 14 wiener pigs.
    This is a snapshot moment of life on their farm, and their story.

    I love the advice "start small", but may have taken it too literally ;). I live on a quarter acre suburban lot We wanted a farm, but couldn't afford to move, and so we decided to work with what we had, where we are, and have been farming our yard. We're not farmers and will never make a living with what we raise, but it feeds us delicious, wholesome (safe) food, and that's all I wanted anyway. I think the bottom line is anyone can raise food - anywhere. Thanks for the inspirational film.

    I think , this becomes the future if we still want healthy food and no environmental problems!! We have to go back to small scale. Really my grandfather was a carpenter but he had a vegy. garden and raised 2 or 3 piggies each year on a very small place !! I just want to get started!!!

    I envy people who make a living this way.....I suppose the only thing it needs to be completely self sustainable is to grow some grain for pig feed?....I think this is the way Mother Nature intended us to live.....

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 7 лет назад +10

      Actually... swine did not evolve to eat much, if any, grain. There is a farm in Vermont that feeds their hogs and pigs no grain at all. They live outdoors year around in herds with a boar, and have portable shelters. The sows decide when to have litters. Spring through fall they get most of their food from the pasture and woodlot, and in winter they get hay. Year around they get some whey from a local cheese plant. I think he also feeds some drops from nearby orchards in the fall, and maybe some other produce.After years of selecting for calm, healthy animals that take good care of their young (sows that squash piglets are fattened up and butchered after they finish raising their litters, and none of their offspring are kept for breeding), this farm raised some low-maintainance pork! All grain-free.If we raise our animals the way Mother Nature intended (as much as possible within the confines of the modern world in whatever area we live) then it is not as hard as so many people think for us humans to also live the way Mother Nature intended! Hope you can, too, one day - if that is what you want to do.

      Pigs don't eat grain. They eat food waste. Rinds, peels, clippings off vegetables and fruits, stuff that would normally go in compost. It's called slop

    I loved this video brings a lot of memories for me growing up in rural Zimbabwe where everything we ate was organic and tasty. Then I landed in America one day I literally had to live on bread and peanut butter for over 5yrs coz every thing tasted different and couldn't handle it. Fast forward Im now adjusted and can handle any thing but can tell the difference though.

    Hi VegaChastain, I'm the filmmaker. I've done stories on other small livestock farmers and one book in particular that helped a couple get started was 'You Can Farm' by Joel Salatin. They also went to apprentice at his farm years ago [with kids in tow!]. I'm not sure this would be a fit for you, but I know many farm interns go on to start their own farm. Start small is another piece of advice I hear from many. Hope this helps a little.

    Years ago a successful diversified farmer applied for a loan for a new tractor as his old one was suffering metal fatigue. The bank sent out an agronomist who told him how to farm if he wanted the loan. There went the beef cattle, the replacement cows, the hogs. The hayfield was plowed down - it was all about growing wheat. Two years later he had to sell off 1/2 section because of bad weather and having nothing to fall back on.

    Dad was a research executive at Auburn University and tried farming. He found you have to have enough cash flow and if not you may have to eat your way out of the farm by harvesting everything. The bad sign was when folks wanted to dump their chickens on you. But it's fun while it lasts.

The only issue I have is the ethical dilemma of raising animals purely for the purpose of food. I feel like I would bond with the animal and then not be able to part ways when the time came. Thoughts?

    Yeah like if u feed them feeds high in carbs this can lead to ruminitis eventually death of the cow cause it decreases the acid of the stomach below pH 5 and and overgrowth of bad bacteria begins such as f.neosporum this then goes to the liver and abscess forms...blockage of the vena cava leading to thrombosis in the heart etc..so not only feed hardware diseases also even overfeeding can lead to these issues.....they are gentle Giants that one has to care for carefully i love cows and horses big animals that need gentle care.
