Great comment 👍 The reality is he is a few years off beating me at most things - but at 21/22 will crush it........ I'm going to pin the comment for any tall kids watching who are pissed that they lag behind shorter mates....the problem that teenagers that are tall have (he only turned 18 a few weeks ago) is that they (unless they are genetic freaks) have spent 15/16/17/18 growing upwards. The amount of energy and muscle and bone that takes is exponentially huge. So when a short 15 year old is done at 5ft7 his body can focus on bulk and strength. A kid heading for 6ft6 + has years still to go. I know that at 17/18 I was no where near "adult" size in overall volume. I probably stopped filling out around 21/22. On top of that, long arms and legs are poor levers and so someone with a 6ft9 wingspan can have MORE muscle than someone short....but they will LOOK smaller and perform things like bench/chins etc much worse. There are no NATURAL really tall strong people (or hardly any!) at a competitive level. So - if you are tall and "skinny" despite weighing more than your mates......a) wait, you may have growing to do and b) focus on things that you can do that others cant - basketball, row, swim, paint ceilings. Because trying to get biceps that LOOK like your stubby little mates is hard going (even if your arm may actually be bigger!) It's all perception and how you look - hence the saying "look like a giraffe" is derogatory to tall kids but if you had to get kicked in the head by a giraffe or a donkey. You go donkey every time! 😂
Separating out the specific parts and tools for each of the seven step assembly process steps was brilliant on the part of the manufacturer. For the price, I am impressed at how sturdy this ruclips.net/user/postUgkxvObaTzoHoHQLL4lHbJQmExHqsrZQm-f7 unit is and it does go together easily. Well, I was puzzled at first at Step 5 and maybe the instructions should mention that rail #62 needs to be tilted upwards a little to get the rail to fit into the main part #44. I like it that the rower can be stored vertically in a really small amount of space, but be forewarned that this rower is top heavy and for safety you'll need at least two bungee cords to keep the unit upright, attaching them to something; in my case to a third garage door. I have had this unit only a short time, and I will post an update once I've had it for a year. As for working your legs, I have to admit that I'm mainly rowing for upper body strength and I use other forms of exercise for leg strength (like walking fast, biking, or using a trampoline. But if you pull as far forward as possible, then you can give preference to your legs for the first 4 feet or so of travel. I also admit to not taking the two electronic connectors apart at Step 7. I simply inserted the two batteries while the other parts remained connected. By the way, there is plenty of resistance here, even in the lowest resistance settings. Kudos to Sunny Health & Fitness !

I’m 17, so am frequently exposed to the usual social media “ideals” of what you ‘should’ look like and how you ‘should’ train. Watching you is not only inspiring but incredibly entertaining! Thanks again for your honesty and I look forward to following you on your Hyrox journey and beyond 👍🏼
@@MarkLewisfitness haha I've been watching a since you were trying to figure out what bike to buy last year, 17 at the time. Your reviews of Garmin products were really good, and your zwift performances were also good fun to watch. Keep doing what your doing👍
1:24 is solid for a non-rower, even a strong guy. I rowed in college and could probably only do 1:26 now at 195 lbs. Generally more length is good, but for 500m you want to shorten and increase your stroke rate - this was the main problem for your son I think. Excited to see your 2k result. Anything under 6:40 will be a triumph!
Ad a former elite level rower sure the technique can be improved but more importantly both you and your son could absolutely, definitely have big success in rowing. Outstanding!
I started watching Mark to get a few hints and tip, but I end up with tears running down my face and my stomach hurting. At least its gets a workout. Great vids 🙂
It’s actually an interesting point because lots of events won’t count the time that you do with your dog because bigger dogs will happily pull their owners to a faster pace than they could normally manage. For example, the dog human 5K record is actually faster than the world 5K! However, Nixon is too light and I am too heavy for that to work. My loan 5KPV is faster than my PB with him. He probably adds a good 25/30/ seconds to a 5K run because the benefit of him pulling me, which he only does at the very start, is very very slight and the disadvantage of having to worry about where he is, not tripping over him, et cetera is bigger. However, that is not to say he is slow - because he could probably run faster without me! It will be interesting to get him to run with a much faster runner because I expect he could probably do a 17 minute park run without me. Basically, we are slower together than apart!
Ladies and Gentlemen - this here is a Master Class on how to roast your son, harsh but graceful landing. Came here for the cycling, staying for the dad tips and roasting!
Great video! Getting a Concept2 rower - with a more modern monitor - like the PM5 - allows you to connect your phone to the monitor and record verified scores - that's how you get those numbers on the website. You can also do it manually without connection! I think you could quite easily become British Champion - and beyond at World Level. Love to see you at the British Indoor Rowing Champs later in 2022 (normally in Dec - and then Worlds) - Johnny Luk, World Rowing.
