He proves that you can detect an underdeveloped brain even without an MRI scan.
I was diagnosed at 42. Now I understand why I do. what I do. I went home and cried because I finally had answers
My best friend is currently in the formal diagnosis portion of her ADHD journey, she is a year younger than you.
The relief she feels at simply being acknowledged is palpable, and finally being in the position to DO SOMETHING about it is clearly improving her overall mental health. She's been crying too.
Wishing you much success and hope you receive your long overdue answers and the treatment and relief you (and she) deserve!
Adhd is a gift. Never forget that!
@@Phil-tc6pxHow??
Does this somehow lead to treatment? Because it seems to me like all that's been accomplished is you now know how to address your demons.
I was diagnosed mat 42. I felt the same.
This is possibly the weirdest produced video I've seen from the BBC in a while. It feels likeba mockumentary
this is a documentary bro 😭 stop trying to flirt(flirt???) with the doctor
He can't he has ADHD.
Speaking of poor impulse control...
@@h347h so do I, it just seems absurd in a documentary as well
@@StopWhining491 I say swap out regular programming for full adhd cast and crew then film the catastrophe that ensues, now that's prime telly
good one 👍@@nevreiha
I've just been diagnosed with ADD at 48 thanks to my kids' school requesting them to be tested. It felt validating to know my limitations was not because of laziness.
Usually related to video game or social media addiction.
He didn't understand anything she said.
Why is this researcher acting like ADHD is one size fits all? ADHD manifests in a variety of ways
no excuse, but it's from 7 years ago
@@opliko that’s important context, thanks!
I agree and everyone can learn and improve traits in their own way.
She did say it, pay attention.
"This is the typical task we do in an MRI scanner, with children with ADHD and normal children"
Ouch
They're making a distinction between typical and atypical because ADHD is a medical diagnosis not a personality trait. You have to be impaired to get a medical diagnosis. There's nothing wrong with stating that fact. I have Asperger's syndrome myself and i have impairments. Doesn't mean I'm not competent or good at anything though. There's also people with much higher support requirements than i and it would be a travesty to keep the narrative of it's just a difference when it isn't and they require support.
Thank you! I don't like it when I see people acting like it's just this "quirky" thing. I have reeeally bad ADHD and I need a lot of help to do a lot of things. I wish I didn't, but I do. But there are people that have ADHD that don't need as much help. Everyone is different. But one thing all us neurodivergent people have in common is that it's an impairment, not a fun thing.
I hope I read your comment correctly AND communicated this correctly. I'm trying to think through some pretty heavy brain fog.
He fully mocked her accent to her face 😂
It doesn't excuse his behaviour in the video, but the host in the video is Rory Bremner, a famous UK comedian and impersonator/impressionist.
This piece literally did not answer the question it proposed. I actually now have more questions.
Did it fail?
This was far too short of a video. Where can I see the whole episode?
I genuinely have ADHD and I'm trying to mitigate the stupid actions and crap that falls from my lips and the more information and understanding I have the more Adult like I can be, even though I am by all accounts an Adult.
Just imagine being 45 and everyone looking at you like you're no more than 18 or 19.
It's in the title dude, BBC Horizon. It's an old episode from 2017, prob not worth watching
the Dr. Russell Barkley playlist is far better than this to understand more and there's even advice & tricks to manage our ADHD.
How To ADHD is also a great, super helpful channel. please go check them out!
@@moonhajung6742 I will. Thank you. I was diagnosed only recently so I'm still learning what is actually going on. Not the lies told to me in school just to sell Ritalin. I don't think drugs are the answer and the brain scans seem to support that. I figured since the path is either under developed or just not there then what is a drug going to do, exactly what they have been, nothing. Because I really imbue the H part I and everyone else I know thought that it was an overdeveloped gland or something like that. Bit of a shock to be honest.
But thank you for the advice, I will get right on that.
Sincerely
Steve Staley.
a mite past 60 here. and I never knew I had this; knowing that it is a thing, and that it is my thing, sure explains alot

Some BBC productions seem to have extremely un-BBC accountability these days. An above comment mentioned “Mocumentary” seems precise and valid.
I just got diagnosed. After 50 it feels like vindication to get a diagnosis. Imposing norms shouldn’t be the standard response to differences.
A surprisingly bad video by the BBC.
From the weird presenter to the lack of scientific backing to the odd choices in words (although that might in part be a language barrier thing) this was just hard to watch.
So what does one do to inhibit poor impulse control of you have ADHD? Is it a matter of metacognition and restructuring though processes?
I'm appalled at the rudeness and sexist behavior towards the doctor.
Ppl like you are a cancer to this world, always offended by everything, thinking ur spoiled bratty view of the world is the one everyone must adhere to and follow because otherwise the woke mob will label them sexist or racist or some other nonsense. You children think u can just elect yourselves the moral dictators of the world because ur emotional and weak. Being weak doesn't at all make you a moral person.
A guy being weird and lame isn't sexist. You don't need to react to everything or have a "stance" on everything, the world collectively is screaming at you to fuck off wit ur moral superiority complex, nobody wants ur input you already proved your evil destructive intentions
I was diagnosed with adhd years ago, yet taken it off yet suspected autism, yet symptoms are similar. I could go but it's a joke 2 half years for autism test, big pharma don't profit. Buddhist practice helps but still homeless half my life failings ov a broken system.
