    I started about 5 years ago with beef cattle. Owning a horse ranch I had some extra space and figured I’d give it a shot. I bought 2 Angus bottle calves and that was short lived, so after that I took time to study more. I had a friend with a registered organic Holstein dairy farm and he had one of his cows bred to a registered Angus bull, that produced an all black bull calf. Just about 3 months prior to this I had traded a horse for 2 purebred Hereford heifers. So me and my buddy worked out a deal on a goal for the calf and some hay. I brought the little bull home which ended up being his name although he wasn’t little for long lol. He has been doing his job producing really nice calves and he is the most gentle bull I’ve met. He has got out plenty of times to go introduce himself to the ladies down the road but other then that he’s been great.

      Thats is awesome! My parents started out picking up Holstein bull cafes cheap from the dairy farm the transitioned to Herefords. We love them and that's all my parents have now. George the bull is still gentle. He scares me but just because he is over 2000 pounds lol

    I would suggest saving some of your bean and pea seeds when you harvest them at the end of the summer, this way you will have the ones you want and save some money each time.
    I try to save a few beans and peas once I pick the pods each summer, they just needs to be put someplace to dry out then you can remove the seeds from the pods and put them away for next year.
    The same with pumpkin and squash seeds, put aside a few seeds from your favourites each year.

    Great video, those bulbs are prolly not even giving half the lumens you need for lettuce, why it's so leggy. You could tray mixing color on that setup and switching one of the bulbs to a red flowering bulb but I'm not sure that would work very well either. Lettuce grows better with the red or purple spectrum, it's a cool weather plant.

    I came across miniature cows, at first I thought it was fake but I Googled it and yeah they are very real. They grow to the size of a large dog and I thought that would be perfect for 3 acres but then I checked out the price of these mini cows and they cost more than regular cows. The upside is they need a lot less food, water, and room.

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  2 года назад +1

      We have seen some mini cows. They are pretty cool. You are right less room and less feed but also less beef but sometimes that's ok because you can feed your family and not worry about trying to get sell 1000 lbs. of beef. Everything is a tradeoff but for 3 acres I would really look into it.

      Some people want grain fed beef for the marble and taste others like grass fed. We can do grain fed pretty easy.

    Nice video. Good looking steers. I had to hunt around on the internet to find the pole beans I like. My regular suppliers were out. The local feed & seed are not sure if they will have any this year. I’ll be glad when things get back to normal.

      Thank you! And that is crazy. We really like the fortex pole beans, so hopefully I can find them some where else since Johnny's seeds is out. I need to finish up getting my flower seeds now. I understand why more people are starting gardens, but I can't wait for it to be normal again too!

      @@HomegrownPassion Bummer! We tried Rattlesnake pole beans this past year with good results. With the local feed & seed unsure if they can get more I ordered some from this place www.rhshumway.com/. Never bought from them before so I’m hopeful for a good germination.

    Is that half steer per year with your chickens or do you eat beef exclusively?

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  4 месяца назад +1

      Great question! We actually balance both in our diet. The half steer gives us a good supply of beef, while the chickens provide fresh eggs. It's a nice mix!

      Hi Preston...so its not a real big business but we do make enough selling the beef to family and friends to justify raising cattle. Mom and Dad have a bigger operation with a bull on the farm so they do better than i do. I think beef is going up in the future so I hope you are successful......good luck!!!