Great content, had me laughing most of the way though. Used to take my two kids cycling down the Thames Jubilee River route, near to Mark's Dorney lake Tri-athlon, off from Maidenhead to Windsor every Saturday morning. Eventually after 2-3 years, daughter number 1 at 16-17 years old, did beat me on a section we used to sprint on. She subsequently gave it up, I continued, and at age 61 those kids wouldn't get close to me today! @Mark keep the content coming and the exercise going, and if you fancy a challenge on your bike down the Jubilee River route against a wrinkly but pretty fast 61 year old I'm here! 😂
Blimey two great times. I've just got my cocncept 2 rower. Never used one before and my best time is 2 minutes and 4 seconds. I was bloody knackered. I'm 65 BTW.
Love your spirit Mark. I'm off to do a Park Run with my boy tomorrow. A little family competition is healthy, just as long as he doesn't beat me. Great video, love the one liners. Keep it up young man.
FWIW, as an average guy and a non-rower, my best ever 500m was 1:33 when I was 37. But I'm a 5'7" short-arse, so that wasn't completely terrible. I went sub-7 for a 2k once. Once. 🤣
Good effort ! Unlike park runs and the like, I don't think you'll ever find "normal people" scores for the ergo as most of the entries on the Concept 2 website will be from events, or uploads from an App such as Ergdata which requires a certain commitment to rowing or data collection ! 1:24 for 500m on an ergo is 590W average - be interesting to compare that with what you could do on a bike
Great to see lad v dad as a new subscriber I am catching up on the RUclips videos from your site, done various tests with my lad especially through lockdown when he was furloughed I had the bragging rights in the beginning but he was quickly catching up I found that the mental part of longer exercises in my favour old school old dad😀😀 mind you was glad to see him get back to work before he whipped my arse.
Another cracking video Mark. I have an old Concept 2 sitting in the home gym unused for quite a few years - maybe it’s time to get back on over winter as a change from swim, bike, run, weights. As others have said you have to have another go over 2000m sometime. Having done many sports over many, many years this is still one of the hardest physical and mental races I know of. A truly brutal 6 or 7 minutes.
I can only assume Nixon is in the boot, because otherwise, he'd be in your lap helping you drive. That's what t.Rex, my grandson's dog(Jack Russell mix), does. Truly a small alpha dog.
The numbers on the C2 logbook aren't necessarily a race or event, users can just upload them. I've never done anything official and yet my paltry times are up there. I upload my logbook once in a while as it keeps track of the season scores and distance etc. Basically from that side you are just uploading the activity log to the cloud. What you can do then is take a look at your rows, and select a fast one, and get C2 to rank it. Then it appears in the listings. So the rows there are all the ones people opted to have ranked. So they aren't the creme de la creme of rowers, but they are the best efforts of people who opted to put their number forward.
I was sure that I saw your boy in my gym today (absolute fitness). I nearly said “you’re Mark Lewis’s son” all enthusiastically, but did want to embarrass him lol :-)
Great content Mark, couldn’t think of better training for the ironman later in the year, the interesting data will be how tiredness effects you on the day. Are you listening to Imtalk, really useful podcast from a couple of Kiwis.
The second I saw the title this afternoon I thought "This will be good! And it was! Good to see you working out together Mark, I thought you'd beat him with a little more margin but a win is a win. What setting does the rower need to be? I might give it a go myself. Great vid, thanks! 👍
It doesn’t matter what setting you choose, select whatever is most comfortable. Essentially you just row faster or harder. Rowers tend to use around 4 to replicate the drag on the water closest. (You can get specific drag settings displayed on the monitor if you want .)
I was inspired by your earlier videos to chase Concept2s challenge this month. 200km in a month. If I manage to accumulate that I get a physical BADGE. Amazing how much of a motivation that is. Also if you push the hands out a little faster on the recovery it would be hard to tell you apart from most half decent rowers. (hard not to coach when it's all you do)
Great channel Mark. Some familiar stomping grounds too! TVP, Dorney etc. Anyone can upload to the C2 logbook and rank a time. Most I would say are your average Joe not your megafit rower esp. as you go up the age categories. Would love to see you try some long distance stuff on the rower to complement your ultra training. If son gets close on the short stuff, you will definitely destroy him on the long distances 😀
@@MarkLewisfitness LOL, I was thinking 60m, HM and up, maybe after Jan 😁 You prob know but you can connect the c2 to Zwift and row as a bike! Zwift keep promising rowing proper and then not doing it. I have rowed up Ven top and Alpe du Zwift.. although won't be rushing to do it again! 😅
@@MarkLewisfitness should be able to! have a look at RowedBiker and Painsled apps. These act as the bridge between c2 rower and zwift. That definitely sounds like a challenge and a half!
