Hi there! I was the one making the request. Thank you D for being so fast in watching this masterpiece ❤
Versailles is a Japanese band created in June 2007 with members KAMIJO (vocals), HIZAKI (guitar/mostly in red), TERU (guitar/mostly in blue), Jasmine You (bass) and YUKI (drums).
So, just for everything to be clear: both HIZAKI and Jasmine are MEN dressed on stage as women and it has nothing to do with sexual preferences (see below).
I know it’s complicated, so I will explain the story as well as I can:
Versailles is attached to a specific genre of music called Visual kei. It appeared in the 80’s, and it considers looks as important as music, which leads to impressive performances on stage with beautiful costumes, make-up and hairstyle. It also takes inspiration from Kabuki, the traditional Japanese theatre where all female parts are played by men. So that’s why some Vk members chose this look.
Versailles choose the baroque/classical/rococo style from the French 17th/18th centuries, mainly because KAMIJO is a fan of the manga called « The Rose of Versailles ».
As they were in the middle of recording their new debut album in 2009 (they’d just gone major with Warner music Japan), Jasmine suddenly got sick. However, nobody in the band suspected how bad it was and rumours said he hid the real nature of his sickness to protect his friends. Jasmine was a cheerful, funny character with a caring nature in the band, so he left a deep void when he passed. HIZAKI was the closest to him, as the first had notably introduced the latter to the band (they had already shared the stage together before). So of course HIZAKI felt the urge in his sadness to compose a song for his friend, and it gave this result on the Holy Grail album released in 2011.
As you said, D, everybody needs to listen to this song for its extreme beauty. To me, it expresses everything anyone has to face to in life someday. Love, loss, courage, resilience and hope. Healing? Maybe not in this case. But hope is our best hope, if I may say it like that (and if you want to know the whole explanation of the song, or at least my own interpretation, please check my video, it’s the one D just watched).
As for the replacement. MASASHI is the one « replacing » Jasmine, though the latter is really considered the eternal member of the band.
Last detail: there is the violet butterfly when it’s silent because Jasmine was always dressed in that colour! 💜

Jasmine Yu was their first bassisrt... he didn't just die he died just after they got their record contract and were in the middle of recording their first album... in fact the song Serenade was the song they were in the middle of recording and Hizaki, the guy in the red dress, played the bass for the rest of the recording.

Jasmine Yu was a guy, this is called Visual Kei, and their Visual concept was that they are Baroque Era Vampires who wear French Rococo inspired outfits...
Other Visual Kei Bands include Band Maid, Aldious, Lovebites, Hagane. And the founder of Visual Kei X Japan.

Look uo images of Hizaki, there's one with no makeup... definitely a guy, and he has a deeper voice than The Sobger Kamijo.
The guitarist Teru looks like he is right out of Final Fantasy..