Co lab exeter never got 717 after care, blood money.
More like an intro of an 70,s adult movie
Is there any comedian that doesn't have ADHD?
"underdeveloped" lol
Yep Ihave Rubella Syndrome so my ADHD behaviors are really not that surprising to me. I’d be surprised if I had a fairly normal brain. A conversation with me is all over the ballpark unfortunately. Sorry.
“Compare to healthy brains”????
That's what I was wondering. I've always thought of ADHD as different, not faulty.
You're right, of course. "Neurotypical" would be a better word. She's a scientist more concerned with her research than with inclusive language. But she does have a lot to say that's helpful. I hope you won't throw out the baby with the bathwater.
No need to feel bad. I did quite a lot of study myself as my 7yo diagnosed with ADHD and taking daily pills for over a year now. Is fact that ADHD brain has part that underdeveloped than peers but also part that developed too soon than normal child. That's the reason why they're impulsive, naughty, refuse to follow order in nature as they get distracted easily
Yes I heard this and very much disliked it
Same as being gay or anything else. There is a biological norm and then there is an abnormality. It doesn't make abnormal something bad necessarily, its just a statement of a fact from a biological stand point.
well at 6mins that was just comedy, is that what the BBC and Horizon has come to, not surprised at all.
is that simply some harmless flirting by a married man... if it's on camera??🤔 his scans be all lit up!
Amazing video thanks. But the narrator should be sacked.
This woman needs to learn to replace the words 'normal' and 'healthy' especially with neurotypical (and neurodiverse as the opposite)
Lost me when she compared ADHD children to "normal" children. Precision of language is important. Variation in a human population is normal.
I bet u find everything offensive. We all wonder if u offended ppl will ever break out of the spell and return to being sensible, reasonable ppl. Propaganda scared ppl into a defensive shell state of mind and then made it seem like being offended by stuff is normal but its not normal at all. Ur prolly in a super suggestive state. Propaganda owns you. Turn back now if u want to stop empowering propaganda agents and doing damage to ur country
This is the first time I've said it. Boomers😮😢 plus the lack of info period. Science is having information.
Just got to be careful of shitty parents saying they think their child has ADHD. “No Chardonnay, your child is like that because they see Mummy set a bad example” worked in a special school for years with children with behaviour difficulties and 99.9 percent it was always the parent fault.
99.9% is almost never scientific. But do please cite your research..
I used to interrupt all the time just like him. Its an Adhd impulsive trait.
"attractive": also my first thought... (she knew that damn well)
Interesting would be taking the arrow test for left-handers vs. right.
I HAVE ADHD AND LOVE BBC BUT NOT THE CHANNEL 😏
😂😂😂😂😂😂👍🏾
Oh great race bait fetish garbage
So when I was young and was not paying attention or focused, a quick slap to the back of the head got me right back on track, no further issues
I'm sorry that happened to you. Though honestly that sounds like the dream, I have ADHD and no amount of child abuse ever worked on me for more than 20 seconds. Curing it with a few slaps would've been amazing.
Honestly give me a time machine and I'd go back and pull out every one of my fingernails if it would've cured my ADHD.
@@TheHDreality sorry for you but I don’t buy it
The problem with phrases like "underdeveloped" or "disabled" is that it implies there is only one way to exist in our cookie-cutter society.
Not saying that some neurodiverse folks can't have underdeveloped brains, or struggle with basic tasks, but that plenty of neurodiverse folks are capable of incredible things, and grouping everyone as underdeveloped is doing more harm than good.
When we create a society that treats everyone with respect, and empowers them, we create a better society.
(My opinion!) I would personally argue that the word disabled fits as otherwise the word has no use whatsoever. For example those who use wheelchairs would not be disabled if the world was without stairs (I have ADHD and am a wheelchair user). It's just a useful term to have to let others know you may need some extra support to function as easily in day-to-day life.
@@Sylvestriss_disability is not a dirty word, autism is a medical diagnosis as is adhd and it's an important distinction
@@initial_kd I never said disability is a dirty word, I personally am mentally and physically disabled. You misread or I wasn't clear. The person in the post above says they don't like the word disabled.
Also most (if not all) disabilities are medical diagnoses,so the second part of your comment doesn't make a huge amount of sense.
To clarify, you don't have to see yourself as disabled if you are neurodivergent, I just see it as a good word. In fact I would argue the reason why a lot of people who are neurodivergent don't call themselves disabled is likely because of some internalised ableism.
Those without adhd are so obviously the ones who are disabled.
I don't know about those tests because I bet most of the population, myself included would diagnose with ADHD.
ADHD is a fictional condition 😮
I used to think that until I tried one of my brothers meds. He takes them and then is able to sit and focus for hours which he can’t usually do. I can usually focus just fine. I took one of his meds and I was pinging off the walls, couldn’t sit still, couldn’t focus, couldn’t stop talking. Exactly like being on speed. If it was a made up condition then the meds wouldn’t affect people differently depending on if they have adhd or not.
@@asahdoabsolutely. Many people have baseless opinions. That's fine except when they cling to them when confronted with science to the contrary.

Wow! So if something makes you feel bad, it is automatically unworthy of respect, regardless of it being true or not. All that matters is comfort here and now, truth is irrelevant, or worse there is no truth, just feelings and subjectivity.