Concept 2 have an online log book. By registering and creating your own log book, access is available to the world rankings for various times and distances. Ranking categories are available for gender, weight, age and country. It’s a very good system and worth a serious look, especially if you include rowing in your training schedule. Ranking are also available for the SkiErg and BikErg.
Hi Mark, I used to be a high level rower (came second in the British indoors one year) PB is 1:20.4 at 6’3”. Your time considering your experience and age is amazing, your son’s on the other hand would be considered feeble, typical 6 foot gym bro time. I am doing Hydrox in Manchester and personally intend to treat the row as a rest and do a 3:30 or so since going much faster than that starts to require big jumps in power that are better spent on the running. I’ll give you a shout if I see you 😁
@@MarkLewisfitness True! But given that 500m, holding a 1:45 for 3.5mins will probably see you start to recover rather than get in more oxygen debt - provided your technique is good, you have the height and reach to do it, might be worth practicing. Rowers normally row with the machine at level 5 (drag factor 130/135), not only is this most like on water rowing resistance, but this gives the flywheel the best acceleration/top speed compromise. I recommend you try setting the machine to 5/6 and concentrate on maximising your height with a long and strong stroke rate and focus on your breathing - this is what I plan to do anyway!
@@hotshot8365 ok - couple of things! I had a play at 1k after a leg workout - so not fresh, but not wasted either. Took it steady (could have jumped off and started running) and did 3.16. So - looking at the hyrox results.....either, the other activities leave you gasping at the row and it slows even the fastest down......or no rowers do hyrox 🤣. Given even Hunter (who has the fastest ever Hyrox row) isn't close to 3.16 - I may take it super easy and crush the row to just be the fastest ever rower (and then come last overall 🤣 )
@@MarkLewisfitness hahaha, but coming last overall won’t make you above average 😉 I had a play today to see where I stood, 1km run in 4 min followed by a 1km row in 3:30 twice over followed by a third 1km run in 4 min and a 1km ski erg in 4:10. I’ll not lie, think my running will start to degrade after that. My gym has a sled and the balls, need to start playing with these soon otherwise I’ll be a total novice!
Love that you keep the challenge on with you boys….mine (well one at least) can now pass me on most things physical and it’s fine…because he earned it (never given something as his mother told me I should let him win sometimes) nope, not going to happen!
it's a standard elastic lead for jogging - the harness is a lightweight canni cross harness for running - much lighter than regular harnesses. I have an old video on dog running tips/gear
Care not to pull on those straps as much if you row longer distance. I picked up a groin injury from pulling on straps during a 10k row, I had no idea until it was too late!
14:30 tbh it varies massively, on the ergs (as opposed to water) you will often find mass moves mass, so even people that don’t row much can bang out massive scores on short sprints like that. Typically people are fastest between 30-40 and generally the heavier they are the faster they erg, but I would definitely say your scores were faster than your average joe
I worked in a gym approx 7 years ago and ran a 500m rowing competition over a 6 month period, approx 80 males entered, only 4 got under 1min 30, i won with a 1.21.9 which was approx 5 seconds better than 2nd place, almost everyone nearly died of exhaustion after/during it, i wasnt too wrecked but was definitely shook....the winning female got 1min48, she was a full time horse trainer and slightly overweight..i was 6ft3.5 and 112kg when i did it.
Ok... so, you did the park run with a stride length of say 1 meter per stride in 19 mins. BUT... NIXON with a stride length of less than .1 meter per stride did it in the same time? Nixon says, "PFFT." {...in the background of your video} :)
Hey @marklewis what's your fastest 5k 🤣 - never heard anyone mention their PB so much - only joking, it's impressive and you are right to be proud of it. Love your videos mate.
14:34 well last year I went for a competitive row at an old school. I hadn't rowed for about 20 years but I was a decent amateur cyclist. I was also 52 yo. with 1 slip off the seat, I clocked a 1:41. A few months later I did another row in 1:35.
My kid tried to beat me at arm wrestling for years until the day he did. He had to work out in the gym for quite some time to do it and my reaction was that my plan succeeded in that I wanted him to get fit and be healthy.
Alright I finnally subscribed @mark Lewis - I’m Gonna add you on strava… I’m a elite Racer… in AUS … your gonna find a lot Of slow activity … lol 😂 an see a lot Of race data… slow goes to necessarily mean you’ll run slower.. zone 2 benchmark the wizard zone I call it.. RGT builds your aerobic.. engine can help the anaerobic zone.. 5-6+ why ever I only train by 5 zones… but anyway.. once a fortnight 5 hours of gym. … you’ll be surprised what slow adaption can do for your faster twitching fibres… you should only do. 2 solid rides or runs a week.. with efforts focused on the twitch of power…
When I was a scrawny 15 year old. I squared up to my dad who was 6 foot and strong as an ox but had annoyed me about something. He laughed and said ' boy.. you will never be big enough and strong enough' I'm now 57 and he is a wobbly with a walking stick 80 year old with one replaced knee and the other knee pretty much knackered. Would it be wrong for me to now (after all these years) push him over :-)

It doesn’t matter what setting you choose, select whatever is most comfortable. Essentially you just row faster or harder. Rowers tend to use around 4 to replicate the drag on the water closest. (You can get specific drag settings displayed on the monitor if you want .)
