The first movement sounds like the nightmare of every string quartet. He makes a string quartet sound like a string orchestra of symphonic proportions.
it was a nightmare when I played it. We practiced it so much though that we eventually got it down. Cant believe I played it freshman year of highschool.
I really appreciate the way Debussy experients and develops the main theme in the first movement, almost like hearing an enormous riff being masterfully improvised for 6 minutes straight.
This incredibly passionate and musical performance of Debussy's great Quartet by The Kodály Quartet is like hearing it for the first time, an amazing experience.
It’s just my favourite quartet. I think it’s that Debussy was still very impressionistic with his harmonies but still respected the fragility of a string quartet and it resulted in this well-structured but beautifully harmonized piece of music.
This was one of the first quartets i played, I absolutely love this piece, how everything fits together. No matter how many times I listen to it or play it, it never gets boring. This quartet gives me a distinct vibe. It feels as if I'm on a ship on the ocean. I tend to get that feeling with most french composers. 2nd movement is really fun along with 4th. The following is from a first violinist viewpoint: Movement 1 gives me a ship vibe. i really like the beginning of it moving to the solo. 0:43 is hard but really satisfying to play. Header 1 is also cool. 1:34 is fun to play. 2:06 is really cool. 2:36 is fun. Small blurps at header 4 are cool. Header 5 is really fun to play those double stops. 5:35 juggling solos is cool. Very ending is cool. Movement 2 is probably my favorite one to play because the rhythm and timbre of the viola and pizzicato. I like the offbeats at 6:36 and 6:44, they're fun to finger. I really love to play the 16th notes. The small blurps at 8:13 are cool. 8:27 is also really fun. Header 11 with the offbeats again. 9:34 is a cool way to end. 3rd movement is majestic. Although its slow its still very beautiful. I love the juggling solos and the crescendo at 12:16 13:43 is a really fun duet and then the viola comes in with its solo and then cello. and then at header 13 the rhythms get a little hard. 14:52 is very fun and then at 14:58 I love how the cello harmonizes with the solo. Header 14 is a really nice break to wash it all down, and it's perfectly placed if you ask me. The very ending of 3rd sounds really nice. Intro of 4th movement sounds perfect. I love playing the double stops at 18:19. I like header 15 buildup 19:36 is fun to play if you get it right. For me, it's pretty hard. 20:05 is really really fun to play. I love the harmonies at 20:18. 20:50 is really fun to play. Key change fits perfectly at 21:17. 21:43 is really fun for me. I don't know why I like chromatic scales so much. I like the duet at 21:58. The dissonance works out alot at 22:13. At header 21, I like the stacking there and the violins doing the triplets and quarters. 23:01 sounds like a complete key change. I really like it. Especially the part at 23:05. 23:17 is a little hard for me but it sounds really good. 23:20 double stops are REALLY fun to play for me. I really like header 23. Especially the part where you shift up to the C. Header 24 has got to be, by far one of the greatest endings in all of quartet history. 24:40 and triplets at the end are cool. So, in conclusion, it has got to be one of my favorite string quartets by far. Everything fits together so perfectly. I wish Debussy made more

The quartet is a great example of how Debussy would taylor his compositions to a particular idiom. Here, he composes not only FOR a string quartet, but creates music that comments on, and plays with, the form and texture of string quartets in general. He is, in essence, making a 'meta-reference' to the form itself as created by its classical progenitors. In this sense, he is truly one of the creators of 20th century music,
I mean, I like this piece too but I have no idea in what way this was some meta statement and "comments on the history of string quartets" and I'm not entirely sure you do either.
Revisiting this masterpiece because I had the melody at 14:52 stuck in my head and specifically the bit at 14:57 makes me think of Dvorak for some reason ❤
It has indeed a kind of modal sound that Dvorak used in his "American" Quartet, and in his "New World" Symphony. Some well trained ears you've got there, bro!
both Debussy and ravel string quartets are great ,so much colour and like vaughn Williams have a deeper kind of prophetic vision of what’s coming in the 20th Century .brilliant
Actually yeah. I love the viola and it’s sound, it just has a bad rep because it’s usually lots of second rate violin players playing them and it’s not properly sized for projection so it’s strength is weaker. But it’s weak tone is often mitigated in large, decent ensembles. But as a soloist, it’s calm and withheld tones allows for the most intimate of sound.
On second hearing this is for me really the best performance ever heard of this marvellous quartet (never heard it live). Of course I realise the sound quality is very important for an evaluation and the quality here is very, very good.
It's surprising that this was written relatively early in his career; I would've guessed the 1900s-10s. It's also surprising that this only has 5,000 views!
In my own head I imagine each movement as a season: I. Summer, the main theme is full and lush with greens and blues, you can feel the energy and the heat in the chromaticism. II. Fall, I imagine the leaves turning color and falling ever so gently, playfully rustling in the wind III. Winter, i imagine walking through the snow, trees dead, trying to trek to the warmth of the cabin, you stop to make a fire, watch it blaze, continue on, and finally make it to the cabin IV. Spring, the trees have new leaves, flowers bud, showers drizzle and the main theme comes back in bursts, strong, playful, and reminiscent of birds chirping. The heat and energy is coming back around again.
Wow, this is so much better than the version I'm used to--It features a more principled pace, closer mic-ing, and a whole-bodied mix generous to the mids.