I use 7/8 which is higher than many but just feels good to me.
(hard not to coach when it's all you do)
I'll take half decent 😁
Love Nixon!
2k coming after Xmas!
@@vfr0391 hmmmmm. Wonder if I can link the gym rower to Zwift somehow???? Might be cool to row and run the Alpe same day!
@@MarkLewisfitness should be able to! have a look at RowedBiker and Painsled apps. These act as the bridge between c2 rower and zwift. That definitely sounds like a challenge and a half!
I think my best time is 1:32. I need to start doing weekly sprints. Mainly I do 1K rows on my C2 at home.
You can tell your son's had some coaching from his technique and yet you still beat him!
Great vid: )
You're also a tailor. You are the "Renaissance Man".
Wow that kid has serious potential!
I’ll give you a shout if I see you 😁
Going to do a 1k row this week and see how fast that is 😁 3.30 sounds quicker than most do it!
Hi Mark, training for Hyrox Amsterdam next year. Thanks for your info.
2:08 HI NIXON!!!!!
Mark if your rowing, keep your arms straight on the recovery it will help lots
Competitive dad!
Very good scores guys!
Love that you keep the challenge on with you boys….mine (well one at least) can now pass me on most things physical and it’s fine…because he earned it (never given something as his mother told me I should let him win sometimes) nope, not going to happen!
Does Nixon have an FTP? Great video Mark....reminds me of me & my younger (although taller & stronger) brother!!
3000 ftp in dog years 😂🐶
Hi what dog leash and harness are you using. I have similar sized dog but leash I just bought is bit too heavy for small dog. PS loving the content
it's a standard elastic lead for jogging - the harness is a lightweight canni cross harness for running - much lighter than regular harnesses. I have an old video on dog running tips/gear
The nice thing about Josh being your size is he can wear your pink socks.
Care not to pull on those straps as much if you row longer distance. I picked up a groin injury from pulling on straps during a 10k row, I had no idea until it was too late!
Interesting you mention that because, during a workout today, I did feel stiffness there and wondered what that would be. Good to know. 👍🏼
Ok, I am at 1:45. It is REALLY tough, especially after 1 hour of zwift. I will continue to try to lower that time. Row on.
I assume that 112KG was a fit one, mainly muscles. I run around 115KG at 6ft2 when fully fit.
@@RogueCylon at 112kg id have been perfectly suited to the 500m row and 100m sprints but i wouldnt have been conditioned for a long run at all....
I will die before any of my kids beat me😂😂😂
Ok... so, you did the park run with a stride length of say 1 meter per stride in 19 mins. BUT... NIXON with a stride length of less than .1 meter per stride did it in the same time? Nixon says, "PFFT." {...in the background of your video} :)
He has four legs 😝
@@MarkLewisfitness Ah... yes, ...baffle them with Math .... good save. {nods head approvingly with a subtle thumbs up}.
Can you do a 2k test on the C2? You would also be able to more easily compare your score with the general public.
Early jan!
@@MarkLewisfitness epic, I row at Leander by the way so it was cool to hear it come up in one of your videos
2nd vid, 2nd like. Liked the take down of modern 'fitness' in the other one.
if you want to know averge times you can look them up in the machine menu. there should be a category named re row. when i looked the average was 1:40
Hey @marklewis what's your fastest 5k 🤣 - never heard anyone mention their PB so much - only joking, it's impressive and you are right to be proud of it.
Good one - it would only be fair though to have a rematch…….with you rowing first so your son has the target.
Alright I finnally subscribed @mark Lewis - I’m
Gonna add you on strava… I’m a elite
Racer… in AUS … your gonna find a lot
Of slow activity … lol 😂 an see a lot
Of race data… slow goes to necessarily mean you’ll run slower.. zone 2 benchmark the wizard zone I call it..
Don’t mind ✌️😑 the horrible
Dialectic writing. iPhone decides how to make me stupid each week.
Standard 2k would be a good test of the cv! :)
Mark, do you feel like your zwift race experience in race tactics has effected the way you run a race?
Absolutely…..I now sit behind people and take them with 300m to go. 😂 I run like I’m in Zwift!
I'm hoping to find someone who looks at me like the rower looks at Mark, he can't just wondering where to get a T-Shirt like that.
